Vegetarian Delights at The Gate in Hammersmith

DSC_2353

A few weeks back, I attended the reopening of The Gate in Hammersmith after it had closed for a refit. It had been a few years since my last (and only other) visit to stalwart of the vegetarian dining scene, I was pleased to discover the same high standards and a still tasty menu.

Me, I’m a total carnivore. But I must admit sometimes the most interesting meals for me are the ones that don’t rely on meat. The Gate does veggie cuisine right, and no matter no dietary prefs or concerns there’s a strong chance you’ll leave the restaurant feeling satisfied and glad to have dining there (without feeling all bogged down or bloated).

To get an idea of the menu, consider this especially noteworthy main course I had during my recent visit: a spicy corn and polenta cake (seasoned with chilli, coriander and thyme, pan-fried and served with sweet potato, grilled aubergine, oven-dried tomato and spiced pickled fennel, finished with red pepper, black bean salsa and a coriander and lime dressing, £12.75).

Beyond sharing my recommendation to try The Gate for its wholesome and inventive food, I’d also like to take this opportunity to give a shout out the lovely server, Aurora, who was gracious and efficient and made an other perfectly enjoyable dining experience a sheer delight.

If you’re still looking round for a great place for a Christmas function, consider The Gate. Its festive season menu features yummy sounding treats such as wasabi potato cakes with a seaweed salsa; aubergine schnitzel with Applewood smoked cheddar; and chocolate and chestnut torte with caramelized kumquats.

The Gate is located at 51 Queen Caroline Street, W6 9QL. There’s a sister restaurant at St John St near Angel as well (I’m sure it’s swell too but can’t vouch for it). Find out more at thegaterestaurants.com.

Tasty Tales from the Italian Ham Highway: DOK Dall’ava Prosciuttificio in San Daniele di Friuli

DSC_2447

From the heights of the snowcapped Dolomites to the verdant Valle del Cibo, I recently had the delicious pleasure of visiting a number of the finest food and drink producers in northern Italy, taking in lots of pretty countryside along the way and getting to know some of the friendliest people I’ve ever met.

My afternoon of ham and beer tasting in Sauris was followed by a quick stopover about an hour down the road in the town of San Daniele di Friuli. I didn’t come across any beer during my short visit to San Daniele, but I did manage to sample some more extraordinary ham.

As in Sauris, prosciutto made in San Daniele is protected by the EU as a PDO product. With the Alps to the north whipping the area with cold mountain winds and the Adriatic sending warm sea air up from the south, San Daniele has a distinctive microclimate which results in singularly flavoursome cured meats.

Second only to Parma with respect to popularity and recognition (you decide for yourself which tastes better), San Daniele hams are pretty easy to come by in much of the world. If you’re interested in having a taste for yourself, I recommend keeping an eye out for the “simply luxury food” brand, DOK Dall’ava.

DSC_2465

DOK Dall’ava

In San Daniele, I took a tour of the roadside DOK Dall’ava prosciutto factory and museum. The facility is a smart and attractive place to see how (and where) prosciutto is made as well as to find out what sets San Daniele hams apart from the competition. They even have their own Prosciutto Learning Centre that’s open to the public – and if that isn’t a good enough excuse to begin plotting a Ham Highway 2.0 return, I don’t know what is! There’s an excellent restaurant at the factory plus a well stocked gift shop with all sorts of other PDO and gourmet Italy food and drink products on offer (it’s not just about the ham).

What really blew me away during my visit was the chance to sample DOK’s range of prosciutto made from rare breed pork. Beyond a typical (if high quality) selection of hams and other products, DOK produces three uniquely special hams: Hundok, Nebrodok and Patadok prosciutto. The pork for this ultra-savoury trio is cured in San Daniele and seasoned for at least 24 months but sourced outside the region from what DOK founder Carlo Dall’Ava reckons to be the three best breeds of pigs in the world for making ham.

