Dreaming Big About Winning Big

P1070020

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to suddenly have access to a load of cash – like inheriting a fortune from a long lost relative or winning a lottery bet?

Indulge my (and your own) imagination as I dream about what I think I would do if a financial windfall unexpectedly came my way.

Back to Zero

Let’s deal with the boring stuff first. I’d pay off all my debt. I don’t have a whole lot of debt (unless you count the mortgage on my house), but it still looms over more decisions than I’d like and interferes with my fun and keeps me from being able to make decisions based on what I really want to do. So zap! No more credit card bills. No more mortgage. No more worry.

Ready Steady

Then I’d go. Go! Go! Go!

Where you ask? Wherever I say. I love the idea being able to head out wherever my whims would take me and then seeing where I might end up next without being bogged down by a tight itinerary or budgetary constraints. If I were in that situation right now, at this moment, I’d probably book it to Hawaii and New Zealand, two of the most beautiful places I’ve ever been but years ago in both cases.

Everyday I realise how fortunate I am to make a living as a travel writer, but the less glamorous side of this line of work is all the extensive planning and careful consideration that can go into a trip. Hitting the road minus an agenda and pesky deadlines would be a total treat.

When the Dust Settles

Before too long, I’d probably want to mosey back home. I’m certain I’d remain in London (or at least have a pied-à-terre here). However, I’m not sure if I’d choose to fix up my house (new bathrooms, bigger kitchen, converted loft) or relocate to a tonier part of town. Of course, such a dilemma would be a wonderful problem to have to solve – as would be deciding where my second, third and fourth homes would be!

After that? Not sure. I like writing and podcasting. So I reckon I’d carry on in some capacity. I hope I’d give to charities and worthy causes, invest well for my and my loved ones’ futures and pass on a legacy of wealth to deserving folks.

What about You?

How about you? Where would your windfall take you?
