Always keen to keep our readers posted on decent eats situated well beyond the shadow of Lord Nelson’s Column, we replied with an anticipant ‘yes’ when invited down to Streatham to give Chilli Chutney‘s Lahori menu a thorough tasting.

A sherry bar in London? What a fino idea! And now it’s a reality. Opening today in that same secret courtyard as Spanish restaurant Camino (indeed, they share the same owner), Bar Pepito is a tiny place with a hefty list of 15 sherries, a delectable smattering of tapas and a rustic atmosphere that’ll make you forget you’re mere steps from King’s Cross.

Earlier this week, I was invited by Best Buy (yep, the US mega-chain retailer of electronics is to wash up on these shores) to attend the launch of Canon’s new PowerShot SX210 IS at Mercedes-Benz World in Weybridge for a day of camera play and gawking at sleek automobiles. Got all that? Good.

Discovering, Cooking and Tasting Vietnamese Cuisine with Pho (Qype does London)

Discovering, Cooking and Tasting Vietnamese Cuisine with Pho
Qype does London, March 17th 2010

DSC_6856

Qype recently threw a friendly little food blogger get together at PhoGreat Titchfield Street’s friendly neighbourhood Vietnamese soup shack (and a stylish and popular shack at that!). I’d never been to this location but have long been a fan of Pho’s St John Street restaurant. In fact, I go there all the time and have found it to be one of the most consistently enjoyable restaurants in Clerkenwell. So, I was happy to see (and to taste!) that this more centrally situated venue lives up to the same high standards. For more westerly diners, please note that Pho also has a spot at Westfield (we hear they’re opening in Brighton soon and maybe even Soho too!).

Held at Lindley Hall with plenty of appreciated sunshine streaming through the Edwardian building’s large glass roof, yesterday’s annual trade-only California Wine Tasting presented 200 some odd wineries for the consideration of the UK market. With glass in hand, Londonist gave the event a proper sniff and walked away with a few sun kissed faves.

New Restaurant Review: Aqua Nueva (Londonist)

New Restaurant Review: Aqua Nueva
Londonist, March 15, 2010 3:00 PM

For the most part, Nueva‘s menu impresses. On our visit, we started with an eloquently constructed huevo pochado con migas de pastor y consomé (poached egg with pancetta, paprika-fried breadcrumbs and beef consommé) which set our expectations for the rest of the meal scrumptiously high. A main course of presa parrilla con chimichurri (roast Iberian neck of pork marinated with chimchurri) competently met the standard set by those fine tasting migas. Other dishes, such as a refined tapa serving of morcilla and the oxtail main, were certainly edible but didn’t come nearly as close to overwhelming us. However, we absolutely adored our bottle of 2006 Emilio Moro Ribera del Duero and found Nueva’s Spanish-led wine list a compelling read. Too stuffed for dessert, Londonist nevertheless had room to knock back a glass of sherry and were pleased indeed to end such a lovely meal with a syrupy quaff of Alvear Montilla.

… for a bit of intrigue, consider the 2008 Hermitage Blanc from Domaine Marc Sorrel. Still “lying abroad” and to be shipped later in 2010 (with an in bond case price of £360), this stringent and somewhat mustard-like white yielded the most interesting quaff from either event.

Old Town Bar, New York

In a recent post about New York, I alluded all too briefly to a fantastic bar I visited for my first time while in town for Christmas. Thinking about it, Old Town deserves much more than a quickie mention! It really was one of the greatest bars I’ve ever saddled up to. Thus, I’ve added my review on Qype (ooh, I was the initial reviewer – cool beans!) and figured I should go ahead and spread a bit more love on my blog for this antiquated but still buzzin’ watering hole in Manhattan’s Flat Iron District.

What made my Old Town experience so fab wasn’t so much about the place, actually. I was there to meet up with a couple of dear friends (one I’ve known since high school and the other since university). We would have had a good time just about anywhere. Of course, setting up camp at Old Town’s gorgeous 55 foot long marble and mahogany bar was optimal for our rendezvous and most conducive to quality conversation. Music was killer (when we left they were playing the Replacements) but not too loud, and the beer flowed beautifully throughout the night. We went through more than a couple of rounds of Pauliner; a few of which were on the house – I think our attentive bartender could tell my friends and I hadn’t seen each other in a long time and was glad to oblige in making the most of our reunion. A juicy burger from the grill helped set my mood right too.

Open since 1892, there’s nothing trendy about Old Town. Indeed, what makes it so ideal are its original furnishings and décor, such as New York’s oldest dumbwaiter, the gigantic full-length urinals in the men’s room and the 16 foot high tin tiled ceiling. This is a well established no-nonsense watering hole and a true New York institution. During any future New York City breaks, I’ll do my darnedest to bee-line it to this superlatively aged joint of the New York drinking scene.

New Restaurant Review: Guerilla Burgers (Londonist)

New Restaurant Review: Guerilla Burgers
Londonist, March 2, 2010 12:00 PM

Guerilla Burgers' Cheddar BLT Burger

Guerilla Burgers‘ lengthy menu offers a compelling read. For any non-ivores, there are plenty of options including turkey, chicken and veggie burgers. We’re confident all their items fall between the so-so and the pretty damn good (with most landing squarely in the middle of that taste spectrum). Does the insurgent Guerilla Burgers bring a dining revolution to London? No. But it’s a fine place to grab a burger.

New Restaurant Review: Polpo

Cicchetti (Venetian Tapas) at Polpo

Undoubtedly, the atmosphere, warmth and buzz are the best things going for this northern Italian newcomer. Indeed, it’s wonderful to see cicchetti – Venice’s answer to the ever growing roster of world “tapas” – making an appearance in this low key Soho setting and being served by such friendly and competent staff.  At £20 a head for a sufficient number of plates, desserts and a couple of beers, Polpo‘s a good spot to keep in mind for casual outings with friends who like to share bites.

Saturday Breakfast Box. Featuring a meat fest melange of yummy morning favourites assembled by Sillfield Farm‘s Peter Gott, the Saturday Breakfast Box is available for Friday delivery in two sizes: one that is suggested for two (but we reckon could feed four folks easily) and another for six people.
