Purveyors of premium street fries, Poptata has been frying hand-cut British potatoes in sunflower oil and smothering them in a range of toppings and homemade sauces since 2015 at festivals across the country and a small but growing number of permanent locations throughout London.
I popped round the Boxpark Shoreditch outlet recently and would not be averse to paying a repeat visit again soon.
During my Friday lunch visit, I tasted three items from the menu:
-
- Tex pulled pork fries with pulled pork, sour cream, smoky BBQ sauce, spring onions and Cheddar (£7.95);
- Guaca fries with smashed avocado, grilled halloumi and red roasted pepper sauce (£7.95); and
- Halloumi fries with pink garlic mayo (£6).
I liked all three a lot. But days later those salty fatty halloumi fries with crisp outside and yielding spongy inside with mildly tangy pink mayo and a dusting of herbs remain most prominent in my memory. I’d have ‘em again (and again).
Portion size of all three items was ample, and I thought prices were reasonable. Though the halloumi fries were considerably smaller (but also cheaper) than the regular potato fries. As for the actual potato fries, they were chunky and angular with some crunch on the outside and a fluffy interior.
Counter service was friendly. I didn’t have to wait long for my order. Poptata’s menu seemed smartly designed for customers sharing with friends at Boxpark’s communal seating area.
Poptata is located at Unit 55 Boxpark Shoreditch, 2-10 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6GY. There are other outlets at Boxpark Croydon, Portobello Market and Tooting Market as well. Find out more at poptata.com.
