Falling for Scotland in Autumn | Le Roi Fou

P1090238

As I alluded in my previous Falling for Scotland post about Edinburgh, making plans to dine at Chef Jerome Henry’s New Town restaurant, Le Roi Fou, resulted in a madly majestic meal. Every bite of every dish (from the six course tasting menu) delighted as it confirmed why this months old fine dining destination was dubbed Best New Restaurant at this year’s Scottish Food Awards.

All hail the new king? Oh hell yes! Continue reading

Falling for Scotland in Autumn | Edinburgh

P1090204

First stop on our Falling for Scotland tour was the magically misty city of Edinburgh – a destination both Kemey and I know fairly well but can never seem to get enough of.

A massive reason we love Edinburgh so much is that is such a lovely place for urban strolls paired with panoramic vistas. The city’s iconic castle, Arthur’s Seat, the Firth of Forth and more drift in and out of one’s periphery while navigating its winding streets and lanes. When not ambling about, there’s a glorious plentitude of cafes, bars, pubs, eateries, cultural attractions and more to drop in or wander through.

Here are the (mostly – but not exclusively – foodie) highlights of our recent drop ins and wanders. Continue reading

Spooky Dining at Balls and Company

P1090658

Greek Street’s “little meatball restaurant” served a one night only “Ghouls and Company” feast last night for Halloween. Creepy? Yeah. And tasty too!

The dinner was my first time to try the restaurant. Kemey and I had a lot of fun and were amused by the ghastly put-ons for the occasion. Continue reading

Falling for Scotland in Autumn

P1090397

Falling for Scotland is easy to do this time of year, especially when seeing the country by car.

Kemey and I hit the road a few weeks back for a mid October drive across Scotland. With stops along the way in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness, our trip was an autumnal mix of city break and rural retreat. Along the way we sought out the heights of urban culture and the wonders of Highland wilderness – encountering both in equal measure and at a splendidly relaxed pace. Continue reading

Bingeing on the Best Bites in Baltimore – All the Best Places to Eat in the US City (Metro)

Bingeing on the Best Bites in Baltimore

Big on flavour but not convention, Baltimore is just the sort of foodie destination WORTH writing about.

Edgar Allen Poe, John Waters, David Simon, Ira Glass: Baltimore, Maryland has spawned and inspired some of America’s greatest storytellers. Even the country’s National Anthem, The Star Spangled Banner, was penned by Baltimorean Francis Scott Key – and was written as a poem about an especially wild night out on Baltimore’s harbor as much as it was to be a theme song for overt American pride. Some might say there’s something in Baltimore’s water making people there so creative and keen to tell a tale. But I reckon it’s in the food.

Recipe: Smokey Sweet BBQ Baked Beans

P1090633

Growing up in Georgia, BBQ flavoured baked beans were an obligatory side at nearly any cookout or family gathering. I replicate the rich Southern dish of my childhood with this easy recipe using Jack Daniel’s Sweet Smokey BBQ Glaze.

Jack Daniel’s might be world renown for its Tennessee sipping whiskey but that’s not the only thing the famous distillery is producing these days. Jack Daniel’s also has its own range of BBQ sauces. There are six flavours in the Jack Daniel’s BBQ Sauce range including Smooth Original, Sweet Smokey, Hot Pepper, Tennessee Honey, Full Flavour Smokey and Extra Hot Habanero. Each is yummy in its own way adding distinctive and whiskey-tinged umph to all sorts of kitchen creations and back garden grills.

In particular I’ve found that Jack Daniel’s Sweet Smokey BBQ Glaze has a robust depth that pairs perfectly with baked beans. Check out my recipe and see what you think. Continue reading

Taste of the Seaport 2017

Burger Sliders

KC Trommer attends Taste of the Seaport, the annual fall festival celebrating the burgeoning food and drink scene of Lower Manhattan.

Last Saturday afternoon, on what has become a long, late summer in New York, South Street Seaport’s cobblestoned Front Street was jammed with food and music, all in honor of the 8th Annual Taste of the Seaport, a celebration of everything edible and quaffable in the area that stretches out below Manhattan’s Financial District to the docks. Homemade Versus Heinz-Made in the #SouperFreshTaste Test

Homemade Versus Heinz-Made in the #SouperFreshTaste Test - P1090565

Which tastes better, soup made from scratch in your own home kitchen or soup from a carton pulled off the supermarket shelf? My participation in a recent Souper Fresh Taste Test sponsored by Heinz had me questioning presumptions about such a query.

