Best thing about our recent tour of Scotland? Humming through the Highlands in the comfortable and stylish Vauxhall Mokka X.
In particular, the epically scenic A82 road from Glasgow to Inverness (via Loch Lomond and Fort William, through Glen Coe and along the length of Loch Ness) was a dream of a drive.
On loan to us for our journey, the fairly compact 4X4 SUV proved a most capable companion. Agile and adaptive on city streets, country lanes and even a (very wee) bit of off-roading, the Mokka X handled Scotland’s famously temperamental climate – not to mention the luscious curves of the A82 – with ease.
Running 167 miles from Glasgow to Inverness, the A82 trunk road is the second longest A-road in Scotland (the other being the A9). With sights such as Glen Coe, Ben Nevis and Urquhart Castle, it winds through some of Britain’s most stunning landscapes and is considered to be one of the most beautiful driving routes in Britain. There’s plenty of places to park for taking in the views along the way as well as well as long stretches to settle into and commune with the ribbon of highway itself.
During our autumn ride, conditions were near ideal and traffic wasn’t an issue at all. But it should be noted that the A82 is a major commercial route, that roadworks and diversions are perhaps uncommon but not rare, and that at the height of tourist season the road can get clogged with holiday drivers, RVs and the like.
Once we reached our destination of Inverness, the Mokka X remained extremely handy for excursions around Loch Ness, the Moray Firth, and the Cairngorms National Park.
The vast majority of the time (not just on the A82 but our entire itinerary including the long drive back home to London), Kemey drove. At first I thought I was shirking off too much driver duty to her only but eventually realised she had claimed the steering wheel purposely and was having a blast controlling our cruise across the countryside.
With Onstar (including in-car WiFi hotspot), individual seat heating, four-wheel drive, adaptive forward lighting, ample cargo space and loads more features and options for comfort and safety, we loved how the Mokka X helped us make the most of our time in such a gorgeous corner of the world.