Hundok is made from Mangalitsa, a wooly breed of pig from Hungary (you’ve got to see these things!). Nebrodok are produced from a breed of Sicilian black pigs. And Patadok is produced from Spain’s famously happy free ranging Pata Negra porkers. Savoury and robust beyond belief, the Patadok prosciutto was one of the tastiest pieces of ham I’ve ever tried – salty and robust with an exceptionally long lasting finish.

San Daniele is the HQ for DOK Dall’ava, and the facility serves as its flagship retail space. However, the brand also has outlets across Italy including a new restaurant and shop in Venice just a few steps from the Rialto Bridge.

Find out more about DOK Dall’ava locations at dallava.com. For more about the brand’s history and products go to dokdallava.com.

Doing Northern Italy’s Dolomite Loop (OneTravel)

DSC_2476

This post is being written with a rear view perspective of a fantastic week I recently spent traveling across northern Italy. To be sure, I intend to blog plenty about my trip and thought I’d start out sharing a suggestion for a great fly-and-drive itinerary I kind of stumbled upon while planning for my time away.

Barista Skills (espressoCrazy) #illyschool

DSC_2232

Recently, I helped organise and host an intimate coffee tasting and training session for a select group of London bloggers. Leading the event was Marco Arrigo – Head of Quality for illy Coffee in the UK – who provided our guests with a hands-on chance to hone their skills making perfect espresso-based drinks, along with a fun and informative ‘beans to cup’ lesson about the history and chemistry of coffee. Marco has trained hundreds of baristas throughout the UK. His course usually takes three days, but he crafted this this one to be a three-hour crash course session especially for bloggers.

A great time was had by all. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s what the half dozen bloggers invited had to say about their #illyschool experience …

Tasty Tales from the Italian Ham Highway: Speck-tacular Views and Smoky Brews in Sauris

DSC_2404

From the heights of the snowcapped Dolomites to the verdant Valle del Cibo, I recently had the delicious pleasure of visiting a number of the finest food and drink producers in northern Italy, taking in lots of pretty countryside along the way and getting to known some of the friendliest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet.

Day two of my foodie odyssey had me saying goodbye to the Dolomite gateway town of Forni di Sopra and heading even higher (and deeper) into the Alps to the tiny Germanic enclave of Sauris for a taste of the local delicacies and to take in the breathtaking views.

The drive from Forni di Sopra to Sauris is roughly 35 or 40 kilometres and pretty much uphill all the way. As the crow flies though, it’s probably not even half that distance. If you like hairpins curves, sheer drop-offs with tight (if any) shoulders and curvy no-end-in-sight tunnels, the routes up to and down from Sauris are for you. Getting there was indeed half the fun for me. I hadn’t been ‘out there and on my own’ in what seemed like ages. When the sat nav emitted a perfunctory “lost satellite reception” report, I knew I was embarked upon the sort of adventure I’d been longing for.

Obviously, I made it back home safely. And in all honesty I was as impressed by the well kept condition of these remote roads as I was by the stunning Alpine scenery. Still, the dilemma of whether to keep both eyes peeled to the road or allow myself to be mesmerised by all the grand scale nature right outside my window proved a bit of a toughie for me.

Once arrived in lofty (and rather snowy) Sauris, I got down to the business that brought me there in the first place: trying the local ham and beer, both of which are a blend of unique Germanic heritage with the best of local ingredients and Italian gastronomic tradition.

Prosciuttificio Wolf

Sauris’ main employer and biggest claim to fame is Prosciuttificio Wolf which produces renowned prosciutto and birch-smoked speck. Prosciutto made in Sauris to a set of exacting standards using limited high quality ingredients is protected by the EU as a PDO product. PDO stands for “Protected Designation of Origin” – this essentially means that the way they produce prosciutto in Sauris is specific to the area and for a ham to be called a Sauris prosciutto is must be made nearby and according to traditional custom.

You can find Wolf hams outside of Italy, but they’re not all that common. If you ever get a chance to sample this small family producer’s range of cured pork, by all means do! I couldn’t get enough of their speck during my visit to the shop and factory.