Of course, we all might like to think that homemade food is always the top choice. But actually, if something can be done more efficiently and cost effectively, then I’m all for having that work done by somebody else. But (as anyone who’s ever browsed across this blog should know well) flavour is key to my decisions when it comes to eating, and usually readymade meals and big brand offerings fall short of any flavoursome promise.

So when folks from Heinz got in touch about doing a taste test pitting one of the new Heinz Soup of the Day recipes against my own creation, I was keen and curious about how it would turn out – and decidedly determined to take them up on the challenge. Continue reading

What to Do If You Miss Your Connecting Flight! (Going Places)

What to Do If You Miss Your Connecting Flight!

It’s among the worst feelings in the world. You’re running across the terminal when you hear that announcement that your “gate is now closing” and you know you won’t make it there in time. Or, just as bad, you’re stuck in the air circling the airport as the plane of your connecting flight takes off without you.

Missing a flight can add layers of trouble and delays to your schedule. But if you can keep a level head, in most cases you should be able to board a suitable alternative flight and start heading in the right direction ASAP.

The Eerie Side of New England: Is Massachusetts the Spookiest State in the Union? (Miles Away)

Is Massachusetts the Spookiest State in the Union?

Autumn in New England is one of the best times of year to visit one of the prettiest parts of the US. But let’s face it. With a hint of chill in the air and the crunch of dead leaves under your feet (oh wait…was that something you heard rustling in the near distance?), heading to New England during the fall season can lead to some pretty hair-raising encounters. Perhaps spookiest of the New England states is Massachusetts, where a fascinating and sometimes bizarre history amounts to just the sorts of chills and thrills to make for a most memorable Halloween.

If you’re looking to get spooked in the Bay State then check out our guide to Massachusetts’ historic haunted places you can actually visit.

I attended the Festival of Flavour at the Fulham Reach branch of Brasserie Blanc last week to celebrate its new autumn menu. Cook Islands Idyll | I Didn’t Want to Leave

P1080977

As I conclude this series of posts about the wonderful time I had on Rarotonga and Aitutaki I can’t help thinking that I haven’t said enough about how much I loved being there. Nevertheless, now is probably a smart stopping point anyway as I could carry on writing ad nauseam about how awesome my trip to these islands was.

I can’t think of a warmer, friendlier place to visit nor one where I felt so relaxed and at ease. So, in closing, I hope at least that I’ve been able to impart enough insight about visiting the Cook Islands to tempt you to start dreaming up your own adventure in this South Seas paradise. Cook Islands Idyll | Aitutaki

P1080900

For a couple of nights during my Cook Islands Idyll I enjoyed the chilled out serenity of the tiny atoll of Aitutaki.

Getting to Aitutaki was easy enough via the daily hop from Rarotonga with Air Rarotonga (airraro.com). Leaving was a toughie. That’s not because of any problems with the airline or hitches in my schedule though, but simply because the opportunity to explore (and lounge around) paradise wasn’t something I wanted to give up so soon after arriving there.

The island really was an ideal place for a vacation. The activities I booked were awesome and engaging. Food was delicious and homey. Beachside accommodations were plush and quiet. Everyone one I met was super friendly and welcoming. Continue reading

Cook Islands Idyll | Rarotonga

P1080697

Most of my Cook Islands Idyll was spent splendidly on the “main island” of Rarotonga: an idyllic base indeed for enjoying all the warmth and wonder that a trip to the South Seas should involve.

Below is a look at some of the highlights of my Rarotonga visit – with respect to bookable activities and purchasable experiences. But more than the immense fun had on tours, during shows, in restaurants, and so forth, what I loved most about my time in the Cooks was simply the chance to engage with some of the friendliest and funniest folks I’ve ever met (seriously, everybody was a natural frickin’ comedy) and to embrace fully that “away from it all” feeling that I (and I imagine you) so long to tap into when abroad.

Oh all that and spotting whales while just hanging out. I had three casual humpback whale sightings over my weeklong stay. I saw one whale ridiculously close to shore while on a drive around Rarotonga my first day; another as I stared mindlessly out to sea while lying in bed in my beachfront suite at the first resort where I stayed on Rarotonga; and one while peering out the window during an inter-island flight from Rarotonga to Aitutaki.

Anyway, here’s that list of highlights … Continue reading

Cook Islands Idyll

P1080964

The Cook Islands is a nation comprised of 15 small islands in the middle of the South Pacific, roughly (or at least most easily described as being) halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand. I spent an ideal week discovering this Polynesian paradise back in mid September. And upon reflection I can’t think of a more relaxing time than the days I had there.

Honestly, I cannot recall ever feeling quite as good as I did during the first couple of days of my trip. Continue reading
