Kanada-Ya Adds Gyoza to the Menu

The tonkotsu ramen specialists at Kanada-Ya have added gyoza to the menu. Already a fan of all the other delectable morsels served at this Japan restaurant’s three London outlets, I was keen to have a taste of the most recent addition as soon as possible.

I’m pleased to report that I was not disappointed – and that the ramen is still as awesome as ever.

Kanada-Ya’s gyoza are hand filled with pan-fried pork, ginger and garlic before being grilled and served with a soy-yuzu dipping sauce. At £6 for a dish of five, they’re good value too. I’d order them again – and maybe some gorgeous karaage (fried chicken with mayo, £4) – making sure I save room for the ramen.

Of course, Kanada-Ya’s trademark tonkotsu broth remains the main draw. It’s rich in flavour with a full bodied velvety mouthfeel. A range of broths, ramens and other soups and rice dishes are available, but I tend to go for the tonkotsu classic (pork bone broth, chashu pork belly, wood ear fungus, seaweed, and spring onion, £10.90) served with my noodles “extra hard” (there’s an option of having your noodles cooked soft, hard or extra hard).

Kanada-Ya has three locations across London. I visited the outlet near Angel Station (35 Upper Street, N1 0PN) to try the gyoza.

Service was fast and courtesy during my visit. An ice cold Kirin beer went down well with my food.

There are outlets in Hong Kong and Japan, including the original restaurant in Fukuoka.
