EspressoCrazy’s Blogger in Residence Chris Osburn takes a break with a fellow blogger and foodie Jacintha Verdegaal to talk coffee and other matters.

Jacintha Verdegaal is a Dutch expat living in London. Her blog, Urban Pixxels, is an account of her “quest to become a true Londoner” with lots of tales about her travels, foodie discoveries and other “geeky stuff”. There’s plenty of ace photography featured on her blog as well.

Yes, it’s invariable that I will leave at least a couple of great cafes off this list in my pursuit to share a few ideal places to have a quality coffee while keeping within striking distance of all on offer around Oxford Circus. Atlanta: Strip City (Vice)

Until last year, twerking was the preserve of strip clubs and south London dancehall nights. Now, it’s a word that your great-aunt has probably said out loud, thanks to Miley Cyrus dry-humping that old man’s leg at the VMAs and op-ed writers all over the world losing their collective shit for far longer than they needed to.

In Atlanta: Strip City, we travel to Atlanta, the city whose …

Texas Hold ‘Em – What Beats What?

Interested in learning how to play poker? Texas Hold ‘Em is the most popular version of the game. The concept behind it is pretty easy to get: the hand with the five best cards wins. Indeed, it’s pretty pointless to sit down to play without knowing the hands.

Here they are in order of best to worst:

  • Royal Flush
  • Straight Flush
  • Four of a Kind
  • Full House
  • Flush
  • Straight
  • Three of a Kind
  • Two Pair
  • One Pair
  • High Card

But even if you know ‘what beats what’ in a round of Texas Hold ‘Em, the nuances of the game can take some time and consideration to figure out. That’s where the above video comes in handy. As a poker tutorial backed up with great graphics, it’s an excellent resource for learning more about mastering the game – how to make logical sense of the different hands and how to play them.

Recipe: Quick and Easy Tiramisu (espressoCrazy)

Recipe: Quick and Easy Tiramisu - DSC_4925

Here’s a super easy recipe for tiramisu. All in all it took me maybe 20 minutes to whip up. There’s no actual cooking or baking involved as long as you don’t mind using store bought wafer (I opted for ‘trifle sponges’ that I found in the baking section of my local supermarket).

The recipe is my own concoction. Honestly though, it doesn’t vary too much from other ones you’re apt to come across. Tiramisu (I’ve discovered) is a pretty basic (if incredibly scrumptious) dessert. Furthermore, I must admit my inspiration came from L’atelier des Chefs’ Classic Tiramisu recipe. Differences are that I go with amaretto instead of cognac as LdC suggests – or Marsala as lots of traditional recipes call for, and I used four espresso shots of illyClassic iperEspresso capsules instead of measuring a specific amount of coffee …

Heathrow’s New Terminal 2 to Open This June (OneTravel)

Heathrow Terminal 5

Photo/eGuide Travel

After 54 years of service, Heathrow’s Terminal 2 closed in 2009. But come this June, a newly named “Terminal 2: The Queen’s Terminal” is set to reopen.

Despite being built in the center of one of the world’s busiest airports, the construction project has not disrupted daily operations. Luis Vidal + Architects have been the concept and lead architects for the new terminal, collaborating with Pascall + Watson during fit-out. Foster + Partners were the Heathrow Airport master planners.

Vantra Vitao: Tasty Nutrition for All Dietary Needs on Oxford Street

Vantra Vitao - DSC_4989

Vegan food makes ya peppy! Or, at least, that’s the conclusion I was coming to as I watched a couple of extra-energetic vegan dancers poppin’ to some dub step at yesterday’s launch of the new Vantra Vitao restaurant on Oxford Street. I had a great time at the launch – and sampled some delicious food and drink. I’m more than happy to recommend a visit to this relaxed and health conscious restaurant just down the street (but seemingly a world away) from the calamitous Tottenham Court Road Tube station.

Even a cursory view of this blog immediately ought to reveal that my diet is hardly vegan. Still, when food is tasty, it’s tasty. And if it’s actually really healthy to boot, well then so much the better! Such is the case at the newly opened Vantra Vitao on Oxford Street (yes, the same veggie-friendly eatery that used to be on Soho Street). The “vocktails” that I sampled were excellent. There was a coconutty shake that really did it for me, and I especially liked the bar’s most popular drink, the cold pressed Green Juice. And man did I feel a fantastic boost after having a glassful of that. There’s a variety of organic spirits, wines and beers too (I didn’t try any). Food wise, I enjoyed everything I tasted, In particular, I loved the live-sprouted buckwheat pizza with tomato sauce. I was invited only to sample a la carte items, but the restaurant’s buffet bar looked like a pretty scrumptious option too.

