Review of Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel

Last night I attended the IMAX 3D world preview of Alita: Battle Angel at Cineworld Cinema – London Leicester Square. The best bits of the film were an action-packed and visually stunning rollick but a few too many less than exciting lulls lingered in between.

Nonetheless, it offers enough fun for me to recommend going to see this sci fi flick when it’s released in the UK cinemas next week.

Produced by James Cameron and Jon Landau, directed by Robert Rodriguez and based on the graphic novel series Gunnm by Yukito Kishiro, Alita: Battle Angel is set in a far off and dystopian future and tells the tale of Alita (played by Rosa Salazar), a cyborg girl with a mysterious past and a powerful future.

In true Cameron fashion, the film is a blockbuster cinematic event. With Rodriguez in the director’s chair, the action is full on. My favourite scene was a whoop ass cyborg bar brawl that had ‘Rodriguez’ written all over it. Ample other energetic and rather violent moments punctuate the two-hour long movie but there is still a lot of ‘downtime’ in between that doesn’t seem to move the plot along all that much as well as a number of holes in the storyline and too many convenient plot devices to keep things rolling to a climatic end.

Of course, I didn’t go to watch Alita for anything more than big movie wow factor. I would have liked a few more chills and thrills but was pleased to have given over an evening for the screening. I suspect most fans of sci fi and super rich CGI films would feel much the same and I recommend they strongly considered catching this movie.

Alita: Battle Angel will be released in UK Cinemas, IMAX and 3D on Wednesday 6 February 2019. For more information go to foxmovies.com/movies/alita-battle-angel.

Cineworld Cinema – London Leicester Square is located at 5-6 Leicester Square, WC2H 7NA.