For details go to wolfsauris.it.

DSC_2431

Zahre Beer

It’s not just ham that’s smoked in Sauris. Local family run brewery Zahre produces a smoked beer that’s out of this world. By ‘family run’ I mean two married couples busting ass to create some of the best beer I personally have ever had. They sell a Pilsner, a sensational hemp beer,  and a red “Vienna” ale in addition to their smoky porter.

I don’t think it’s possible to get Zahre Beer outside of Italy (and hardly anywhere further south than Bologna), and I got the impression that the Zahre folks are pretty content keeping things as basic and small scale as possible. Chatting with Danila Peressotti – one fourth of the Zahre gang and the de facto contact for international dealings due to her excellent command of English – it was explained to me while scanning the range of snow capped mountains as far as I could see, “We already have everything we need here. Why would we want to change that?”

It is possible to purchase Zahre products online at zahrebeer.com.

Stay

I didn’t actually spend the night in Sauris but had a lovely lunch at the panoramically perched hotel Morgenleit. Folks here were super friendly and the views could not be beat. Food in Morgenleit’s restaurant provided a homey introduction to the hearty regional cuisine of Friuli, including the local favourite cheese and potato dish, frico.

See the hotel’s website at morgenleit.com.

Tasty Tales from the Italian Ham Highway: Forni di Sopra and the Dolomite Loop

DSC_2377

From the heights of the snowcapped Dolomites to the verdant Valle del Cibo, I recently had the delicious pleasure of visiting some of the finest food and drink producers in northern Italy, taking in lots of pretty countryside along the way and getting to known some of the friendliest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet.

First stop on my journey along the Italian Ham Highway was the mountain town of Forni di Sopra in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Situated within the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane, Forni serves as an excellent base for outdoor adventure with plenty of nearby (and even in-town) opportunities for skiing, climbing and hiking. And as I discovered, It’s a fantastic place to have a drink as well. Here, the stereotypical Italian bella figura yields to a rugged and independent spirit. In Forni, I came across men with beards of mythic proportions and drank some of the finest craft beers I’d ever tasted. Aside from the snowy Alpine surroundings and the absolute quietude of the night, the scene was enough to have me wonder if I were back home in Hackney. Had I stumbled upon a secret hipster heaven?

Foglie d’Erba

Forni is home to award winning artisanal beer producer, Foglie d’Erba. You can try all the Foglie d’Erba brews and meet brewmaster Gino Perissutti at his birreria in the Coton Hotel. The hotel is owned and run by Gino’s family and is home to the oldest pizzera in the area.

The artisanal beer movement in Italy has exploded over the past five years or so, and Gino seems to be leading the way from his mountain lair with a small selection of tasty yet simply crafted small batch beers made with fresh local water and foraged herbs. (Maybe this reflects my American palate, but) I especially liked the herbal and hoppy IPA, Hopfelia. Good luck coming across these fine beers in London. But hey – there’s all the more reason to pay Forni a visit!

Find out more at birrificiofogliederba.it.

DSC_2391

Stay

While in Forni, I spent the night at friendly little three star hotel, Albergo Taranda. In the heart of town, the Taranda is within easy walking distance of all the shops, restaurants (Al Gris is a great one for local flavour) and bars (I had a potent and warming bombardino at Bar Varmost) not to mention Gino’s birreria. The hotel is exceptionally clean and features spacious balconies with views of the surrounding mountains. An easy one to recommend, I’d be happy to stay there again.

Go to albergotarandan.it for more info.

Do the Dolomite Loop

To get to Forni di Sopra, I’d flown into Venice Marco Polo Airport from London City Airport, hired a car and hit the road upwards and onwards into the Dolomites. My flight was under two hours, and the drive from Venice to Forni took about three hours. From Forni, I carried on to the even more mountainous and remote village of Sauris followed by a quick stopover in San Daniele di Friuli and a couple of days checking out the compact city of Udine and its pastoral surroundings.

