Wine of the Month: Beaumont des Crayères Grande Réserve Brut NV
Yeah, crappy photo I know. But when I sat down to write my latest WOTM review, I realized the quaff pictured above was a way more interesting wine than the one I had slated to review and had taken nice pictures of. Luckily I had been so blown away by Beaumont des Crayères Grande Réserve that upon my initial sip, I reached for my phone to take a quick photo for memory’s sake.
My first taste of Beaumont des Crayères was at a recent little get together with some friends. We’d decided to have our own non-Bubble Dogs party after trying and failing to get a rez at that novel and new hot dogs and Champagne restaurant now open in Fitzrovia. A number of reviews of BDs have turned out to be less than flattering anyway and the idea of striving to get in (I must admit I gave it a few attempts) started to lose its sheen. Nevertheless, the thought of munching on hot dogs and washin’ ’em down with some fine bubbly appealed. So … voila! Why don’t we just make our own hot dogs for our very own BYOC session. I supplied my homemade chilli con carne along with some store bought slaw.
I sampled a few flutes of different bubblies that night. My fave without doubt was the bready, buttery, yeasty Beaumont des Crayères. Crisp, full bodied and elegant … and I’d say well worth what appears to be the £20 or so to buy it online in the UK! It was certainly a lot tastier and intriguing than too many other sparkling wines I’ve had of late.
The Grande Réserve worked well with our fatty hot dogs (so did my chilli), but I’d be keen to giving this one a solo sipping next time I come across a bottle. It’d make a smart choice for an aperitif too.
Check out champagne-beaumont.com for more info.

Shepard Fairey: Sound & Vision Opens at Stolenspace
The much anticipated Sound & Vision exhibition by Shepard Fairey officially opens to the public tomorrow and runs until 4 November at Stolenspace in two spots: the permanent gallery space and the Old Truman Brewery’s Loading Bay on Dray Walk both just off Brick Lane.
The show is cool … and massive. In addition to showing off the artist’s exceptional skills, the exhibition puts his especially awesome record collection on display.
Tonight’s RSVP only opening was jam packed with queues almost completely around the block. Expect similar fervour over the weekend. Unless you absolutely must see this show as soon as possible, I’d recommend giving it a few days for a more manageable and elbow-roomier experience.
More at stolenspace.com.

Le Parfait: Tried and True French Preserving Jars and Terrines Now Available in the UK
Le Parfait has been making jars and terrines in France since the 1930s but have only this month started to sell stuff here in the UK (just online at the moment). I went along to Le Parfait’s launch party a couple of weeks ago and, to be honest, actually wasn’t quite sure what I was going to attend. As clear as the invite and press materials were, I still thought there must be more to this party than some folks simply trying to peddle preserving jars.
So when at the launch I realized that jars and terrines (along with all the labels, rubber seals, etc – even sterilizers) were actually all there was to the event, my initial reaction was kind of a rude “so?” of an eye roll. But then I started thinking about all the over hyped yet utterly useless crap that makes its way to market these days as well as all the snazzy launches and ceremonious opening parties I’ve gone to over the years only to see the businesses shut down soon after.
80 years making something practical and simple … and taking plenty of time before moving into a new market: that’s awesome. I came home with some Le Parfait jars. They seem pretty strong and are made of heat resistant glass. Obviously, they’re recyclable too.
The party was a lot of fun too. I sample all sorts of treats preserved in Le Parfait kit and came home with a massive jar of vanilla poached pear preserve and a smaller jar (single serving) of salmon confit. Both were yum.
The launch also served as a nice stroll down memory lane, reminding me of when I was a kid and my parents would take over the kitchen every autumn to make gallon upon gallon of preserves from the blackberries and muscadines picked in the woods behind our house. Wonderful. I’m now really hankering to do some preserving … probably won’t do much foraging round my Hackney home though.
Find out more about Le Parfait and discover a bunch of awesome recipes and preserving tips at leparfait.com.

