The Lebanese Bakery, Covent Garden

P1190401

The Lebanese Bakery is the Covent Garden offshoot of a super popular Beirut-based bakery of the same name.

Just over half-a-year old the London branch (and only other outlet) of  The Lebanese Bakery does a steady trade offering a menu of manousheh (flatbreads) and mouajjanet (“bite sized bakes”) to a mix of customers in its tidy Russell Street eatery with open kitchen and giant oven in full view.

I enjoyed a solid early lunch at The Lebanese Bakery while out running Christmas errands and “one last meeting before the year ends” catch ups. The place was ideal for just such a meal (though as gracious as it was service should have been a little faster).

I loved the all day breakfast option of baked eggs and awara (free range eggs and lamb confit baked on manousheh, £6.75). More so, I have longed since my lunch to return for another go at the akkawi (manousheh with soft cow milk cheese in its centre, £5.95). Akkawi may sound rather prosaic, but fans of grilled cheese and oozy textures: this is so very much what you want to eat and eating it will be the sort of moment you live for (and will crave to do again).

A couple of mouajjanet (halloumi with fresh basil; halva and pistachios; £1.50 each) and a glass of pomegranate juice (£3.95), and a few bites of a Nutella and hazelnut sweet manousheh (£5.25) rounded out my ‘best of’ sampling at TLB.

I’m inclined to go back (especially for another akkawi) and am happy to recommend it to folks floating around Covent Garden looking for low key eats.

The Lebanese Bakery is located at Drury House, Russell Street, WC2B 5HA. Original sister site is in Beirut. Find out more at thelebanesebakery.com.
