New BBQ Menu at St Bart’s Brewery
St Bart’s Brewery has launched a meaty new “barbecue soul food” menu (not such a bad idea for a pub situated across the street from Smithfield Market). Cocktails and Pizza at Clerkenwell & Social
The food just seemed to be a sidekick for the far more inspired (and inspiring) drinks. Cocktails like the Breaking Good (Pisco infused with chilli, lime juice, tarragon syrup, homemade bitters and egg white) and Beer New World (pale ale with amaretto and Bourbon shaken with honey, lemon juice and orange bitters) took me off guard with their presentation and intriguing flavour. And at £8.95 each I thought they are were rather good value for a fun Zone 1 outing. Continue reading

Ask for Janice
This casual bar and restaurant is a welcome addition to the cluster of food and drink options around Smithfield Market. I loved sipping my Beast of Bourbon cocktail (Woodford Reserve, sweet vermouth, crème de mure, £9). The stout salt squid (£8) was pretty yummy too as was most everything else I nibbled. I wasn’t too sure about my grenadine-y seasonal pickles (£3) though. Continue reading

Lunch at The Angel, City Road/Old Street
A few years ago I used to live just down the road from The Angel. Back then, like so many other things hovering near Old Street Roundabout, the pub was a very different place to what it is now. Following a major sprucing up, the once scruffy old boozer has reopened as a really rather clean and cosy place to have a drink.