Win a Free Limited Edition Duro Olowu Umbrella – Courtesy of Le Méridien Piccadilly
Would you like an attractive limited edition designer umbrella to shield yourself from the element in style? Then keep reading because I’ve got a beauty of a parasol to giveaway.
One of the highlights of my “Le Méridien at Frieze” experience last week was getting to check out the Duro Olowu umbrella installation at the fair. The installation was commissioned to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Outset Frieze Art Fair Fund to Benefit the Tate Collection. OFT is organised and funded by Outset Contemporary Art Fund with support from Le Méridien Hotels & Resorts.
Duro’s designs are inspired by his Jamaican-Nigerian heritage and his London upbringing. His fans include Michelle Obama and Uma Thurman.
The installation featured two dynamic and vibrant umbrella designs with Olowu’s signature fabrics (one colour and one black and white). Launched at Frieze, the umbrellas are now on sale at only a few outlets, including the shops at Tate Britain and Tate Modern.
There are only 500 of Olowu’s colour design umbrellas in existence. But thanks to Le Méridien Piccadilly I have one to give away!
If you’d like to be in with a chance of winning one of the limited edition umbrellas, please answer the following question in the comments section of this post by 6pm (British time) on Friday 19 October:
Which anniversary is OFT celebrating this year?
- 2nd,
- 5th or
- 10th?
I’ll pick a winner at random and get in touch over the weekend. You’ll need to have an address in the UK for the umbrella to be delivered. Good luck!
COMPETITION IS NOW CLOSED AND WINNERS HAVE BEEN SELECTED/CONTACTED. THANKS SO MUCH FOR YOUR COMMENTS. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR MORE FUN AND FREEBIES TO COME!

When in Parma, Eat Like the Parmiggiani (Blue Tomato)
As the old adage goes, when in Rome you’d be wise to follow the Roman lead. Of course, even in the Eternal City, when sitting down for a Roman sup, there’s a good chance the ham and cheese would be from a couple of hundred miles or so up the Appia Way in Parma.

Recipe: Adam Gray’s Parsnip and Apple Soup
Feel that bit of chill in the air this evening? That means it’s a good night for soup, and chef Adam Gray’s parsnip and apple soup is as warming and satisfying as any seasonal slurp could be.
I’ve just had a bowl and a half or so of this filling autumnal treat along with a generously torn off piece of baguette and an equally ample sprinkling of freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano. And now I’m kicked back on the sofa with my feet propped up, thinking “man, that was some damn fine soup.” Cool thing is, I made it myself. It was pretty inexpensive, only had a few ingredients and was so easy to make. And it’s just one of a whole heap of seasonal soup recipes available for free on the Great British Chefs site.
I wouldn’t mind making this little parsnip and apple number again – on another quiet night in or even for finicky dinner party guests (I’d check to see if they liked very dairy recipes first though). Parsnips have a lot of unique flavour and work well with the couple of Granny Smith apples that are called for in the recipe. The milk and single cream yield a smooth texture, and if you follow the recipe right (like I said, it’s easy) this turns out to be a really light dish.
One thing to keep in mind if you’re not too familiar with cooking parsnips: make sure you get enough. The recipe says to use 500 grams of parsnips. Of course, after paring and removing the woody centres the 500 grams you got at the shop might have dwindled some. Also, unlike a lot of stuff I tend to cook, this one takes awhile to prepare – about an hour or so. It’s definitely worth the wait and minimal effort involved though. I swear.
Anyway, I’m gonna go back to rubbing my belly and feeling all warm and fuzzy about my soup.
Godiva Chocolate Christmas Preview
Premium Belgian chocolate maker, Godiva Chocolatier, recently previewed its new collection of
Christmas treats. I was there. It was tasty. Here’s what’ll be on offer from Godiva from the 8th of November (here in the UK anyway):
Three new chocolate Christmas trees in specially designed gift boxes
The Sapin Noisette (hazelnut praliné, cinnamon and ginger), Sapin Amande (almond praliné, honey and sel
de Guerande) and Sapin Macadamia (macadamia praliné, mandarin and cardamom) will all be available in
newly designed gift boxes ranging in size from four to 17 pieces. These are pretty awesome.
Christmas figures
White chocolate snowman, milk chocolate reindeer and a gingerbread man. Cute.
Advent calendar
Filled with both signature and seasonal chocolates to showcase the whole Godiva range.
Beaded Christmas ball
Nice, Christmassy keepsake container filled with 22 chocolate squares.
Royal Swarovski Box
Fancy schmancy suede gift box covered in Swarovski crystals forming the Godiva emblem with 61 pieces of Godiva’s signature assortment inside.
The preview was at Cafe Godiva, located on the second floor of Harrods. It’s one of only two such cafes in the world (the other one’s in Beijing) and seemed like an especially luxe place to rest one’s shopping-weary feet while indulging in everything from a three layer “ Hot Chocolixir” to a chocolate afternoon tea or a glass of bubbly.

Nothing Like Chocolate: A Fine Film for a Good Cause (Great British Chefs)
Narrated by Susan Sarandon, the movie centres around the work of “anarchist chocolatier” Mott Green and the Grenada Chocolate Company he co-founded in 1999. Offering an ethical and sustainable alternative to big biz chocolate, the Grenada Chocolate Company cuts out the middleman and the crap ingredients associated with so many of the big biz products. Ethics and sustainability aside, this worker-run cooperative also makes award winning, small batch fine chocolate using what’s considered to be some of the best cocoa available in the world. And even for viewers who could care less about chocolate (implausible as that seems), the kindly if iconoclastic Mott is a hoot of a hero with his friendly and frenetic demeanour. The green isle of Grenada is an enchantingly scenic backdrop too.