Vantra Vitao - DSC_5008

Despite the glare emitted from the Primark discount department store across the street, visiting Vantra felt like I’d taken an impromptu excursion out of town. A little too hippie for my usual taste (there was someone “playing” a rain stick and much talk of Lord Buddha from one of the performers entertaining the launch party guests), I nonetheless found Vantra to be a welcome retreat – and one I’ll keep in mind when I need a quick escape from the Zone 1 hustle. Folks (staff and guests) were friendly and seemed pleased to be there. Whatever your dietary persuasion or how much you love eating animal flesh, you’ve gotta give it up for an independently owned restaurant making a go of it on a thoroughfare lined with just about every high street brand you can imagine. Go Vantra go!

Vantra Vitao is located at 25-27 Oxford Street, W1D 2DW. Find out more at vitao.co.uk.

La Giaconda Café Bar Restaurant on Denmark Street

gdr_restaurant_01_600_pixels

Following a major refurbishment, Denmark Street’s landmark rock ‘n roll restaurant, La Giaconda Café Bar Restaurant, brings together a quality caff experience and a fine dining option in the heart of Soho.

There’s music in the air on Denmark Street, Britain’s answer to New York’s Tin Pan Alley and once the nexus of British pop music publishing and songwriting. The street’s connection to the music industry goes back almost 100 years. Even since pop got electric and loud the street has played a significant role. Jimi Hendrix recorded here. So did the Sex Pistols, who lived on the street as well. Elton John wrote Your Song here.

These days though, like so much of Central London, Denmark Street is all about the retail. But the street is still very much a musician’s destination. In fact, I reckon every business on the street is either a music store or a live music venue, except for La Giaconda. I suppose musicians have to eat too, and apparently La Giaconda has been a good place traditionally to do it. The Kinks and the Rolling Stones are all reported as having grabbed a bite here. Word is that David Bowie met the members of his first band at Giaconda.

No hit songs under my belt or in the works, I nonetheless had a lovely low key dinner at La Giaconda a few Friday nights back. I’m happy to recommend the restaurant to anyone looking for a quick bite or a relaxed dinner. The front room caff seems a perfectly perfunctory place to have your breakfast and sip your cuppa in the morning while the back dining room (a transformed courtyard with lots of light) is a simple yet elegant setting for more serious – even rather romantic – dining.

My meal was had in the latter where I was wowed by a crab bisque starter (£6.50); a rib of beef main with oxtail and shallots, salad and chips (£19.50); and an excellent quince and chestnut trifle (£6.50 – and well worth an encore visit!). All in all, I’d say La Giaconda offers a rather nifty if not terribly fussy menu. Maybe a bit stodgy (which I don’t think is necessarily a bad thing). I didn’t notice much in the way of vegetarian friendly options. However, there were plenty of great seafood dishes (on the menu and as specials).

Before my meal I enjoyed a Godfather cocktail (amaretto and Scotch, £7.50) that really took the edge off things and introduced my weekend in potently pleasing style. Wine during dinner was a treat going with the recommendations of co-owner Trace Peterson (she and her chef husband Paul Merrony also own nearby Flat White and Milk Bar). I loved the 2011 Chateau La Croix Chantecaille Saint Emilion.

Does La Giaconda Café Bar Restaurant sound like tunefully tasty place to eat? Visit the restaurant at 9 Denmark Street, WC2 H8LS. Find out more at giacondadining.com.

London Celebrates Shakespeare’s 450th Birthday (CheapOair)

London Snow Day: Borough Market and the South Bank

Guess who’s turning 450 this year? It’s William Shakespeare. With the subject matter and themes of his work ringing as true as ever before, The Bard’s his plays are still performed to sold out audiences around the globe – including his own Globe Theatre in London. And speaking of London, Shakespeare’s chosen home for most of his life, you best believe there’s plenty going on this year to celebrate the life of this city’s most famed writers, and arguably the world’s greatest poet and playwright.

Here’s a list of where to check out top Shakespearean performances and related happenings when you visit London …

Egypt: How to Play a Gig in a Revolution (Noisy)

Noisey and Colonel Blimp are very excited to present ‘Egypt: How to Play a Gig in a Revolution’. Disillusioned with the gig circuit at home, London band I.R.O.K travelled to Cairo, Egypt, to witness the aftermath of the revolution and try and play some shows for the locals. Despite nobody there knowing their music, having hardly any contacts over there and receiving numerous warnings about going out after dark, the band persevered and had a genuinely life changing experience.

Super Yacht Me

CRN MY 68mt rendering

So, I left my one bedroom flat in East London (Zone 2) early on a ho-hum Tuesday morning to hop the bus en route to the exclusive five star May Fair Hotel just off the Piccadilly to attend Superyachts.com‘s Top 100, an event for mega yacht execs and brand reps to rub elbows and gab about the future of their industry. Featuring a full day of press workshops with “the visionary builders and designers behind the largest super yachts in the world”, Top 100 had been set up for journos to crash “intimate sessions with the heads of the super yacht industry, gain an in-depth insight into the largest luxury yachts set to launch in 2014 and discuss the most vital topics surrounding the world’s most incredible yachts”.