I had a blast during this leg of my trip and will share more about these other Dolomite destinations in upcoming posts. Manoeuvring the winding mountain roads in this beautiful area of the southern Alps was a delight. Even though my ‘Dolomite Loop’ only comprised a few nights of my overall time in Italy, it proved to be a fun fly-and-drive excursion that would make a great break in its own right. If you’re keen to experience mountain views, enjoy scrumptious food and drink and discover another side to Italian life, consider doing a Dolomite Loop through the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

Good Stuff

Pâté in a Jar - DSC_2362

Good stuff and lots of it! Here’s the low down on some yummy treats I’ve recently come across and thought were worth sharing with you. Enjoy!

Copas Turkeys

2013 saw the third Thanksgiving in as many years with a Copas Turkey as the centrepiece of my American feast! I highly recommend giving their succulent, flavoursome and easy to roast free-range turkeys a try for your Christmas dinner. And if you’re available this Thursday and can make it to their Berkshire farm, the Copas folks are hosting “Stress-Free Christmas Day” masterclass from 7pm.

Crazy Jack Organic Soft Apricots

I’ve been meaning to write about Crazy Jack Organic Soft Apricots for awhile now. Dried apricots might not sound like that big of a deal but believe you me, these little bite size morsels really pack a wallop of yum! And at only £2.99 for a 250g bag, they’re an inexpensive and much healthier alternative to most on-the-go snacks.

Bootlegger

I’m not quite sure why Brits feel the need to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the end of American prohibition, but that’s just what the folks at Bootlegger are doing this 5th of December. After a recent tasting, the white grain spirit gets a yee haw from me. Find it at Harrods and other premium booze retailers.

Meantime London Smoked Porter

London brewers Meantime have recently launched a new limited edition smoked porter. Complex, full bodied and with a slight taste of Beechwood cured malts, I had a pint and really like it.

Patchwork Traditional Food Company

A few weeks back, I enjoyed sampling a Pâté in a Jar alongside some spelt organic oat fingers from the Patchwork Traditional Food Company. Handmade in the Welsh countryside, packaged in nifty little boxes for easy gifting and sold online with free next day delivery, the products are a no brainer for festive season noshing.

Tasty Tales from the Italian Ham Highway: Ciao and Grazie!

DSC_2934

Epic. It’s a word I tend to overuse these days. But in reference to my recent gourmand journey across the north of Italy, I’ve coming up short for a better description of the experience. From the heights of the snowcapped Dolomites to the verdant Valle del Cibo, I had the delicious pleasure of visiting a number of the finest food producers in the country, taking in lots of pretty countryside along the way and getting to known some of the friendliest people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet.

Over the next several days I will share highlights from my adventure in a Tasty Tales from the Italian Ham Highway miniseries of posts featuring entries about the following phenomenal destinations – Forni di Sopra, Sauris, San Daniele, Udine, Collio, Trento, Torino, Parma, Modena, and Bologna – all with tips and suggestions to help you plan your own delectable itinerary.

Grazie!

Georgians Revealed at the British Library in London (OneTravel)

DSC_2154

A newly opened exhibition at the British Library in London – Georgians Revealed: Life, Style and the Making of Modern Britain – takes an in depth look at the lives of people living in Britain during the Georgian era (roughly the early 1700s to the mid 1800s) and examines whether the Georgians were “tasteful and polite, or riotous and pleasure-obsessed?” Much like people in contemporary British society today, the answer is an fascinating (if ambiguous) “yes.”

Mamounia Lounge Mayfair Reopens: Swish!

DSC_2050

About a year ago, I paid a visit to the then newly opened Mamounia Lounge in Knightsbridge. Just as it was launching, its sister outlet in Mayfair was closing down for a refurb. Last month, Mamounia Lounge Mayfair re-opened. With both Mamounias up and running, Londoners now have two swank reasons to enjoy a night out in Arabian style. Here’s a quick report from my recent visit to the re-opend Mayfair venue.

