Daphne’s Restaurant Teams up with A-List Celebrities to Raise Funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity

Ronnie Wood

A host of the UK’s best loved celebrities has teamed up with Daphne’s restaurant to give their own unique interpretation of a pen and ink sketch to raise vital funds for Great Ormond Street Hospital Children’s Charity.

The sketch – a simple heart-shaped design created by East London illustrator, Emiloumakes – was inspired by the children’s cardiology unit at Great Ormond Street Hospital and the money raised from the sale will be put towards a four bed bay on the new cardiac ward. The new ward will provide families with modern facilities where a parent or carer can stay by their child’s bedside in comfort.

The 13 unique works, which will sell for £1,000 each, were created by an array of actors, presenters, artists, designers and musicians including Alan Rickman, Alison Jackson, Bill Nighy, Giles Deacon, Helena Bonham Carter, Jade Jagger, Jessie J, PPQ, Ronnie Wood, Russell Tovey, Theo Fennell, Victoria Pendleton, Zaha Hadid who were given free rein with the simple heart sketch and were at liberty to interpret and embellish it as they wished, offering the public a unique and rare insight into their minds and personal style through their own creative interpretation.

Says Richard Caring, owner of Daphne’s:

Daphne’s is a traditional local Italian restaurant and at weekends the place is full of the sound of laughter as children eat with their parents and grandparents. With this in mind we teamed up with Great Ormond Street Hospital so we could help them raise money through the Daphne’s Drawings. A host of celebrities … have used the image of a heart and drawn some fantastic pieces that will be exhibited and for sale in the restaurant, which celebrates its 50th anniversary next year.

The 50cm x 70cm paintings will be hung in Daphne’s light and airy rooms from Wednesday 4 September until Tuesday 1 October.

Daphne’s is located at 112 Draycott Avenue, SW3 3AE. Find out more at daphnes-restaurant.co.uk. For more info about Great Ormond Street Hospital visit gosh.org.

London Daily Photo: La Vie Est Belle with Pierre Hermé

DSC_9518

I spent yesterday afternoon at the Residence de France at 11 Kensington Palace Gardens (the official home of the French Ambassador) previewing some seriously delectable macarons and more by pâtissier-confectioneur extraordinaire Pierre Hermé.

Much of what I tasted is under strict embargo until later this year, but let me assure you that it’s all well worth the wait. So stayed tuned for more details. Until then, I can tell you that Hermé’s Fetish Ispahan range will be available from 22 October to 8 December. A blend of rose, lychee and raspberry, the “Ispahan” flavour comes in variety of forms such as macarons, granola, bonbon and confiture. Look for Pierre Hermé treats online, in Selfridges and at his boutique in Belgravia.

Are Legends Born … or are They Dropped?

Are legends born or are they dropped? That’s what premium beer brand Heineken aims to find out through its latest campaign by testing the resourcefulness of a few select men and seeing how they manage on unfamiliar turf and inexplicable situations.

Image finding yourself in the freezing wilderness of Alaska – alone on a glacier, with nothing but a giant life-ring, a tuxedo and a plane ticket to get you home – and the airport is hundreds of miles away. How would you cope? What would you do?

Voyage is Heineken’s latest campaign, plucking men from around the world out of their daily routines and dropping them at remote global locations with nothing but the most basic of supplies and directions. Across four continents, the participants face a range of challenges as they struggle to reach the final destination: home. Will they make it? The answer lies within each individual.

Kalixa Prepaid MasterCard

Kalixa Prepaid MasterCard - DSC_9414

Kalixa Pay is a new prepaid MasterCard and eAccount. I was invited to set up an account recently and have since found the card to be a practical addition to my wallet’s somewhat limited arsenal of plastic. For specific budgets, one-off projects, special occasions and travel, I reckon Kalixa Pay is an ideal option for managing how much you spend.

