Camden Town Roadkill

Camden Town Roadkill

If you seek beefy flavour and no faffing about, Camden Town Roadkill serves the sort of food that’ll stop you dead in your tracks.

Earlier this week, I pulled over to The North Yard of The Stables Market for a burger (plus steak and sides ) from this newly launched food stall. I was impressed – not only with the quality food but with the concept as well.

Roadkill operates as a two-in-one butchery and grill. All meat is sourced direct from one Yorkshire farm and all ingredients are British. Owners Matthew Gregson-Jones and partner Jamie Patel aim to keep Roadkill as as ethical and environmentally friendly as possible with a commitment not to have single-use plastic and to minimise food wastage. Bones are roasted for their homemade sauces; beef drippings go on their fries for luscious results. They also want to keep things simple.

The menu is as meaty as it is minimalist with only four mains, a few extras and a couple of sides. Mains are as follows:

  •

Bacon Cheeseburger (aged Dexter with Mayfield cheese and treacle cured bacon, homemade pickled onion and BBQ sauce, served with beef dripping fries, £12.50);
  • Steak (35-day dry aged sirloin, fillet, or ribeye, served with beef dripping fried, £12.50 – cuts subject to availability);
  • Steak baguette (35-day aged rosemary marinated steak with watercress and roasted caramelised onions, English mustard on a baguette, served with beef dripping fries, £10); and
  • Steak salad (35-day dry aged steak on a salad of handpicked seasonal British greens).

The bacon cheeseburger and the sirloin were both excellent with loads more flavour than one might expect at that price point. Indeed, that burger set the bar high for any consumed after it this year. The Dexter beef was robust. Mayfield oozed in a beautiful way. Treacle cured bacon was a definite treat. The bun was buttery good and toasted firm.

For my gorgeous side of beef dripping fries, I upped the game and had them served “loaded” with five-hour slow roasted beef coated in BBQ sauce (£7 for an order) and cheese (add £2). Man oh man!

An order of crunchy slaw (£2) made with a mix of cabbage and greens (including Brussel sprouts) was ideal roughage.

For the rest of this month, the menu is being offered at reduced prices: the cheeseburger is only £7 and a steak is just a tenner.

According to Matthew and Jamie, the food stall is a mere starting off point for Roadkill with big plans ahead and potentially coming soon. Watch this space!
