With four locations in London, Canteen provides Londoners with “simple British food” in tastefully casual settings. Chef Patron Cass Titcomb has been with the small chain from its 2005 start. After a recently and terribly filling lunch (we loved the roast chicken) at Canteen’s comfortable and spacious Baker St restaurant, we decided to find out more from Cass about the guiding principles behind the restaurants’ success as well as a little about his life as a chef.

Tiki Today Exhibition at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre

I’ve got a few photographs (as well as the following video which features burlesque dancer Trixie Malicious) in the Tiki Today exhibition at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre in Scunthorpe, England. Keep reading below for details about the show.

Tiki Today
27 March to 19 June 2010
20-21 Visual Arts Centre
Church Square
Scunthorpe
South Humberside DN15

The myths and legends of the Polynesian Islands of the Pacific provided the inspiration for the original tiki movement, which first gained popularity in California from the mid 1930s. After losing popularity in the 1960s it has recently seen a revival in the last decade as a new generation of artists, sculptors and modern day treasure hunters have sought to create a splash of exotic magic to everyday realities.

This exhibtion marks the first show of contemporary tiki art in a public gallery in the UK and features reknowned ‘Britiki’ artists such as Tikiracer, Tiki Chris and Los Furias Tiki and work by famous lowbrow American artists Sam Gambino and Derek Yaniger amongst others. The show features large-scale sculptures, paintings, mugs, jewellery, photography, ukeleles and rare gems from priviate tiki collections including items from the movements heyday which provided inspiration to artists and makers today.

Find out more at the 20-21 Visual Arts Centre’s Facebook page.

Covent Garden Canvas Photography Project

Carousel

Covent Garden Canvas is a photography initiative to celebrate Convent Garden’s 180th anniversary. I’m not quite sure which 180 year old milestone is being commemorated (I thought the origins of the market went back to the 13th century with its famed Piazza dating to the relatively more recent 1600s), but – hey – any excuse for some shutter bug fun is a good one, right?

Here you can dine on exquisite and locally foraged garlic, sorrels, nettles, dandelions and edible flowers. At home with the Viking sheep (Locally Sourced)

At home with the Viking sheep
Locally Sourced –  Food Network blog, 04 May 2010

DSC_7426

Located in the gently rolling countryside of Wiltshire, Langley Chase Organic Farm is the pastoral home to an award winning flock of Manx Loaghtan sheep. The Manx Loaghtan (pronounced ‘Manx Lockton’) is a multi-horned primitive rare breed that was first introduced to the British Isles by Vikings during the Iron Age. This ancient species is especially hearty and, given a life beyond the strict timetables of commercial farming, matures slowly and on its own without much need for human intervention.

Qype does London, May 4th 2010

Next time you’re out at one of your favourite local curry houses (and if you live anywhere near Streatham, your top choice should definitely be Chilli Chutney!) and you fancy ordering some samosas to start off your meal, consider for a moment how much effort actually goes into making those perfectly triangular parcels of deliciousness. If the restaurant’s worth its garam masala, they’re certain to make their samosas in house … for which they should be commended! As we Qypers attending last week’s Samosa Making Worshop at Chilli Chutney found out, a good bit of skill and more elbow grease than you might think goes into the creation of these humble subcontinent treats.

Wine of the Month: 2007 Berry Bros & Rudd’s 2007 Extra Ordinary White

Berry Bros & Rudd's 2007 Extra Ordinary White

This month’s choice brings a taste of zest to the palate and is sipped with earnest hopes for a lovely summer. Indeed, with its light and lemony finish, Berry Bros & Rudd’s 2007 Extra Ordinary White is a winner of a warm weather wine.

With hints of almond and tropical fruits, it seems like a perfect quaff for pairing with grilled or roasted chicken as well as spicy Indian and Southeast Asian dishes. It wouldn’t be a bad one to serve chilled during a picnic either. I certainly wouldn’t mind a glass or two of this Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon blend while dining (or just nibbling) al fresco.

Medium-full bodied and dry, this affordable and no nonsense white is guaranteed to please. Pick up a bottle for £11.50 (or £10.35 for unsplit orders of 12). As for those hopes for a lovely summer … well … with the bank holiday weekend about to make a soggy turn for the worse here in London, all bets are off!

For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

Palm Court at The Langham Hotel Awarded Top London Afternoon Tea

Perhaps it’s only fitting that the place to first commercially offer afternoon tea in London should now be recognized as having the best in town. Serving London socialites and fancy pants hotel guests since 1865 (when this newly found tradition of mid afternoon social snacking cost a mere 7p), the Palm Court at The Langham has been awarded the Tea Guild’s Top London Afternoon Tea award for 2010 and thus joins the swank ranks of 25 years of previous winners which include Brown’s Hotel, The Lanesborough, Claridges, The Ritz and The Dorchester.

