Time Flies/To-Do List Looms
Summer. Seems so long ago.
I moved flat back at the end of August. Months down the road, I’m feeling settled in and cosy – really loving the new home and confident I made the right decision. I know where I like to shop … grab a beer … get a cheap lunch. I have a good understanding of the local transport and how to get around my new part of town. With respect to all my day-to-day living, I reckon I’m done or pretty much there.
But when I stop and think about it, there’s an avalanche of a to-do list looming over my head. Do you have a GP in London? I still need to find one nearby. And then there’s that great painting that’s yet to have been hung. Not to mention … see what I mean?
Considering things this way, summer seems like only yesterday. It’s already 2012? February? Huh? Time flies when you’re having fun, I suppose.
Oh, I’m sure I’ll be okay. I’ve made it this far anyway 😉
When I plan out and sync up my daily routine with a well thought out schedule and stick to it, it’s amazing what I can accomplish. I’m ready to do some amazing things and leave the overwhelmed feeling behind.
It’s time to shake off the February doldrums and line things up for a fantastic spring.

Miami’s Thriving and Vibrant Wynwood Art District (CheapOair)
Miami’s Thriving and Vibrant Wynwood Art District
CheapOair, February 14, 2012

The Wynwood Arts District is the epicenter of contemporary art for the Greater Miami area, arguably all of Florida and, at the moment anyway, one of the fickle art world’s most celebrated destinations for contemporary art. Once a best avoided eyesore of derelict factories and disused warehouses, today this hip area hosts more than 50 art galleries, four museums and major collections along with dozens upon dozens of artist studios. The district fits snug between I-95 and Biscayne Boulevard from 20th to 36th street, south of Miami’s Design District.

What’s for Lunch? Comptoir Libanais, South Kensington (Londonist)
What’s for Lunch? Comptoir Libanais, South Kensington
Londonist, February 14, 2012 at 11:30 pm
A vivid feast for the eyes as much as (or maybe even just a little bit more than) for the taste buds, this Middle Eastern restaurant serves traditional Lebanese grilled dishes, mezze platters, wraps and tagines in a stylized Lebanese market setting with lots of Middle Eastern nicknacks and goodies for sale. The third Comptoir in a trio of this London-based chain, the South Ken branch is an ever buzzing eatery in an equally bustling part of town.

Olympic Record Breaking Summer for Heathrow Airport Expected (CheapOair)
Olympic Record Breaking Summer for Heathrow Airport Expected
CheapOair, February 09, 2012
It looks like this summer’s going to be a busy one at London’s Heathrow Airport. An estimated 80% of all visitors with flights to London for the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games are expected to pass through the airport. That’s almost 60,000 passengers including 12,850 athletes and 14,700 accredited media as well as marketing partners, officials and – of course – the spectators. To ensure that these visitors’ first experience of London and the UK before the Olympics will be a positive one, the British Airports Authority (BAA) is upping its game to deal with the high volume of flyers.

What’s for Lunch? Peppers & Spice, Dalston Junction

No matter the time of day, there seems always to be a queue at this takeaway – something that can’t really be said about the other Caribbean eateries nearby nor of Peppers & Spice’s closest lunchtime competitors. Not ones to miss out on a good queue, Londonist decided to investigate and see if Peppers & Spice is worth the wait.

Good Stuff
Quiet evening in … and a chance to publish another post in my Good Stuff series – essentially just quick lists of things I’ve come across lately and have really enjoyed but for whatever reason they didn’t make it into their own blog posts on here, my tikichris-to-go Tumblr blog or one of my client blogs.
A Nation of Shopkeepers: I had a tough time finding decent places to eat while up in Leeds. You can do well for a satisfying and cheap lunch – and it must be noted the city has some fantastic bars and pubs – but having a proper supper has proven difficult time and time again for me when I’m up there. Thankfully, I was introduced to A Nation of Shopkeepers during my last visit. Good food (kinda pub grub meets American comfort), great beer, affordable prices and a cool vibe. Apparently, it’s a highly regarded venue for live music as well.
Ferran Adrià: I attended an In Conversation event on “the art of cooking” at Whitechapel Gallery featuring photographer Hannah Collins and Ferran Adrià of ElBulli restaurant fame. The convo marked the launch of Collins’ publication The Fragile Feast: Routes to Routes to Ferran Adrià. Honestly, from what I could tell, the book and Collins’ photos really don’t do it for me. However, getting to listen to Adrià expound on all sorts of foodie related topics was brilliant. The dude seems to have a healthy perspective about his career, cooking and life in general. I’d love to try some of his food some time (there may still be a chance in the near future despite elBulli being closed).
The Artist: Saw it, loved it and wouldn’t be against watching it again. Really enjoyable and refreshing. Jean Dujardin + Bérénice Bejo, on screen magic.
Leong’s Legend: The Chinese New Year celebrations in Chinatown were a blast! The parade was vibrant and most impressive was the cacophonous entry of the dragon into Leong’s Legend (one of my favourite restos in Chinatown) to receive its offering while I was having a dumpling-licious lunch. Fun.
Forbidden Planet: Oh man … had a total geek out last weekend at this “cult entertainment megastore” and ended up leaving with considerably less quid in my pocket than when I’d entered. Brought home the Dungeons & Dragons complete series four disc box set. Remember that show? I loved it as a kid. And believe it or not it holds up pretty well all these years later and is still pretty entertaining (and better than most crap on TV nowadays anyway). Also grabbed a DVD of My Neighbor Totoro while there. It’s been too long since I last watched – and my girlfriend’s never seen it – egads! Must remedy this ASAP.
And oh yeah, it’s a snowy night here in my corner of London. Cosy and perfect for listening to Tommy Flanagan.

Roast, Conch and Enjoy at Hotel Chocolat’s New Shop (Great British Chefs)
Roast, Conch and Enjoy at Hotel Chocolat’s New Shop
Great British Chefs, February 04, 2012
Hotel Chocolat‘s Roast + Conch shop brings small batch chocolate making to the heart of London (4 Monmouth Street in Seven Dials, Covent Garden to be exact) where cocoa beans are delivered fresh from the company’s Rabot Estate plantation on Saint Lucia. Once in shop, the beans are converted daily into a range of rare chocolate batches in an open basement kitchen where customers are free to ogle. The results? A process-driven focus on the UK’s favourite treat that’s attractive, enlightening and delish.

New Restaurant Review: Léon de Bruxelles, Cambridge Circus
Londonist, February 2, 2012 at 12.3o pm
Moules frites mega chain with humble Brussels roots and a massive presence in France (not quite to the extent of, say, Pizza Express here in the UK but that’s a pretty good analogy), Léon de Bruxelles takes a leap across La Manche to have a go at British (and presumably Euro tourist and expat) punters with a new Soho restaurant.
