Just a Bit about Alicante

Alicante, Camping La Marina, La Marina (Comunidad Valenciana)

Thinking about heading down to Alicante for some guaranteed sunshine en espanol? Probably best to do a bit of online research for cheap flights to Alicante, things to do while there and how to make the most of your trip. For honest takes on holiday experiences and stuff to do in Alicante, you can’t beat Qype (Europe’s most popular user generated review site) and the ever reliable TripAdvisor. One of my favourite online travel resources, Lastminute.com, has plenty of listings for Alicante as well. A handy little blog that I’ve just come across, called Alicante City Blog, offers lots of great tips as well.

However you may like to plan your trips, with its Mediterranean climate, year round festivals, history and world class beaches, you’ll find it difficult not to have fun in Alicante.

Preparing to speak tonight at the British Museum about Renaissance art in Italy, celebrated restauranteur Antonio Carluccio was keen to share with Londonist – via a phone conversation this morning – his thoughts about art, the success behind his eponymous chain of restaurants as well as a bit about Italy, women and a whole lot about his love for his favourite city – London!

Where to Stay in Dubai?

Cruising Jumeirah beach shoreline

As mentioned about a week ago, I’ve got this fanciful idea swimming around in my head of possibly visiting Dubai sometime the near future to have a look see at some art. The best times to go are apparently October to March; so, there’s still time for me to consider the whens and hows of the trip.

With a few other trips already lined up for summer and fall and plans to visit the States at Christmas, the potential Emirates jaunt is definitely one for the back burner, but I have kept looking … just tinkering around on the internet for deals and such. I’m fascinated by the range of hotels there – from the ridiculously mega-swank to the totally economical. A few of the more interesting Dubai hotel options, should I decide to go, include the following:

Burj Al Arab (pictured above), the world’s only seven star hotel. It also boasts the world’s largest lobby atrium (which given this is the largest hotel in the world, makes perfect sense) replete with its own two story aquarium, airport shuttle service via Rolls Royce, BMW or helicopter etc etc etc. Reckoned by many as the iconic landmark of Dubai, it’s one for those that like their accommodation with a heaving dose of excess.

Considerably less dear (and with a mere five stars – just writing about the Burj Al Arab leaves me feeling posher!) but nonetheless highly recommended on a number of travel sites for its amenities, service, food and location is Le Royal Meridien Beach Resort and Spa. On the Jumeirah coast and just a short distance from the Dubai Marina, it has its own Water Sport Centre for kayaking, sailing, windsurfing, and deep-sea fishing as well as state-of-the-art spa and health clubs (yes, that’s clubs as in more than one) for post sport winding down.

For a much more budget conscious visit, there’s the Rush Inn. Situated near the Dubai International Exhibition Centre with souks, the famous Meena Bazaar and more nearby. And with rates potentially as low as $40 per night, a stay here might even allow shoestring tourists (as I suspect I’d be if I went) to indulge in a bit of shopping and sightseeing.

So there ya have it. Whether super rich or living out of a rucksack, there appears to be a room for pretty much any travellers’ needs.

Disney Kid/Tiki Kid

One of the most enjoyably memorable experiences of my life occurred when I was but a tike. Much about the adventures I had as a four year old kid on a family vacation to Disney World in Orlando, Florida remains as crystal clear in my mind as events that happened last week. The ride into the park on the Monorail, Adventureland, the Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse – everything there blew my little boy mind in a big way! In particular, the Haunted Mansion scared the living daylights out of me as nothing has since – I loved it! And as the name of this blog might suggest, the Enchanted Tiki Room made a most lasting impression!

Back then, a trip to Florida meant Mom and Dad waking my sis and me in the middle of the night for a several hours drive from our north Georgia home. These days living on the other side of the Atlantic, I’m happy to report there are plenty of cheap flights to Orlando and elsewhere in Florida. I could do with a sunny dose of orange-flavoured, mouse-eared kitsch right about now. Who’s up for some Mickey Mouse action in FLA?

Home draught brings draught beer home (Locally Sourced)

Home draught brings draught beer home
Locally Sourced, 24 June 2010

For anyone who’s never worked behind a bar, getting the hang of the home draught might take some getting used to and could result in the sort of mess that makes you wish you had a live-in bar back to clean up behind. Still for just £14 – 17, Home Draught offers the potential of enjoying fresh beer with a proper pub feel – in the private comforts of one’s own home.

The Black Pyramids of Tenerife

So when I overheard my buddy Giacomo (the fancy dress funster behind Bring Stuff events) talking about Tenerife, Thor Heyerdahl and pyramids the other day, I immediately butted in. According to Giac, the Canaries Island of Tenerife is home to the Pyramids of Güímar, funky rectangular pyramid-shaped, terraced structures built from lava stone without the use of mortar.

