Wine of the Month: 2006 Mâcon-Cruzille, Bret Brothers Paired with Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps

Wine of the Month: 2006 Mâcon-Cruzille, Bret Brothers

An on-again-off-again sunny Saturday afternoon here in London – still cold but with an ever so slight feel of spring in the air – presents a perfect time to sip February’s Wine of the Month. A crisp and honeysuckle-y white wine made with organically grown grapes in the clay-limestone soils of Burgundy, Bret Brothers 2006 Mâcon-Cruzille (£12.55/bottle or £11.30/unsplit orders of 12) is taking the edge off an especially busy (and rather stressful) week in a most deliciously effective way.

This complex and saffron-tasting wine is also providing me the chance to give Berry Bros & Rudd’s Wine and Music idea a go. So, I’m sipping along to one of my all-time favourite albums – Neil Young’s Rust Never Sleeps, (Spotify link here) – and finding it to be a most pleasant match. The floral and multilayered notes of the Mâcon-Cruzille delightfully accentuate the harmonica and acoustic guitar playing on songs like Sail Away while still holding up to rockers on the album such as Welfare Mothers (diiiiii-vooooor-ceeeee!) and Sedan Delivery. The nine-song set of classics that is Rust Never Sleeps has been pleasing my eardrums since I was a teen. I reckon I’ll still be enjoying the hell out of it for rest of my life. Like fine wine, Mr Young’s music ages well. As for the Mâcon-Cruzille, I wouldn’t be against it keeping me and Neil company and rockin’ my palate for years to come.

For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

Lastminute.com’s “Oh You Lucky Bloggers” List for February

I just came home from hosting a great Qype night out at Exhibit in Balham (much more on that to follow) to discover my blog made Lastminute.com’s top 50 list of blogs for February. Apparently the list is compiled by “tinkering” with Google page rank and a bunch of social media criteria. Neato.  As when I made Lastminute’s Top 10 London blogs, it’s good to see Londonist at the top of rankings! Killer stuff. Thanks Lastminute.com. Good night.

New York Reminiscing

DSC_4728

I don’t think I’ve managed to write anything about my time in New York and New Jersey over Christmas and New Years. Any bloggers reading this post should be able to sympathize with me. You know how it goes: work and other obligations demand so much time and the backlog of posts builds and builds with our poor little online labours of love suffering. Anyway, I had a brilliant time. It’s always good to see family and friends back in the States. As much as I love London, I miss living near the ocean on the Jersey Shore – and there’s nothing like New York for a healthy dose of urban buzz!

This time round I found that, despite having lived in New York and New Jersey, there’s still plenty for me to discover. I finally got around to having a drink (or five) at Old Town on East 18th Street in Manhattan. Open since 1892, this gorgeous bar was perfect for catching up with a couple of friends from high school and uni. I’m ashamed to admit I’d never gone before. That go-round certainly won’t be my last.

With the December visit as well as a long weekend jaunt for a Brooklyn wedding in September, my love for New York has only grown stronger. I was especially blown away by the High Line Park during that autumn wedding trip. Not sure when I’ll get the chance, but I feel some more New York holidays are definitely in order!

Mozzarella day (Locally Sourced)

Mozzarella day
Locally Sourced – Food Network blog, 26 February 2010

null

As generic as the term “mozzarella” may seem, what actually constitutes an authentic version of this milky white cheese is very precise. It must be made from the milk of water buffaloes and it must be produced in the southern Italian region of Campania. Mozzarellas that meet these specs bear the “Mozzarella di Bufala Campana” trademark. Because of the cheese’s unique geographic origins, Mozzarella di Bufala Campana has been granted Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) status by the European Union.

No longer simply a South London institution, Brixton’s foodie favoured pizzeria – Franco Manca – has opened a second branch in villagey Chiswick. And if our experience at last night’s launch party (the restaurant’s actually been open for about a month) is at all representative of what diners can expect, W4 residents and those inclined to travel a bit for quality nosh should rejoice!

Hey Police! Don’t Make Photographers the Enemy!

There’s been growing news and social media coverage over the past several months about a frightening trend occurring in the UK. People merely taking photographs in public are coming under pressure from police who suspect these photographers of using their images for antisocial and terrorist purposes. As a photographer, all the articles and anecdotes I’ve come across have concerned me considerably. The latest – a Guardian article about Bob Patemen, an amateur shutter bug in Lancashire – chilled me to an extent that’s left me wondering not if I might ever be the victim of such overt abuse of authority but when!

I highly recommend taking the time to check out writer Paul Lewis’s article Photographer films his own ‘anti-terror’ arrest. The piece is accompanied by video recordings by Mr Patemen of his encounters with the police who claimed the pictures he was taking constituted “antisocial behaviour”. It’s shocking. In the footage, Pateman appears to have been arrested for absolutely no reason at all. From what I can tell, he and his friend were only interested in trying out a new camera and shooting the “really nice atmosphere” of Christmas festivities in the town of Accrington.

Why must police waste their resources through the unjust treatment of photographers? Only last week, a shopkeeper in the town of Huddersfield (roughly 40 miles from Accrington) was murdered in his shop by four teenagers who got away with a small amount of cash, a few packs of cigarettes and some candy. Too bad there weren’t any police around … or any photographers to assist by photographing the incident as or right after it occurred.

For me, seeing that people are comfortable enough to whip out expensive photography gear in public means that an area is safe enough for everyone to go about their law abiding business. Rather than making innocent folks afraid to use their cameras in public settings, why isn’t law enforcement engaging avid photographers to help keep an eye out for things that are truly suspicious and out of the norm? If the police officers in Pateman’s video had simply struck up a friendly conversation with him, they might have discovered him to be a civic-minded local with good knowledge of his community. Should they ever have needed images of a particular crime scene or any other relevant shots, he may have proved to be a most receptive ally.

I make a few pence here and there as a professional photographer, but the vast majority of my photography falls under the category of amateur enthusiast. You can read why I love taking photos so much (especially here in London) in this Londonist Behind the Lens profile about me. It disturbs me to no end to think that an oppressive culture that singles out photographers (of all people!) has developed in this country. Never should anyone be made to feel as an enemy of the state for simply being keen to chronicle and celebrate life through the medium of photography.

But fans of street art (as well as photorealism) may already be familiar with his style. As one of four members of Germany’s near legendary Ma’claim crew, CASE has built quite a reputation by blending graffiti with fine art to a most dazzling effect.

In town for their Free Cone Day ice cream give away, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield (more popularly known as Ben & Jerry) took the opportunity to announce their commitment to go 100% Fairtrade. By 2012, every ingredient that goes into a Ben & Jerry’s product will be Fairtrade certified. Nice one.

Braving the seemingly weather impervious crowds queued up for free ice cream and entertainment, Londonist popped round Leicester Square this morning to get the scoop from this duo of ice cream aficionados. A long way from the hippie-humble beginnings as a Vermonter sole trader start-up, today Ben & Jerry’s Homemade Holdings, Inc is a division of the British-Dutch Unilever conglomerate. Still, despite the multi-national corporate trappings, these jolly and refreshingly straightforward buddies have a fun and good natured sense of perspective.
