I’m wising up to waste and helping get the word out about the North London Waste Authority’s Save a Crust campaign. It’s a fun and yummy way to reduce waste and be a better cook!
Continuing with my Save a Crust series, here’s a look at my attempt to bake a bread and butter pudding based on the lessons taught by Chef Mark Borrell during the NLWA’s free cookery workshop last week at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School near Archway Station.
Verdict? Bread and butter pudding is super easy to make – and is great for home cooks like me who enjoying winging it.
It’s also a smart idea for putting stale bread to good use and cleaning out the cupboards.
I tweaked my pudding to include all sorts of stuff cleared from the cupboard shelves (raisins, baking chocolate, chopped hazelnuts, mostly empty jar of honey instead of sugar, a pinch or two of cinnamon and nutmeg). The result were so scrumptious I went back for seconds … and thirds … and fourths even. Although my girlfriend said she wasn’t interested when I mentioned I was going to try making this classic British dessert, she couldn’t resist having a taste when the rich aroma of it baking wafted her way.