As at ML Knightsbridge, odds are if you visiting during the evening you’ll get to catch a belly dancer gyrate through the dining area. And if you’re lucky (or is that unlucky) like me, you’ll get pulled from your seat and be expected to wiggle along with her Yeah, it’s a fun place to visit. Lavish too – and a little over the top, though still well within the confines of good taste.

The food is quality Middle Eastern. Harira soup (traditional Moroccan vegetable soup with saffron, lentils, vermicelli, coriander and chickpeas, £6.50) is lovely starter. The drinks are swell too. Consider the Mamounia Special (fresh basil shaken with Stoli Vanilla Vodka,
lime juice and sugar served over crushed ice, £8). Refreshing! The vibe: Mayfair swank with an exotic edge. There’s shisha out front with heat lamps too.

Prices reflect the area expectations and fall in line with the lounge’s proximity to Berkley Square, but that said aren’t unreasonable given preparation, presentation and proportion. An ample Mixed Grill selection of “all our grilled meats” (skewers of chicken, lamb and kafta) costs £18. For puds, the mahalabia (“Arabic pudding” garnished with pistachios, £6) is a real treat.

Mamounia Lounge Mayfair is located at 37A Curzon Street, W1J7TX. Find out more at mamounialounge.com.

London Daily Photo: Henry Winkler, OBE

LDP 2013.11.29 - Henry Winkler, OBEHenry Winkler meets a young fan just after turning on the festive lights in the courtyard of the Marriott County Hall.

Henry Winkler was in town last night to switch on the Christmas lights at the London Marriott Hotel County Hall.
Best known for playing Arthur Fonzarelli on the long run American television series Happy Days, the 68 year old actor is in the UK at the moment promoting and supporting his My Way! campaign to encourage children with learning difficulties. Winkler was made an honorary Officer of the British Empire in September 2011 “for services to children with special educational needs and dyslexia in the UK”.

The Fonz was one of my first heroes, and it was a pleasure to meet (however briefly) the man who entertained my family and me for a decade as the singular embodiment of cool.

Thanks!

DSC_2826

2013. This year has flown by for me. And yes that old adage about having fun definitely applies. More than ever – and to a much greater extent than the vast majority of folks I know can claim – I’ve had the incredibly good fortune to be able to do what I want when and how I want. Even when I’ve been overwhelmingly busy (something that’s been especially common this year), frustrated about a particular project, worried about my financial situation, or just having a bad day, I have had to acknowledge that I’ve got it pretty good and that there’s been truly little to complain about.

Still, I must admit that many of this year’s ups have been accompanied by an unusually sizeable heap of downs. 2013 has been a tough one for me in a lot of ways. At 41, I feel I’ve started only now to get a grip on human nature and actually appreciate the nuance and ambiguity of so many people’s motives. In some ways though, I’m most thankful for a few hard lessons learned and a couple of bitter pills I’ve had to swallow. I can’t say I’ve enjoyed having to ‘wise up’ so much, but I must admit that shedding naiveté and figuring out how to waste less time as well as how to steer clear of jerks definitely have their merits.

Anyway, the rest of 2013 seems to be winding down to end on a pleasant note with some especially tasty adventures and opportunities building for next year. More than anything, I look forward to taking it easy and simply relaxing with Kemey and our cat Winston over Christmas and New Years and heading to the States to visit with family and friends early in 2014. I don’t need much else really, and that’s a fantastic feeling.

Happy Thanksgiving.

Waaaaaay back at the end of May I travelled up to the remote island of Jura to check out its annual Whisky Festival. This year’s event was even more worthy of red letters on the Jura calendar than usual, as the occasion marked 50th anniversary of the island’s distillery.

Here’s an excerpt from the piece I wrote for City AM about my experience:

I had travelled from London to attend the Jura’s annual Whisky Festival, which had been grafted onto the week-long Feis Ile festivities on the neighbouring island of Islay. Islay, home to Ardbeg, Bowmore, Lagavulin, Laphroaig and a handful of other notable distilleries, is the reigning champion of all things single malt and peaty – and that’s about all it’s famous for. Compared to almost anywhere else in the world, Islay would seem a backwater. Next to Jura, it’s a bustling commercial centre.