Essentially, the Kalixa card works just like a debit card. Except unlike a debit card, when the account runs out of money, that’s it: no overdraft, no minimum balance. It can be used all around the world – wherever the MasterCard acceptance mark is displayed – both to shop in stores and withdraw cash from ATMs. And because it’s a prepaid card, there’s less chance of going into debt like with a credit card), or giving fraudsters direct access to your bank or credit card accounts. The online account interface is straightforward and, for me anyway, has proved a lot quicker to update than my online banking current accounts do.

A few weeks back,, I tried out my Kalixa card at the pub during a birthday get-together for my girlfriend. I figured out what I would be able to spend toward the festivities and loaded that amount to my Kalixa account straight from my banking current account (instantly and securely via the web) and was ready to go. Obviously, I needed to keep track of my spending and asked for a tab update from the bartender. At the end of the night, there was actually a bit of money left on the account. With that, I’ve used the card as I normally would have done with my debit card – for groceries, little treats (see frozen yoghurt pic above) … things like that.

There’s a one-time £6.95 charge to set up a Kalixa Pay account and receive your card. And there’s one bummer that I’ve come across: ATM fees. It’s £1.75 per domestic ATM withdrawal and £2.25 for withdrawals abroad – nothing exorbitant but mildly annoying. I suppose the benefits outweigh the costs though. For example, Kalixa offers the best available currency exchange rates with no FX fees. Account holders get receive free SMS and email transaction alerts and weekly balance alerts too. All the many features along with the very few fees are laid out at kalixapay.com.

I fully intend to continue spending with Kalixa. I can see my card coming in handy next time I’ve got a work-related budget that I’d rather not mix up with the rest my expenditures. And the card no doubt be utilised the next time I travel internationally.

Theatre Review: Ayndrilla Singharay’s Unsung at The Rosemary Branch Theatre

000 111 unsung

British-Bengali writer Ayndrilla Singharay’s premiere play Unsung re-imagines Rabindranath Tagore’s short story Punishment in a contemporary London setting. The result is effectual theatre for the audience and an especially impressive first attempt by Singharay.

Only on at The Rosemary Branch through this weekend, Unsung tells the story of two brothers and their wives. Presenting a message against gender violence, it’s not a pretty story nor is it one that will leave you feeling all that positive – although perhaps a little hopeful – about humanity. Maybe things are gradually getting better, the play seems to suggest, but they’re still fundamentally bad.

During the performance I caught, direction (Lucy Allen) was spot-on if slightly rushed while a quartet of actors (Niall Ray, Avita Jay, Rez Kabir and Nadia Nadif) brought overall quality performances to the small theatre-above-the-pub stage.

I didn’t know much about Tagore before seeing Unsung but reckon it presented a fine introduction. Having seen Unsung, I’m certainly keen to learn more about the Bengali writer (and to keep an eye out for more work by Singharay). With 2013 marking the centenary of his receipt of the Nobel Prize (the first time an non-European won the award), now’s a particularly meaningful time. Says Singharay about staging her work based on Tagore’s Punishment:

I am thrilled about the London premiere of Unsung at the Rosemary Branch Theatre. Tagore’s art has always been part of my life and I feel privileged to be able to share my modern re-invention of his short story, Punishment, on the London stage. I hope that the play will demonstrate just how damaging our expectations of one another can be and explore a universal question – how much should you sacrifice for your family?

Unsung runs until 8 September at The Rosemary Branch Theatre, a canal side pub located at 2 Shepperton Road, N1 3DT. Tickets cost £12 (£10 for concessions). Find out more at rosemarybranch.co.uk.

Coming Soon: The Clockjack Chicken Burger

Clockjack Oven's Spicy Chicken Thigh Burger - DSC_9473

Sometime this week, Soho’s Clockjack Oven will launch the Clockjack Chicken Burger – a fried chicken thigh burger with a bit of a kick to it. Lucky clucker that I am, I had a chance to sample a prototype of the new burger last week. It was truly delicious and I reckon will prove to be a very popular addition to an already tasty menu.

