Upperline Restaurant | #TCEatsNOLA

Moving back uptown for another phenomenal feast among my 18 New Orleans Eats, I’m sitting down for a most sublime supper at the accommodating and gentile Upperline Restaurant, where the very definition of Southern hospitality may be enjoyed to its fullest and most delectable extent.

JoAnn Clevenger’s Upperline Restaurant is one of the most delightful places to dine in New Orleans – for the authentic haute Creole cuisine, for the museum worthy display of local New Orleans art, and for the warm welcome by Ms Clevenger and staff. If you want to feel at home in an elegant setting and to have “that little place we went to one night” to remember for the rest of your life, go to Upperline.

And when you go by all means order the fried green tomatoes with shrimp remoulade – it’s a dish originated at Upperline in the early 90s that’s now become a mainstay on many a New Orleans menu.

But that’s just one of Upperline’s own culinary creations to wow local palates and attract the accolades of gourmet travellers from across the globe. Drum served either as Sautéed Gulf Fish Meunière or Drum Fish Piquant with Hot & Hot Shrimp (an homage to the Hot & Hot Fish Club in Birmingham, Alabama) is sure bet for savoury satisfaction. Stuck choosing between the two, I was offered the option of a half and half plate of both. Perfection … as was the 1858 Original Sazerac that kicked off my meal … and the honey-pecan bread pudding with toffee sauce that wound it down, with every sip and sup of everything else in between a revelation of good taste.

Visiting New Orleans from out of town? Get JoAnn to share her wealth of recommendations with you. This kind lady is a living encyclopedia of NOLA knowledge proud to share experience with a keen listener. Love art? Do not leave without enquiring about the collection on the walls, especially giant painting by Noel Rockmore near the entrance.

Giving this write up a proofread, I see I’ve used the word “most” a lot. I meant it every instance. Upperline is a most wonderful establishment that should be top choice for any smart New Orleans dining agenda.

Reservations are recommended. Dress code is “Dressy upscale casual.”
