Favourite Dishes from 8 World Cup Countries

With the World Cup in now in full swing, writer Alice Lloyd thought it would be a good idea to show you each nation’s favourite dish.

There are 32 teams in Russia this year, each battling it out for the most coveted prize in football. Each country has its own famous food you must try. You could even turn this into a game of your own by having each one before the end of the tournament. For the purpose of this post, we will focus on Group A and Group B, meaning we will dive into eight of best meals around for each country.

Russia

Let’s start with the home nation.  If you want something to start with that is popular in the heart of Moscow, a Russian borsch is the food for you.

Perfect for those cold winter days that we are all too familiar with.

Uruguay

Choripán is the nation’s favourite fast food. This is a South American grilled chorizo served in a crusty bread roll and flavoured with chimichurri sauce.  Lovely.

Saudi Arabia

A very common Saudi dish, Mandi is something that you can’t avoid missing out on. It’s made from a mixture of meat, rice and spices and cooked in a special oven, known as a tandoor.  Worthy of a special event.

Egypt

Another fast food favourite but full of flavour nonetheless. Ful wa Ta’meya is a staple of the Egyptian diet.  It translates directly to fava beans and falafel which makes it perfect for vegetarians.

Spain

A well known dish, Spanish paella is a favourite of cultura Española. A rice dish full of flavours, you can find it loaded with a variety of meats and vegetables.  Excellent as a share platter.

Portugal

A traditional Christmas dish that melts in the mouth, the Bacalhau is a codfish meal that has been in Portuguese culture for the last 40 years. Nicknamed ‘the faithful friend’, bacalhau is revered throughout the nation.  No higher praise than that.

Iran

Fesenjan is an iconic Iranian stew that dates back to 515 BC. The fact it has been around for so long is a testament to its brilliance and has remained popular to this date.

Morocco

Chicken Bastilla is Morocco’s famous take on a savory pie. Traditionally, it was made with pigeons as the primary meat with an array of herbs and spices.  A truly beautiful meal.

And that only covers the first two groups! A wide array of amazing and exotic choices to try before the tournament ends. Drop a line if you want to find the best things to try from countries in the remaining groups.
