Trawler Trash

Trawler Trash is a new Highbury restaurant that wants to bring the “trash” from the trawler to its patrons’ plates with a menu focused on lesser known fish and seafood.

Fishy business? For sure! And that’s what I liked most about it.

Kemey and I had a great Friday night fish feast at Trawler Trash. Highlights of our meal were my starter, air-dried charred octopus with green tomatoes and chilli (£8.90), and her main, cider mussels with apple, parsley, clotted cream and chunky skins-on chips (£12.90). My main was tasty too – an off menu special (priced around £15) of plaice cooked with Champagne and salmon roe butter topped with samphire and peas. The fish firm yet flaky but maybe was a tad too drenched in the butter (as yummy as the butter was). An order of extra flavoursome crushed peas (£3.50) was a side dish we both enjoyed.

A bottle of Mountadam Riesling, Eden Valley, 2013 (£43) went down a resplendent and creamy treat and paired well with the mains. Desserts – buttermilk panna cotta with poached rhubarb and “trash chocolate bar with sweet scraps” and strawberry ice cream (£5.90 each) were pleasant. Service was swift and friendly. The dining room was attractive with a similarly sleek but casual vibe to its sister outlets Firedog and The Black Penny (all three are part of the Fork and Blade restaurant group).

Going back over my memory of the menu, I’m 99% certain every starter and main was pescatarian. I think that’s really cool. I’d be glad to dine there again.

Trawler Trash is located at 205 Upper Street, N1 1RQ. Find out more at trawler-trash.com.