Image from piramidesdeguimar.net

Once back home, I hit Google and Wikipedia for info and even looked into some cheap flights to Tenerife. Yeah, the Pyramids of Güímar are for real (not that I ever doubted my friend). Who knew? Well, obviously Giacomo and lots of other people too. I guess better questions would be why didn’t I know about them and why haven’t I been there yet!

One of my heroes, Thor Heyerdahl of Kon-Tiki fame, was certainly hip to the pyramids. In 1991, he studied them and came to the conclusion that they were built with special astronomical orientation by ancient sun worshipers. However, it should be noted that others in the scientific community believe the pyramids only date to the 19th century and were used for agricultural purposes. Whatever the case, there’s still plenty of mystery surrounding the pyramids and that’s as good an excuse as any (there’s even a permanent Thor Heyerdahl exhibition onsite) to visit sunny Tenerife.

Joining the team at Tamarind as a sous chef in 2001, a year later he landed the position of Executive Chef at this celebrated Indian restaurant in Mayfair. In our latest Chefspective interview, we take the opportunity to not only pick Alfred’s brain for foodie tips but try to glean a little off him about how to be successful. The Third Line: Contemporary Middle Eastern Art in Dubai and Doha

Farhad Moshiri - from his Fluffy Friends series - The Third Line (Dubai, Doha)

Cutesy and massive mosaics of sweet lil baby tiger cubs, kittens and ducklings. Probably not what you’d expect to see at one of the world’s biggest and most prestigious art fairs. But Farhad Moshiri’s gigantic and kitsch works were just what contemporary Middle Eastern art gallery, The Third Line, opted to display at last year’s Frieze Art Fair here in London. I had lots of favourites meandering round the 09 Frieze. And with a 2010 press accreditation recently landing in my inbox, I’ve been remembering how much I enjoyed last year’s event. Moshiri’s pieces were especially memorable.  By injecting a welcome dose of low brow kitsch into the mix of otherwise haughty and high brow artsy fartsy pieces of art, he and The Third Line ensured the fair wouldn’t be taken too seriously.

Since the fair, I’ve been keeping a watchful eye on The Third Line’s website and have even looked into the possibility of booking some cheap flights to Dubai and Dubai hotel options to check out an exhibition or two at their Dubai and Doha locations. With all that Dubai offers (the tallest building in the world, the world’s only seven star hotel … there are even three Trader Vic’s!), it seems like the sort of place that I need to visit at least once in my life. And if The Third Line is any indication of what the art scene’s like, well, I have a feeling there’d be plenty of phenomenal art for me to take a gander at.

Team Hawaiian Pizza: Trader Vic's!

From Covent Garden to Mayfair, Qypers scoured, mocked and gawked at some of London’s weirdest food products in last night’s Mobile Photo Foodie Hunt hosted by ‘my kind of phone’, a Windows Phone UK initiative. Check out all the photos here on Flickr … Of course it wasn’t all ickily bizarre inedibles. Along the way there was filling and delicious free pizza offered by Adagio Pizza al Taglio (at their Greek Street and new Wardour Street locations!) with plenty of tasty cocktails and tidbits (ribs!) awaiting us in the Polynesian splendour of Trader Vic’s! Killer prizes a la my kind of phone and lots of laughs as we viewed our mobile shots from the hunt rounded out an excellent evening of extraordinary summer fun.

Wine of the Month: 2008 Macon Bussieres, Le Monsard Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon

Wine of the Month: 2008 Macon Bussieres, Le Monsard Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon

Tough times deserve great wine. Now, by no means am I suggesting anyone try to drink his or her problems away or seek solutions at the bottom of a bottle, but a good glass of wine can go a long way when having a sit down to make some long term life decisions. And on a hot summer’s day of heavy duty decision making, a crisp glass of 2008 Macon Bussieres, Le Monsard Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon should do the trick quite nicely. About half the folks I know (including yours truly) are going through some sort of major change these days. Here’s to us!

At £20.40 per bottle (or £18.35 per unsplit orders of 12), June’s WOTM isn’t as much of a ‘cheap bin’ pick as most of my past selections. Still, this organic and biodynamic Chardonnay is tasty value for money. Dry, light and ready to drink now (but should keep), it’s an ideal match for mid summer contemplations.

Of course, not everybody out there’s down in the dumps. Got a BBQ or celebration lined up? A bottle of chilled 2008 Macon Bussieres, Le Monsard Les Heritiers du Comte Lafon should complement any sunshiny plans you may have. It’s refreshing and one of the best warm weather quaffs I’ve come across in a long while.

Cheers … and cheer up!
