I only had time to spend one afternoon in A Coruña, which was a pity as it was my first time to visit this fascinating city. Perched dramatically upon a craggy and elevated spit of land thrust out into the Bay of Biscay, it was great place for a scenic (if hilly) stroll. And considering the remit of my Graze Across Galicia, I was glad to discover it’s an ideal destination for excellent food and drink as well.
First stop in A Coruña? The bar – and Casa Rita in the heart of town turned out to be a good one. Casa Rita is a rustic and “típico gallego” tavern, with a touch of Art Deco in its décor and a few homey and cheeky embellishments here and there. I’m not sure what the mood is like in the evenings, but the pre-lunch feel at Casa Rita was solidly “old man bar” with ace tapas to top it off.
The tavern specializes in homemade regional cuisine. The caldo was gorgeous and the tortilla was prepared to a high standard. Beer (Estrella Galicia, claro) was ice cold. Service was friendly and quick.
