The Elastic Concept of Libraries in Laos (PSFK)

The Elastic Concept of Libraries in Laos
PSFK, December 10, 2009

@My Library

As one of the world’s poorest countries with the sad distinction – and lingering dangers – of also being the
most heavily bombed country in the world, simply checking out a book from one’s local library in Laos isn’t as straightforward a process as in more prosperous and secure nations. In this mountainous and vastly rural backwater of merely a few million people, many Lao villages are in fact so remote they can only be accessed by boat. Still, the concept of making books other essential tools for learning and documenting readily accessible via libraries is of utmost importance to tiny landlocked Laos. Here’s a look at two non-profit organizations, The Language Project and Community Learning International, and their good work helping shape a brighter future for the people of Laos through the creation of libraries uniquely geared towards the needs of their end users.

Bring the In-N-Out to London!

Here’s a link to Chris Pople’s The In’N’Out campaign post on his Cheese and Biscuits blog. Chris was recently in sunny San Diego, California where he apparently (and most understandably) fell in love with “genuine American burger” restaurant, In-N-Out. So much so, he’s keen to see this fast food phenom cross the Pond and sling burgers here in London.  As a big fan of In-N-Out’s “freshest quality” policy and decent employer practices, I’m all for an In-N-Out London franchise! Good luck Mr Pople!

The In’N’Out campaign
Cheese and Biscuits, Thursday, 10 December 2009

I won’t go on again about how good In’N’Out are – read my San Diego roundup if you need a reminder – but briefly, the fact they can serve such thoroughly accomplished burgers for $1.99 is little short of a miracle. Now obviously, if In’N’Out were to open a branch in London, that price point may be an issue, but at £1.99 or even £2.99 you’ll still be putting the fear of God not only into the gourmet gang but clearly also into Burger King and McDonalds too.

Review: The Most Travelled Correspondent – A Retrospective of George Rodger (Londonist)

Review: The Most Travelled Correspondent – A Retrospective of George Rodger
Londonist, December 10, 2009 11:56 AM

DNGR033

Of another era, when itineraries were banged out on typewriters or hand drawn with red grease pins on maps and a journo’s notes were pencilled in gorgeous Hermes notepads, The Most Travelled Correspondent: A Retrospective of George Rodger gives a cool Indiana Jones-y chance to see the world as it once was through the eyes of a masterful photographer. The exhibition is guaranteed to amaze and certain to provoke quality conversations.

Boutique Hotels in Thailand – The Difference is in the Design

DSC_2236

Small, stylish and unique, the beauty of boutique hotels is in the individual design of each accommodation. A recent week’s visit to Thailand offered the perfect opportunity to indulge in the comforts of three equally lovely yet otherwise very different boutique hotels: Bangkok’s discrete urban retreat Phranakorn Nornlen, the luxe and laid back Rest Detail Hotel, and the wedged between jungle and sea Tubaak Krabi Boutique Resort.

Phranakorn Nornlen, Bangkok

DSC_2236

Lost in time with oodles of kitsch appeal, Phranakorn Nornlen is a cheery little urban retreat on a sleepy residential side street in Bangkok. The downside? Good luck finding a cabbie or tuk tuk driver that knows the location! But, with the right attitude, that only added to to fun. The upside? The most deliciously refreshing smoothies in the world, super cheap rates and as friendly and helpful a staff as ever you’ll find. This is a brilliant hotel for stopovers or long term visits. The homey vibe and eye of the storm address made my stay in Bangkok an easy and mellow experience (the on sight Thai massages might have helped as well).

Rest Detail Hotel, Hua Hin

DSC_9823

Rest Detail Hotel is located outside of the resort town of Hua Hin. About a hundred miles or so south of Bangkok, popular retreat for weekenders and a fairly convent destination for anyone flying in/out of Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport. Hardly more than a year old, Rest Detail’s contemporary design (a tropical minimalist feel, large comfy furnishings, open gracious spaces) delights the senses. From kicking back in the infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Siam to enjoying the private sunrise views from one’s own bed or outdoor en suite whirlpool, rooms here are designed to pamper.

Tubaak Krabi Boutique Resort, Krabi

DSC_0033

With numerous cheap and short flights from Bangkok and the glorious feeling of leaving the problems of the world miles and miles behind, Krabi on southern Thailand’s dramatic west coast is a lush a pit stop for anyone in need of getting away from it all. Nestled between the jungle (a national park no less) and the Andaman Sea with an otherworldly view of a thirteen island archipelago, the quaint forty-two room Tubaak Krabi Boutique Resort is an exceptionally accommodating option for this evocative area. Built around the forest and sacrificing only those trees needed to be cut down, Tubaak Krabi has an enchantingly snug, forested, villagey feel. A list of accolades and awards for its design, the most wonderfully placed hammock, free access to sea kayaks and mountain bikes, top notch dining on the beach, giant en suite outdoor bathtubs and more all epitomize the restorative powers and thoughtful attention to detail at the heart of this resort.