The Projectionist: Film Industry Collaboration
Maybe I’m biased, but I love Kemey Lafond‘s art direction for this silent film.
About The Projectionist:
Students from five cohorts of UAL courses came together to work with acclaimed film director Jamie Thraves to produce a 16mm film produced in collaboration with the British Film Institute as part of their The Genius of Hitchcock season.
The film is loosely based on a story about the only missing or ‘lost’ film of Hitchcock’s 57 films, The Mountain Eagle (1926). The film is made by students from London College of Communication from Film, Sound and Television courses, and recent alumni from those courses.

Memory Marathon at the Serpentine Gallery This Weekend
As I mentioned yesterday, I spent the earlier part of this week having an art fuelled staycation in the heart of London, participating in Le Méridien Piccadilly‘s blogger thingy centred around this year’s Frieze Art Fair. I had a blast, saw a lot of amazing art, got to know the Le Méridien brand fairly well and learned about the hotel’s commitment to the arts and support of the Outset/Frieze Art Fair Fund to Benefit the Tate Collection.
First up on my Méridien art itinerary was an early morning visit to the Serpentine Gallery for a guided tour of the Thomas Schütte: Faces & Figures exhibition. The show runs until 18 November and is certainly worth your time … as well as its own stand alone blog post – stay tuned!
A gorgeous, sunny autumn day, the visit to this Hyde Park gallery provided a fantastic opportunity to simply sit in the sun and take in the restful atmo of the Herzog & de Meuron with Ai Weiwei pavilion one last time (it will close on Sunday).
While at the Serpentine, I caught wind of what’s coming up this weekend to mark the closing of the pavilion: the Memory Marathon. With decent weather forecasted for today and tomorrow, the Schütte exhibition and a full-on program of events featuring big name peeps like Michael Stipe and David Lynch along with neuro-scientists, robotics engineers, a scent expert and such putting on their arty pants and doing their thing in “a glowing, geodesic dome”, this seventh annual “festival of ideas” should be a hoot.
Inspired by the annual Pavilion commission, the multi-disciplinary event offers a “continuous, performative programme of explorations, musical and theatrical performances, film screenings, discussions and experiments” starting this evening, Friday 12 October. More:

Le Méridien at Frieze 2012
I just got back to my flat from a bit of an artsy fartsy staycation here in London. Spending the past few nights at Le Méridien Piccadilly as a participant in the hotel’s blogger outreach initiative, I was wined, dined and zipped across the London art world in grand style. At the best of times I was having a blast while mingling with inspired and inspiring folks from all walks of life talking about art, travel and all the sorts of things that make living in London so much fun. During other moments, I felt as if I’d been wedged into a scene from Zoolander. Either way, it was a winning situation for a fly on the wall dude like me.
I intend to write a whole lot more about my “Le Méridien at Frieze” experience but wanted to get one quick post up on the blog while everything was still fresh on my mind and while I was still able to offer my opinions of Frieze as a relevant preview.
Though I hardly had time to take in everything (and I still haven’t managed to check out the new Frieze Masters yet), I came away thinking this year’s fair had a lot more going for it than 2011. Stuff I liked a lot includes the following:

Jean Dubuffet, Waddington Custot Galleries (G12), London, waddingtoncustot.com

Martin Eder, Galerie Eigen + Art, Leipzig/Berlin (G4), eigen-art.com

Jayson Musson, Salon 94 (B14), New York, salon94.com

Xavier Antin, Galerie Crèvecœur (R13), Paris, galeriecrevecoeur.com

Aurel Schmidt, Pace (G8), London/New York/Beijing, pacegallery.com
And that’s just a few select highlights from Frieze. I also checked out the Thomas Schütte: Faces & Figures exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery as well as the Pre-Raphaelites show and the Turner Prize nominees exhibition at Tate Britain and the newly opened William Klein + Daido Moriyama exhibition at Tate modern. I enjoyed a gin infused afternoon tea, slept like a champ in an extremely comfortable bed, loved my stay at Le Méridien … and plenty more. Hang in there with me for the next week or so as my goal is to brag about getting to have all this fun and to let you know how you can too.
About Le Méridien’s connection to Frieze
Le Méridien is celebrating five years as the principle partner of Outset Contemporary Art Fund. As part of this partnership, the hotel group supports OFT (the Outset/Frieze Art Fair Fund to Benefit the Tate Collection) – a unique partnership between Frieze Art Fair and Tate, which enables Tate to buy work by emerging artists at Frieze.
