Vintage and Farmhouse Ales from Central Italy’s Birra del Borgo and Goose Island of Chicago were showcased and paired with dishes designed by TV chef and cookbook author Valentine Warner and Chef Martin Carabott of restaurant Luca at a recent one-off dinner hosted at Carousel in Marylebone.
I was happy to pull up a chair at the table for the occasion and very much enjoyed the beer and the pairings.
Beers served included Goose Island Sofie (which just last month I’d professed my liking of); Birra del Borgo Cortigiana (a Saison that went down a wonder paired with truffle pasta with hazelnut and lemon butter); a sour and peachy Goose Island Halia; and a potent (10.5 ABV) and complex Birra del Borgo L’Equilibrista (mixed with wine and fermented in bottle Champagne style).
The range of brews was impressive – from the light and almost ephermal Sofie to the umph-y and ponderous L’Equilibrista – and hopefully suggested a move to more crafty endeavors in the world of craft beer and a move from ever more hopped up APA sudsy drink.
