Berlin | Best of the Wurst

Best of the wurst? It’s gotta be in Berlin! So let me share with you the tastiest recs for that most quintessential of Berliner street food: currywurst.

I feel like I’ve been neglecting my blog over these past few months. I’ve been focused so much on side projects, writing for other outlets and travelling that I haven’t been able to take the time to publish as many posts as I would have liked. But I have been taking notes. And now that my schedule has settled down and I’ve settled in for a long stretch at home, I’m eager to get back to daily blogging and sharing some my favourite misadventures and happy happenstances with you.

Among the notes from my recent travels are those about cheapskate dining across Germany in April. I spent pretty much the entire month working in Germany on a gig that had me hitting the streets in six different cities. Budget and time were tight, and I was on my feet covering lots of ground each day. But German cities are sensibly designed, transportation between them is straightforward, and options for food are decent and inexpensive. Plus, I got super lucky with the weather. Every day was sunny with daytime temps hovering between 20° and 25° Celsius (68° and 77° Fahrenheit). So the gig was a load of fun without any hassle – and that goes double for my string of days in Berlin.

As for cheapo nosh in the German capital, I found the city’s most famous food – currywurst – to be perfect for saving money while filling up on something yummy, checking out a variety of neighbourhoods and generally getting a better sense of a city I already knew and loved quite well.

But not all currywursts are alike. I went to four classic Berlin eateries that all serve this sausage with spicy ketchup dish as their main menu item. The currywurst was always delicious and affordable. Each place was characterful and unique, and I reckon deserving of a write up.

So, keep an eye out for future posts about the Best of the Wurst in Berlin. Over the course of the series, I’ll share recommendations for where to eat the most authentic currywurst, a bit of history about this famed fast food, and maybe some other clued in but un-curried ideas about how to eat cheap in Berlin. Until then, auf Wiedersehen und danke.