Priced at £8.95, the Clockjack Chicken Burger will consist of a super tender and succulent buttermilk-marinated fried chicken thigh topped with jalapeño peppers and tomato salsa and served in a sesame seed buttermilk bun.

For me, getting to sneak peek taste of the burger proved an excellent opportunity to see how things are going at this Denman Street eatery. All good as far as I could tell. As a fan of Clockjack Oven’s ethically sourced free range rotisserie chicken as well as its awesome selection of sides (great coleslaw and double cooked chips) and sauces (excellent ranch sauce!), I’m pleased to report that the coleslaw and double cooked chips were still yummy and of ample proportion, the sauces still rocked, and service was efficient and friendly as during previous visits. Gorgeous new burger or not, it’s a safe bet for a more than decent meal.

Clockjack Oven is located at 14 Denman Street, W1D 7HJ. Find out more at clockjackoven.com.

Fine Dining at Quantus in Chiswick, West London (OneTravel)

DSC_9269

Another great restaurant to add to my growing list of London’s best is Quantus. Offering an exquisite menu of modern European cuisine with a strong Latin influence and a wine list that’s inspired and rather Latin tinged as well, this local west London fine dining establishment is a great option for foodies foraging around West London in search of excellence. Service at this lovely little Chiswick local is formal and prompt yet exceptionally friendly, and the prices are a huge relief.

I Beg Your Pardon? Twinings Has Introduced a Rose Garden?

Twinings Rose Garden black tea - DSC_9511

That’s right. Initially only sold as part of the Twinings Limited Edition range due to popular demand Rose Garden black tea is now permanently available.

That’s good news if you’re like me and love the flavour of rose. But don’t take my word alone for it, this tea was one of four Twinings teas to win a 2012 Great Taste Award. Add this to an already fantastic selection that includes eye opening green tea, refreshing redbush and plenty more and it becomes apparent there’s a lot more to Twinings than just elegant Earl Greys and robust English Breakfast teas.

Jack the Tripper by @judeswalko

Here’s a contribution from my old pal Jude Walko. I’ve know Jude since I was a kid back in Georgia. These days, Jude works as a producer, writer and director and spends his time between Los Angeles and Bangkok with his wife and two children. His next two slated projects are The Unhallowed Horseman and Devil’s Corps – both of which he wrote and will direct. You can read more about Jude’s movie career at imdb.com/name/nm0908351/.

Jack Grimsby was an ordinary man. So ordinary, in fact, that in and of itself there is nothing out of the ordinary to say about his life, ever … until now that it is.

Tilia: Online Home Delivery Service of Artisan Food and Drink. Try it and Love it!

Tilia: London's First Artisan Delivery Service - DSC_9319

Tilia is a new online home delivery service connecting Londoners with local suppliers of artisan food and drink. At the moment, it’s a London only thing, but there are plans for rapid nationwide expansion. I recently gave Tilia a twirl. Completely impressed, I loved every aspect of the experience. Indeed, I’m keen to try the service again (and again!) and can wholeheartedly recommend it as an incredibly convenient way to get top quality grub to your table.

Tilia’s product range is delectable. I enjoyed clicking through the selection of treats available from shops already among my foodie favourites, such as W1 butcher Allen’s of Mayfair and Islington fishmonger Steve Hatt, while also browsing the site for new discoveries. I am now a huge fan of Belle Epoque Patisserie in Stoke Newington and hope to pay them a visit soon. Finding one of my all time most craved cheeses (Selles sur Cher, from Chiswick’s Mortimer & Bennett) was a delight as well.

Tilia: London's First Artisan Delivery Service - DSC_9365

Yep, that’s right. I got yummy stuff from Mayfair, Essex Road, Stokie and Chiswick (and a few other places) brought to my door as one delivery. And as my order was over 50 quid (and I reckon a good valued 50 quid at that), there wasn’t any delivery charge. The goods arrived within the first 30 minutes of my chosen two-hour timeslot (a rather late night one as well – 8pm to 10pm – which I reckon would accommodate many Londoners’ hectic lives) with a smile.

