Taking inspiration from Voltaire’s quote, “Ice cream is equisite.  What a shame it isn’t illegal,” the so-called Icecreamists “subversive new ice cream brand” is to launch a “subterranean ice cream installation … offering an array of vice creams and guilty pleasures” in the lower ground floor Ultralounge of Selfridges. Subversive ice cream? Yeah, whatever. But …

Gallery Hop Around Town with the ArtSlant Team
ArtSlant, August 2009

The horrors of war and consequences of many of the Futurists’ demands are made clear in the exhibition, providing a relevant moral to a fascinating and well presented art history lesson … The execution of the pieces on show is phenomenal. Particularly noteworthy is how many of the works ‘bleed’ off the canvas and onto the very walls of the gallery …

Seasonal Game Menu Review: The Compass

Compass Game Menu

The Compass is located at 58 Penton Street on the north end of Chapel Market. A short and sweet (and delicious) menu; a good wine list and plenty of real ales among the beers; tasteful decor and friendly service (during our meal, Tom and Chloe were champions of attentiveness) make this pub a most welcome addition to the rather haphazard Islington dining scene. Visit them online at www.thecompassn1.co.uk.

Wine of the Month: Berry Bros & Rudd’s 2007 Côtes du Rhône Rouge Domaine Chapoton

Wine of the Month: Berry Bros & Rudd’s 2007 Cotes du Rhone Rouge Domaine Chapoton

Nice one! Honestly, I don’t care for it as much as the Claret I reviewed last month, but there’s certainly nothing offensive about this month’s choice.  At £7.55 per bottle (£6.80 as part of a case) the price is definitely right.  With 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 15% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault (each vinified separately), this southern Rhone blend is bold without being brazen. My first sip resulted in an involuntary “Wow!” followed by my insisting that my wife have a taste. She liked it too. Peppery and velvet, it was a perfect match for a bowl of leftover chorizo and fava beans.   But I reckon this light-medium bodied dry red wine would go well with a number of dishes. It holds up on its own too. A second glass as I write up this review has me contemplating a tasty third of Berry Bros & Rudd’s 2007 Côtes du Rhône Rouge Domaine Chapoton.

For product details and more, visit the Berry Bros & Rudd online at www.bbr.com or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

Burrito Bros

The criticisms and concerns could continue. But perhaps it’s best to leave it at this: as things stand, Burrito Brothers adds nothing to a pre-existing scene. Give ’em a friendly benefit-of-the-doubt try if you must, but don’t expect these beanie boys to last long.

Michael Murphy’s Supersonic Art at the Given Gallery in San Francisco

If you’re in the Bay Area this month, check out Michael Murphy’s “Supersonic” art at the Given Gallery in the Castro. He’s got an eye for mid century modern, the wry humour to comment on just how goofy much of the mid to late 20th century was, and the talent to make such comments in a visually stunning and entertaining way.  Keep reading for an excerpt from an interview with Michael and review of his show in the San Francisco Bay Times.

Supersonic Art BY Michael Murphy On Display

By Sister Dana Van Iquity

San Francisco Bay Times, Published: August 13, 2009

… Murphy said his “ultimate goal is to create a fresh, contemporary tectonic, while recognizing certain influences of mid-20th century design and cultural zeitgeist.” Atomic deserts, hovering metal ships, roadside steel and glass space age superhighways are included in his repertoire. He said, “These are purely iconic influences, however, not ingredients for a nostalgic creation of a particular style.” The moods and environments are deliberately ambiguous. “It’s left to the viewer to decide if they are looking at places of desolation and loneliness or scenes of quiet solitude,” he said. “There’s a fantasy world out there somewhere that could actually be a real world if you want it to be.”

Net Positive (Baraka Community Partnerships)

Check out the good news I just posted on the BCP blog! In less than a day, Baraka has been able to secure more than a third of the funds required to kit out an entire village in Zambia with mosquito nets for each home.  I know firsthand from living and traveling in southern Africa (I even spent a couple of weeks in Zambia) that mozzies are a pain in the ass when you’re trying to get a good night’s sleep. Obviously, malaria sucks. Mosquito nets are a cheap and easy way to improve lives and prevent a dreadful disease.  Keep reading to find out how you can help Baraka Community Partnerships achieve a total net positive for the village of Kasalu, Zambia.