The main draw of the festival was a series of exclusive tastings led by Whyte & Mackay reps such as Richard Paterson, Master Blender for the past 40 years at Glasgow-based whisky producer Whyte & Mackay (makers of Jura whisky), is a third generation whisky man who has work …

How to Holiday Abroad on a Budget (Guest)

If you haven’t managed to get away this summer holiday you may already be thinking about when you might be able to have a holiday, and how you can afford it on a budget. If you plan well and shop around, then you can have a fantastic break without upsetting the bank manager. Everyone needs to switch off for a bit, and those with money worries have even more of a reason to escape the stress for a few days. A holiday shouldn’t add to your stress levels though, and there are a few ways you can make sure it doesn’t.

Flights

Flights vary massively in price depending on the airline, when you book, and what time the flight departs and arrives. Early morning flights tend to be much cheaper than daytime ones so look for the anti-social hours first. If you have to travel to the airport for an early flight it is often easier to stay locally the previous night, and by staying at the Travelodge in Heathrow airport this needn’t be a big additional cost. Price out the difference between booking well in advance, booking a few months prior, and finding last minute deals, to see which is the least costly. There are lots of forums online offering advice on how to get the best deal with different airlines using this method.

Timing

If you don’t have kids you may not know when the school holidays are, but it is definitely worth finding out as the prices of a getaway jump right up at these times. Make the most of being able to travel when families can’t to get the best deals. Greater demand for holidays means higher pricing so seek out the least popular dates to travel. The added bonus of doing this is that flights, hotels, and resorts will be less crowded so you can have a quiet chilled out break. If you have kids but they are not yet at school, make the most of the ability to have cheaper holidays, as soon enough you will have to pay the premium rates if you want to go away.

Build your own

Package deals may look like an attractive option, as they take all the organising out of booking a holiday. They are not always the most cost efficient solution however and you can find some great pocket friendly prices by buying your flights and accommodation separately. It may take a lot more time to do, but you could end up on the same holiday as someone on a package deal for half the price. When it comes to activities whilst abroad you do not need to stick to the traditional costly tourist options. Simply being away from the daily grid and relaxing is enough for many holidaymakers and you can find loads of things to do that won’t cost the earth. Picnic on the beach, visit local museums or explore a nearby city all for a very small price.

Wherever you decide to go on your next holiday, be money savvy. You shouldn’t have to stress for the rest of the year because you’ve decided to take a break. Do your homework and find the best option for you, then chill out in the knowledge that you can afford to have a good time abroad.

How to Make Merry Like Robin Hood in Nottingham and Sherwood Forest (CheapOair)

DSC_1931

I’m writing this post from the back end of a fantastic day trip to Nottinghamshire. Only about a 140 miles or so from Central London, Nottingham and its environs are an ideal destination to add to any England touring itinerary. History and legend seem to meld together in this part of world, adding ample fun and a bit of mystique to any visit – whether you’re there to wander round the city streets, wind your way across an age-old forest or simply grab a pint in the pub. Here are some highlights from my recent journey into the heart of England.

Exploring the Possibilities with espressoCrazy’s Ultimate illy Mixed Case (Espresso Crazy)

DSC_1175

Okay. So you’ve got your iperEspresso coffee machine from illy placed prominently on your kitchen counter and, if you’re like me, you’ve been caught up in something of a caffeine-fueled love affair with the machine ever since (I was completely hooked after my second shot). Expecting a perfect espresso to be made quickly and easily with minimal fuss became a regular part of my morning ritual soon after plugging in my Francis Francis Y1.1 Touch. Now I’m having a delicious time deciding which iperEspresso capsules suit my palate best.

Recently, I’ve been sipping my way through illy’s Ultimate Mixed Case of iperEspresso capsules. With a mix of five different iperEspresso capsules, giving the Mixed Case a try is great way to sample the illy capsule range and find out which ones are best for you.