Food and Drink Festival Review: Towards a Fluid State (Londonist)

Food and Drink Festival Review: Towards a Fluid State
Londonist, December 7, 2009 10:30 AM

DSC_2912

From its very first Narnia-esque moment of entering the rundown MC Motors frontage on a grubby Dalston side street to once inside being transported to an edgily buzzed playground of sensory delights, Saturday night’s Towards a Fluid State food and drink festival offered punters more than a clinical Taste of anything and rather an intoxicatingly ‘What if?’ atmosphere.

Patti Smith at Robert Maplethorpe: A Season in Hell (Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art)

Patti Smith at Robert Maplethorpe: A Season in Hell
Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art, December 2009

Mapplethorpe - A Season in Hell

The evening of Tuesday the 13th of October seemed as ordinary as any other end of day here in London. Perhaps a bit nippier than usual, but nothing suspect about a cool autumn night. In Fitzrovia, the urbane district just north of Oxford Street, the black cabs zipped along its warren of well trod streets at their usual pace. That is until they hit Berners Street, where a mass of (what seemed to be several hundred) ardent fans spilled and sprawled across the pavement in anticipation of a performance by Patti Smith at the Alison Jacques Gallery opening of Robert Mapplethorpe: A Season in Hell – a new interpretation of works by the acclaimed and oft scorned artist Robert Mapplethorpe, including rarely seen collages and (of course) photographs.

Perfect Paris Weekend with €1000 to Blow? Hmmm …

Paris Weekend July 2008

Okay! The good folks at We Are Social and Le Nouveau Paris just offered me a chance at a freebie trip to Paris if I could come up with a blog post about “your dream weekend in Paris … if you had €1000.” A dream weekend in Paris? Hmmm … that’s easy!

I’d go to one of my favourite museums (Musée du quai Branly with its phenomenal collection of indigenous art from Africa, Asia, Oceania and the Americas), dine at one of my favourite restaurants (La Fontaine de Mars, where I’ve actually eaten every time I’ve been to Paris – Obama likes it too!) and hang out as much as I could with one of my favourite Parisians (my French brother from another mother, the one and only Theramin playing Jimmy Virani). I wouldn’t mind revisiting l’Orangerie for more excellent art as well as Maison Berthillon for some of the best ice cream on earth!

Paris Weekend 2008

And I suppose such an excursion would provide the perfect opportunity to slide into the Bar Hemingway and sample its Ritz Side Car, which at €400 is generally beyond my budget.

I’d probably eat more than my fair share of crepes too and … of course … run around like a madman (most likely in the graffiti rich Marais) taking bucket loads of photos!

New Restaurant Review: Pizza East (Londonist)

New Restaurant Review: Pizza East
Londonist, December 4, 2009 11:46 AM

DSC_2569

A well rounded (if mostly Italian) wine list, adequate service and a snazzy vibe should be reason enough to poke one’s head in. Not sure it lives up to the hype (and the too sweet tomato sauce was truly a bummer) but Pizza East certainly has its merits.

Onwards to Laos (Qype does London)

Onwards to Laos
Qype does London, December 3rd 2009

DSC_0859

Much of Lao history is heartbreaking. Despite being a mountainous and vastly rural backwater of merely a few million people, Laos holds the sad record of being the most heavily bombed country in the world. What’s heart warming though is the Lao folks’ sense of resolve and how they welcome visitors with the kindest smiles that I personally have ever seen. For all the hardship and hazards, there’s a contentment there that’s alluring.  Perhaps, it’s the iridescent sunsets on the Mekong? Or maybe the homey and potentially super spicy food (I think I now prefer Lao food to Thai!)?

Qyping Through Thailand (Qype does London)

Qyping Through Thailand
Qype does London, December 2nd 2009

DSC_9823

Here’s the scoop on three fantastic hotels I recently visited while in Thailand. Each of the three could be described as “boutique” but the individual take on that concept as well as each hotel’s unique location varied considerably. I can assuredly recommend these accommodations for anyone contemplating a little Southeast Asian rest and relaxation. From the luxe and laid back Rest Detail Hotel in Hua Hin and the edge-of-the-world tropical splendour of Tubaak Krabi Boutique Resort to Bangkok’s secret urban retreat of Phranakorn Nornlen, these relaxingly low key Thai hotels offer the opportunity to unwind with convenience and style.
