Curry at the Wall | Berlin | Best of the Wurst

Vegan dining in Berlin? It could be wurst as I found out during one of my meals when I last visited the German capital.

Being on the road for a month with a tight budget and tighter itinerary made it hard to eat as healthily as I would have liked or otherwise done. And given how craven I can be about food, it was doubly difficult being in carno-rific Germany for all that time. But I tried to do my best getting enough veggies and fiber while limiting the most excessive of treats to rare occasions.

Honestly, very nutritious and non-meat options were available across the country and could be purchased with relative ease, particularly in Berlin and as long as I could look past the many awesome kebab shops, butcheries and such. I didn’t have to totally give up on my pursuit of Berlin’s best currywurst though!

A vegan dinner at Curry at the Wall turned out to be a suitable substitute to the rest of the street meat on offer in Berlin. €7.90 got me a vegan currywurst (made of seitan and wheat protein) with a portion of fries (ketchup and mayo included) and a soft drink. The meal was ample and tasty, with a rich spicy curry sauce and crisp fries. I added raw onions and curry powder for an added kick. Maybe the actual sausage wasn’t as succulently moreish as its pork counterparts, but it added up to a good meal for good value.

The “wall” in the eatery’s name is indeed The Wall that once divided Berlin and when felled in 1989 marked the unification of Germany. So this little kiosk caters to sightseers touring an area of the city that is very much worth checking out. It was close to my hotel (not to mention much of the work I was doing) as well as loads of attractions and historic landmarks such as Checkpoint Charlie.

I kept walking by seeing its “vegan currywurst” signage wondering if it would be any good. The giant bear holding an oversized sausage on top of the Curry at the Wall kiosk caught my attention as well. I should note that this friendly little snack bar with outdoor seating was hardly just a vegetarian vendor, with traditional meat sausages for sale as well.

Curry at the Wall is located at Zimmerstraße 97, 10117 Berlin. Find out more at curry-at-the-wall-berlin-mitte.com.