Shoreditch House has recently launched Shoreditch Rooms, bringing 26 bedrooms to the East End’s glam private members club (we actually bumped into a minor TV sleb in the lift during our visit this afternoon). Only open a few weeks, rooms are already booked solid. Sharing the same Ebor Street entrance as the club and available in “Tiny, Small and Small+” sizes to members as well as non-member riffraff, rooms range in price from £75-195/night (£60-175 for members).

Britain’s Oldest Indian Restaurant Veeraswamy Brings Back the Darwan (Londonist)

DSC_9091

Established in 1926, Veeraswamy is Britain’s oldest Indian restaurant, one of London’s oldest surviving restaurants and possibly one of its most lauded. Indeed, National Geographic reckons Veeraswamy is among the ten best “destination and special restaurants” in the world. Still owned by the same family (the folks behind the ubiquitous Masala World group) as when it opened, Veeraswamy is somewhat of a bastion of fine dining tradition.

Bringing back one of its original subcontinent ploys for impressing visitors and drawing walk-in customers, the restaurant recently reintroduced the services of a Darwan, an “imposing gentleman with a turban” doorman to greet guests upon entry. Londonist swung by yesterday evening to say hi to the Darwan (the third to fill the fancy dress position since the role was started back up late last year). He seemed like an affable chap and was most keen to ensure that we – and all guests – were initially received with a smile as he ushered us inside for a quick chat. According to him, the restaurant opened the 21st of April, 1926 (the same day as Her Majesty was born). In celebration of 85 years in the resto biz, the peeps calling the shots thought it might be fun to add a bit of old school hospitality to the Veeraswamy experience.

While there (and since we were offered) Londonist headed up to Veerasmay’s comfortable and gracious first floor dining room to sample some of its dishes. If you’ve got the cash, love Indian cuisine and fancy a superb view over Regent Street, we suggest you do the same. Highlights included a starter course of irresistibly crisp green leaf and okra bhajias (whole okra and leaves of fenugreek, ruby chard and mint coated in a light rice flour batter, £9) with a particularly creamy coriander and mint sauce and a tangy tamarind chutney with pomegranate seeds. A main course of Sholay chicken tikka smoked with garam masala (£9 as a starter, £18 as a main) yielded some of the most tender chicken we’ve eaten to date. Charred just so and with a bit of kick, we’d be pleased to choose that dish again. A side of fresh pineapple curry (pineapple, curry, mustard and green chilli, £9) was perhaps the most unusually savoury sensation we’ve experienced this year. Highly recommendable, we’d go back for it alone. A couple of flaky on the outside/fluffy on the inside pieces of layered naam (£3.35) was delectable, while kaala jaam (large black gulab jamun with vanilla ice cream, £6.75) for puds ended our dinner on a moreish note.

As we left, our Darwan was pleased to find we had enjoyed our meal. We wondered if he enjoyed his doorman with a funny costume gig and if he thought it was a good job. “It’s not about how hard or easy a job is” he explained, “it’s about having fun.” Is the Veeraswamy reintroduction of the Darwan a colonial kitsch rehash or is it a fun and turbaned tip to tradition? Slide by Veeraswamy at Victory House, 99 Regent Street (entrance in Swallow Street) from 6pm to see for yourself.

For more information about Veeraswamy visit veeraswamy.com.

Rowley’s Entrecote Steak at Mandeville Hotel’s deVille Restaurant (Londonist)

Rowley’s Entrecote Steak at Mandeville Hotel’s deVille Restaurant
Londonist, April 27, 2010 11:30 AM

DSC_9085

It’s become deliciously difficult for Londonist to pass through Marylebone without stumbling upon a slab of beef these days. From insurgent burgers to Parisian steak-frites phenoms, the area’s restaurant scene seems especially cow-centric as of late. Possibly taking a cue from those aforementioned steak-frites phenoms – along with enlisting an assist from a veritable Jermyn Street foodie institution – the swish deVille restaurant (at the equally snazzy Mandeville Hotel) has jumped on the Marylebone meat wagon recently by introducing Rowley Restaurant‘s “famous char-grilled” entrecote steak and frites to its already exceptionally tasty menu. With an especially rich butter and herb sauce and unlimited French fries or chunky chips, deVille’s entrecote feast is available in large (6oz for £19) and extra-large (10oz for £23) portions. Set above a burner to leave the butter sauce to sizzle, there’s a bit of theatre involved with the presentation of this succulently meaty menu insert.
