Inertia  | 2023 Resolution

And more time lapses between these posts

But it’s not necessarily because of lack of initiative. My job is getting in the way a bit, and my work schedule is tighter and busier than it was at the start of the year. And even if you can’t see the written evidence here on the blog, that doesn’t mean I’m not doing ‘behind the scenes’ things to ensure I’ll have interesting stuff to write about in the future. I’m doing my best to remain committed but also being adaptive and flexible to the realities of life.

My goal is to blog regularly again, but I never really defined what ‘regularly’ meant. Back when I was blogging and writing for a living it was a full-time gig. Now, it’s in the margins of my job and other responsibilities. Regular doesn’t necessarily have to mean every single day or even once a week. So, I don’t think I’m slacking off on with regards to my resolution. In fact, I reckon I’m doing pretty well at pacing myself for the long haul so I can enjoy writing and maximise the results as much as possible.

That said, I think I would like to get back in the habit of publishing content at least once a week. However, here’s a newly recognised problem I need to address: inertia.

More than finding adequate time, inspiration or motivation to write, I’m having trouble stopping whatever I’m doing and getting started with writing. I know if I can just sort of ‘click over’ to writing mode that I’ll probably be able to churn out something I feel good about. But that ‘clicking over’ can be really tough to do.

Shifting from one task to another – like trying to change the course of a large ship mid journey – takes concentration and effort. When I’m in the middle of something, it’s easy to get lost in the moment and forget about writing (and everything else) altogether. However, I know that if I can just start writing, even if it’s just typing a few words on a screen, the momentum will build and the ideas will flow more easily.

I believe the key to overcoming inertia is to keep at it. Habits take time to form. I think I’m doing alright.