Of course, poking round some of this city’s finer food shops is an absolute pleasure – the aromas, the on hand advice, the look and feel – that should never be replaced. Still, if you’re shopping for a little bit of this and a little bit of that you either have to compromise on preference at some point or simply give up more than a few hours of your day to buy everything on your list. Maybe Tilia takes an important chunk of fun out of gourmet food shopping, but the service more than makes up for it by allowing you to spend your time attending to other aspects of your busy schedule.

The reason for my Tilia order was to celebrate a special at-home occasion. From a fantastic and relaxed coffee and croissant start to my day to a dressed crab lunch and a superb home cooked meal that evening (with all sorts of snacking in between and plenty of gorgeous leftovers and nibbles afterward), I’m pleased to report total success.

London Daily Photo: Lunch with Siba

LDP 2013.08.27 - Lunch with Siba

Lunch today came compliments of South African chef Siba Mtongaga who was in town today to promote her new Food Network UK series, Siba’s Table. Look for the show to premiere on the Food Network UK 23 September and to be aired weekdays at 12.30pm and 6.30pm.

One part “how to” and one part lifestyle the show is brought to you by the team who created Nigella’s Kitchen and Barefoot Contessa and filmed on location in Cape Town, South Africa where the young chef creates and serves a range of dishes for her friends and family. Judging from my lunch today, I can vouch that Siba is an especially gracious host and that she makes a mean chakalaka.

View from My Saddle by @Petalon_Flowers

000 1 p07

Petalon is a new flower delivery company making it easier, more accessible and greener to send flowers in London. Two different bouquets are offered every week and chosen depending on what’s in season and looks particularly fantastic at the market. Petalon flowers are always delivered by bicycle and always cost £20 with £2 of every bunch donated to Capital Bee, a London not-for-profit campaigning for bee-friendly practices.

Petalon proprietor, Florence Hill, recently got in touch with me to see if I might want to write about her “bouquets by bicycle” business. It turned out that we’re neighbours and an impromptu knees up at the local soon ensued. I was immediately impressed with Florence’s enthusiasm and by her huge and radiant smile. She seems to be onto something good with Petalon, if only for her own fitness and sunny disposition.

Florence and I decided the best way for me to help spread the word about her environmentally friendly enterprise would be to hand my blog over to her for a “day in the life” piece about what she does. Here is the lovely result of that decision. Enjoy.

Petalon Flowers: View from My Saddle

5am

Yeah, early starts are all part of the process if you want to get the good stuff at the flower market! Our local wholesalers are only a ten minute cycle away, through Hackney Marshes and with views over the Olympic Park it’s pretty special at sunrise.

000 1 p01

The market is another world. Open from midnight until 10am with huge Artic lorries, fork lift trucks and transit vans weaving in and around towering stacks of mangoes, parsnips, lychee and everything in between – specialising in exotic fruit and veg, it’s Europe’s leading horticultural market.

000 1 p02

I park my bicycle and trailer behind a pile of broken fork lift trucks to keep it safe from lorry death and go see what flowers are in today. The lovely lads in the giant flower fridge greet me with sugary tea and a rundown of what’s new in this morning with special care to point out what’s British. I spend the next hour deliberating over what goes into the bouquets for the new week’s choice.

000 1 p03

Colin (think flower bouncer) helps me get my loot in the trailer and I pedal back to the workshop for breakfast before taking the dog for a quick spin around the park.

000 1 p05

8am to 12pm

I start taking orders for the day and putting together bouquets. As we do same day delivery I take orders until I leave for delivery in the afternoon. There’s a lot of thorn stripping and stem snipping to make the bouquets look their best. I create a water source for each bunch and wrap them in Hessian before neatly writing out the messages to send today. It’s so good to see people sending flowers for special reasons that aren’t grand occasions – “Thank you so much for dinner last night!” “only one week of work left before our holiday!” – it’s exactly how I wanted people to use Petalon.

