Lunch Delivery Review: LunchBox (Londonist)
Lunch Delivery Review: LunchBox
Londonist, January 22, 2010 11:06 AM
Iceberg lettuce. It has its culinary place, we suppose, but certainly not as the main ingredient of a Caesar salad …especially when there’s no romaine lettuce, croutons or Parmesan included in that so called Caesar. Such a mislabelled bed of leafy greens was our introduction to the new lunch delivery biz, LunchBox. Based on a quick view of their website and press materials, our expectations weren’t high when they contacted us about sampling their lunches. Nevertheless, we were underwhelmed.

Wine of the Month: Berry Bros & Rudd’s 2007 Domaine de Coudoulet Viognier, Vin de Pays D’Oc
Upon first tasting, I didn’t quite know what to make of this one. I was immediately intrigued when I gave the cork and then my glassful a good whiff but then didn’t think my initial sip equalled my nosed expectations. Still, this Viognier grew on me with every taste. Besides, some of my favourite wines are cheap and white (just like me – ha!). At just £7.95 per bottle, this peachy little number definitely fits the bill, and until the end of this month, Berry’s got it priced at £5.95 per bottle when purchased in a case of 12.
For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

Hotels in Thailand
OneTravel, January 21, 2010
Travelling in Thailand offers an opportunity to indulge in the comforts of some of the world’s most stylish small hotels. Here’s a review of three equally lovely yet otherwise very different small boutique hotels: Bangkok’s discrete urban retreat Phranakorn Nornlen, the luxe and laid back Rest Detail Hotel, and the wedged between jungle and sea Tubaak Krabi Boutique Resort.

Bibendum Times Annual Wine Tasting 2010 (Londonist)
Bibendum Times Annual Wine Tasting 2010
Londonist, January 21, 2010 5:08 PM
Taking over Saatchi Gallery with two hundred winemakers showcasing more than a thousand wines, yesterday’s Bibendum Times Annual Tasting gave those in the vino biz and those wishing to write about such transactions a fantastic sample of what to expect at London’s better wine shops and restaurants in the next year or so. Sadly, Londonist didn’t have the time (or resolve) to taste every bottle offered. But we did our darnedest! Here’s a round up of our faves from the day …

Shoes with a View
The above ‘shoes with a view’ photo was taken during some splendidly mellow downtime on one of my best-est, most favourite-est days of 2009 (November 25th to be exact). It may sound silly but I had quite the epiphany lazily contemplating those clodhoppers. I’m not one to go ga-ga over any brand, but I’ve gotta hand it to that practical pair of Merrells.
The late November morning started off quite solemnly at dawn watching novice monks on their daily alms procession through the relaxed and lovely little UNESCO World Heritage town of Luang Prabang. After that, it was off to Elephant Village on the banks of the bucolic Nam Khan River for a day and a half of elephant trekking.
While lounging around after a filling lunch at Elephant Village’s main camp, I propped my feet up and took notice of my shoes, a pair of Merrells I’d purchased much earlier in the year. I realized they’d been the ideal footwear for just such a jungle-y, tropical adventure. I also remembered that a few months prior, my lightweight, breathable mesh Merrells had provided more than adequate support for my urban exploits in Lagos, Nigeria. After putting plenty of miles (not to mention lots of wear-n-tear) on these rubber soled puppies, I must admit that surprisingly they’re still in excellent condition. I reckon I can get another year or so out of ’em easy.
If you’re heading somewhere hot and humid and want to do more than merely mope about in flip flops, I highly recommend considering a pair of Merrell walking shoes.
After admiring my sturdy yet flexi-light shoes, I nodded off for an excellent midday snooze, saving up my energy for later when back atop my trusty new found pachyderm friend (along with an even more trusty elephant trainer) I trekking back into the forests of Laos (culminating the next day with some early morning bath time fun in the Nam Khan).

The High Line (of New York)
CheapOair, January 19, 2010
A stroll along the High Line offers a vantage point lofily removed but not isolated from the urban grit and daily grind of New York. Commanding views of the Hudson and much of the Manhattan skyline (not to mention Jersey City’s and Hoboken’s) and the birds eye perspective over many downtown streets make this unique public outdoor space an ideal setting for an afternoon session of photography. A must-see attraction in a city chocked full of unconventional and fascinating things-to-do, the High Line is a fun, free and refreshing way to experience Manhattan’s urban landscape and contemplate its evolution.

Restaurant Review: 108 Marylebone Lane (Londonist)
Restaurant Review: 108 Marylebone Lane
Londonist, January 19, 2010 12:49 PM
108 Marylebone Lane has been around for about a year but, with a recent refurb and a new chef, we thought now would be a good time to pop in for a review. We’re certainly glad we did. This tasteful restaurant, with its distinctive shop local philosophy (when possible 108 sources ingredients from nearby suppliers such as La Fromagerie, The Ginger Pig and Biggles Sausages) has much going for it – especially if you’re in the mood for splashing out.

Food Secret’s Detox Delivery (Londonist)
Food Secret’s Detox Delivery
Londonist, January 18, 2010 11:45 AM
Londonist spent Monday through Friday of last week having our breakfasts and lunches delivered to us by Food Secret. All meals came from the restaurant’s detox menu (a range of “nutritious but filling culinary offerings … full of essential vitamins, minerals and enzymes that will help eliminate stored toxins and support the body back to optimal health”). As for optimizing our health, Londonist seemed to have a bit more vim in our stride last week. Admittedly Food Secret’s selections were much healthier than our usual weekday nosh but, in most cases, were just as tasty.

Chinese Afternoon Tea at Royal China Club

For those inured to the delights of London’s more usual afternoon teas, here’s a fresh, oriental take on this ever so British tradition. And for those seeking to celebrate Chinese New Year, the Royal China Club’s afternoon tea might provide a purrrrfectly civilized and novel way to usher in the year of the tiger.

London Art Fair 2010
Londonist, January 12, 2010 4:23 PM
Now in its 22nd year, the London Art Fair at at the Business Design Centre near Angel Station opens to the public tomorrow and runs until Sunday the 17th. Certainly more subdued than the mega-show that was Frieze or even the Affordable Art Fair, this year’s London Art Fair is still nothing to LAF at. Indeed, a quick browse during this afternoon’s press preview, offered a few gems Londonist reckons are worth checking out.

Take Away Burrito Sampling at Canary Wharf’s Wahaca (Londonist)
Take Away Burrito Sampling at Canary Wharf’s Wahaca
Londonist, January 11, 2010 3:42 PM

Yesterday, Londonist waddled down to Wahaca’s Canary Wharf location (a newish restaurant we think rather highly of) for a session of proto-burrito sampling with a friendly crew of bloggers (did you know there’s a blog dedicated solely to reviewing London’s burrito scene?). Invited by the owners of this ridiculously popular Mexican eatery (it was absolutely jamming for a Sunday afternoon), we were glad to provide feedback about Wahaca’s upcoming range of take-away burritos.
