Good Stuff and Great Taste at the Specialty & Fine Food Fair 2013

Here’s a quick list of just some of all the good stuff I came across this afternoon at the Speciality & Fine Food Fair 2013, the “UK’s largest showcase of fine food and drink”. The fair continues tomorrow and Tuesday at Olympia Exhibition Centre. I loved my nibbling meander through the fair and thought it presented a fabulous opportunity to sample a range of great products from Britain and abroad while chatting with passionate producers and entrepreneurs. London Daily Photo: Thomasina Miers, Burrito Mama

Thomasina Meirs (fresh back to work from several months’ maternity leave) and the folksbehind popular London restaurant group, Wahaca, have announced plans to open Burrito Mama – a new takeaway restaurant at One New Change (along with an actual Wahaca outlet in the same shopping complex) – at the end of October.

For a taste of what’s to come, head over to Street Feast in Dalston today where Tommi and crew will be slinging beans and stuffin’ ’em in toasted tortillas at a pop-up market stall (don’t worry – there’s covered seating if it rains). I dropped by last night for a pork pibil “Mexicana Mama” (sin rice but abundantly filled with pork and crunchy slaw). Yum. Continue reading

Theatre Review: A Door Must Be Kept Open – or Shut at The Osborne Studio Gallery

A first time collaboration sees The Osborne Studio Gallery on tony Motcomb Street in Knightsbridge host a new and intimate production of Alfred de Musset’s 168 year old play, A Door Must Be Kept Open – or Shut. Musset’s sharp witted lines delivered bluntly in this aristocratic battle of the sexes are a delight to take in and seem to ring as true today as when this punchy one act play was penned nearly two centuries ago. London Daily Photo: La Vie Est Belle with Pierre Hermé

I spent yesterday afternoon at the Residence de France at 11 Kensington Palace Gardens (the official home of the French Ambassador) previewing some seriously delectable macarons and more by pâtissier-confectioneur extraordinaire Pierre Hermé. Much of what I tasted is under strict embargo until later this year, but let me assure you that it’s all well worth the wait. So stayed tuned for more details. Until then, I can tell you that Hermé’s Fetish Ispahan range will be available from 22 October to 8 December. A blend of rose, lychee and raspberry, the “Ispahan” flavour comes in variety of forms such as macarons, granola, bonbon and confiture. Yum. Continue reading

Coming Soon: The Clockjack Chicken Burger

Sometime this week, Soho’s Clockjack Oven will launch the Clockjack Chicken Burger – a fried chicken thigh burger with a bit of a kick to it. Lucky clucker that I am, I had a chance to sample a prototype of the new burger last week. It was truly delicious and I reckon will prove to be a very popular addition to an already tasty menu. Fine Dining at Quantus in Chiswick, West London (OneTravel)

Another great restaurant to add to my growing list of London’s best is Quantus. Offering an exquisite menu of modern European cuisine with a strong Latin influence and a wine list that’s inspired and rather Latin tinged as well, this local west London fine dining establishment is a great option for foodies foraging around West London in search of excellence. Service at this lovely little Chiswick local is formal and prompt yet exceptionally friendly, and the prices are a huge relief. Continue reading

London Daily Photo: Lunch with Siba

Lunch today came compliments of South African chef Siba Mtongaga who was in town today to promote her new Food Network UK series, Siba’s Table. Look for the show to premiere on the Food Network UK 23 September and to be aired weekdays at 12.30pm and 6.30pm. Brought to you by the team who created Nigella’s Kitchen and Barefoot Contessa, Siba’s Table is filmed in Cape Town, where the chef creates and serves a range of dishes for her friends and family. I can vouch that much of her food is delish. She makes a mean chakalaka and was a gracious during my meal. Continue reading
