Mighty Mayfair Breakfast Spot: The Guinea Grill

Young & Co’s Mayfair mainstay, The Guinea Grill, has started serving breakfast for the first time in its long history. For a meaty start to your day, having your most important meal at this Bruton Place pub and restaurant would be a fine idea.

I certainly was glad – and set for the day – when I recently paid the Guinea a visit for a late morning repast.

With a close dining buddy accompanying me, we dove into the menu with gusto and ordered the full mixed grill for two: two lamb cutlets, a 5oz beef fillet, devilled kidneys, ox heart, calf’s liver plus a fried egg each, grilled tomato, field mushrooms, smoked streaky bacon, black pudding, a few Lincolnshire sausages and unlimited toast (£54). We couldn’t finish it. But that’s not to say we didn’t come close or give it our damnedest. Highlights were the fillet and the ox heart. Although every bite was a pleasure unto itself.

Of course, there’s a range of other a.m. menu items but emphasis appeared very much to be on serving food prepared on the venue’s namesake grill.

Service during our two or three hour session was courtesy, swift and helpful (especially when it came to ‘twisting my arm’ into ordering a glass of Tuscan Syrah … it was after 11am anyway). The dining space was all I could have hoped for when playing hooky from life on a weekday: tucked away but convenient, somewhat formal (table clothes, fancy silverware) but casual, indulgent (if you want it) but presented with a lowkey demeanour. Coffee was good too!

The Guinea Grill is located at 30 Bruton Place W1J 6NL. Find out more at theguinea.co.uk.