000 1 p06

12pm

After loading the trailer with deliveries for the day the rest of the afternoon is spent cycling the streets of London delivering beautiful flowers. Planning each day’s route is pretty fun, and I get to see parts of the city I’ve never been to before. Petalon delivers as far west as Hyde Park, and as far south as Bermondsey. So, I cover a lot of ground – it’s at least 20 miles a day so it’s definitely keeping me fit!

000 1 p08

5pm

That’s the bulk of my day done. I spend the rest of the evening concentrating on the business side of Petalon, catching up on emails, doing all the less glamorous admin and relaxing with my partner James and dog Huxley.

Photography and writing by Florence Hill. Find out more about how Florence is making flower delivery in London simple, accessible and bee-friendly at petalon.co.uk.

Best Fish and Chips in London? The Perkin Reveller at The Tower of London

Fish and Chips, the Perkin Reveller at The Tower of London - DSC_9382

So the PR-sent invitation to review the Perkin Reveller suggested that this new all day dining hall and bar served the best fish and chips in town. After my visit I’d politely disagree. However, such a conclusion isn’t too far off the mark. For a touristic all rounder wedged between The Tower of London and Tower Bridge, this place dishes out a quality dining experience and an excellent introduction to the best of British fare.

Yeah, I was really impressed with my meal. Everything was tasty and freshly prepared and (according to the menu anyway) seasonal and made with local produce. Service was friendly. The view was iconic.

The fish and chips were indeed delicious. Ample too. I reckon the chips were at least double cooked. Mushy peas weren’t some industrial-made neon slop but properly mashed and lightly minted and full of flavour. The tartar sauce was creamy and just the right kind of tangy.

I’ve had better fish and chips in London but not much better and I would not be averse to having another go at the Perkin Reveller next time the urge hits. The meal was one of a few choices from the set menu offering two courses for £15 and three at £18. Soup of the day (pea soup) was especially yummy and carrot cake with marmalade ice cream was a treat. Beyond the set menu, there are plenty of crowd pleaser items.

I enjoyed a crisp pint of Meantime London Lager (£4.25) with my nosh and got a kick out of it being presented in a lovely ceramic jug. Nice (if very kitsch) touch to my lunch! Had it been a little later in the day, I probably would have gone for something stronger though. The cocktail list intrigued me with its enchanting concoctions like the British Noggin (home made spiced vodka, milk, home made saffron syrup and quail egg, £8) and the London Fog (infused darjeeling tea gin, home-made black tea syrup, soya milk & home-made almond milk. all fermented three weeks in cedar barrel, £8.50).

Going over the notes from my visit, there are plenty more positives I could share. But I liked discovering these aspects for myself and deciding that I’d happened upon somewhere that was a cut above the competition. It was also refreshing to follow up on a press release asserting something was the “best” and finding that not to be hyperbolic fluff. If you’re visiting The Tower, a pit stop here is a no brainer. There’s plenty of indoor and covered outdoor seating and food is served throughout the day with something on the menu for all tastes. If you work nearby or pass through the area on a regular basis, you’d be wise to give the Perkin Reveller a try as well. I think you’ll find your experience more than pleasant and a lot better than most comparable options in close proximity.

The Perkin Reveller is located at The Wharf at The Tower of London, EC3N 4AB. Find out more at perkinreveller.co.uk.

The Picture of Dorian Gray at “Dorian Gray’s Townhouse” in London (OneTravel)

Creative Director (Samuel Orange) and Dorian Gray (River Hawkins)

Recently, I caught a performance of the Oscar Wilde classic The Picture of Dorian Gray. An immersive piece of theatre set in an actually lived-in Georgian townhouse, the play served as an excellent opportunity to enjoy a piece of great literature brought to life while getting to snoop around a bit in someone else’s home. If you’re planning to visit London before the end of September, this adaptation could prove a quirky and cultured item to your itinerary.

And what we found is that worthy beer now resides almost everywhere.