The workshops – each set in a suite as big or bigger than my humble Hackney home – proved a chance for me to delve into ambivalence with nuanced discussions about boats that in some cases would almost eclipse the very neighbourhood where my Victorian loft conversion was situated. Interviews with CEOs, marketeers and leading edge designers served as an introduction to observe an alien world. It was an exquisite world to be sure, where standards were set high and expectations even higher, but one which left me thinking about which line I should toe – aspiring and audacious or proudly practical and overtly down to earth.

Ever since I had wangled my way onto a press trip to a mega yacht shipyard on Italy’s Adriatic coast last spring (not to mention a regatta in French Polynesia a couple of months after that), I’ve been getting invites to all sorts of yachty stuff. When I can go, I do. I’m as much a wannabe gawker as the next guy, and big toys for big boys have a way of capturing my imagination like little else … as well as filling my thoughts with a beguiling mix of consternation and wonder. To pit my general disdain for elitism against a genuine admiration of a resilient industry weathering years of global financial crises while creating and providing highly skilled jobs and the chance for designers and craftspeople to do amazing work can provoke a heaping dose of internal conflict. I can’t help but see almost every facet of the industry as contributing to what amounts to a pissing content – but one worth billions of pounds and resulting in the livelihoods of plenty of hardworking people.

With respect to the 2014 forecast, it was full speed ahead. Broad consensus seemed to suggest that rich folks will keep getting richer and that their yachts will continue to grow evermore mega. Indeed, whereas a couple of decades ago the typical luxury yacht needed to be at least 40 metres long to qualify for the Top 100, the minimum length today is 75 metres.

The same morning I publicly transporting my way to the Top 100, custom yacht builder CRN signed a letter with a Chinese client for a 68 metres super yacht, the brand’s biggest vessel ever sold in China. Coincidentally, my first workshop of the day was with CRN. China came up during my meeting with CEO Lamberto Tacoli and Brand Manager Luca Boldrini but just general comments about expanding markets – and certainly nothing about any specific plans. Still I suspect the LOI business was going down at about the same time that I was with Tacoli and Boldrini. Their Blackberries started buzzing like crazy at one point during our session. Both played it cool, but afterward when I would see them in passing they seemed to have their phones glued to their faces (as well as intriguingly gleeful yet calculating grins).

With increasing interest and demand from China will come the development of marinas and related infrastructure across East Asia, an area with little currently to accommodate luxury yacht lifestyle. Along with that will be the prospect of more jobs and the hope of at least a bit more spreading around of exceptionally concentrated wealth. I suppose this is something the mega yacht industry sees as the upshot of their work. As Tacoli put it during the interview in an off-the-cuff statement about innovation during my morning chat with him, “an emperor can’t be a pessimist”.

At the very least, the new super yacht bound for China should give me and maybe even some writerly types on the other side of the planet something to ponder on while sitting on the bus.

Daawat Indian Restaurant at the Strand Palace Hotel

Daawat Indian Restaurant at Strand Palace Hotel - DSC_4913

Presenting tried and true South Asian comfort food on the Strand and just down the street from Covent Garden, Daawat Indian restaurant at the four star (and newly renovated) Strand Palace Hotel is a smart choice when you’re on the go and seeking a satisfying meal.

During a recent evening visit, I went with the Chef’s Special Taster Menu (£22) which featured a range of five starters (I especially liked the “saufiyani murgh malai kebab” of marinated chicken with fennel seeds, cashews and cream cooked in the tandoor) and a “duo of curries” main course of chicken tikka masala and lamb dopiaza, all served with Basmati rice and ample naan. There were certainly plenty of other options worth consideration too, including a very budget friendly three course pre dinner menu available between 4 and 7pm for only £15.

Despite a more than adequate wine list, I found a Cobra beer (£4.50 for a 330ml bottle) to my favour. That along with some coconut ice cream (£6) for my dessert, and I was set for the night.

Service was super efficient (if a bit brusque once or twice), and I would have no issue popping in there again for an express lunch or pre theatre dinner when seeking a hearty meal but strapped for time.

Bottom line: a perfectly respectable curry house is in a great location offering value for money dinning in a competitive and busy area.

Daawat is located at the Strand Palace Hotel, 372 Strand, WC2R 0JJ . Find out more at strandpalacehotel.co.uk/eat-drink-with-us/our-restaurant-and-bars/daawat

Alma de Cuba – Cuban Coffee Delivered to Your Door

Alma de Cuba - Cuban Coffee - DSC_4692

Once the undisputed king of caffé , the status and availability of Cuban coffee has steadily waned over the past half century – just as demand for coffee has continued to expand. Enter: Alma de Cuba, on a mission to “restore Cuban coffee – once the world’s favourite – back to its rightful position”. Revolutionary or just revolting? Here’s my take on this Caribbean cuppa joe.

What this handpicked Cuban grown coffee has going for it though is a toasty taste from small batch roasting. Plus, it’s pretty nifty to note that these beans are new to the British market as well. According to the Alma de Cuba folks:

Up to the 1940s, Cuban coffee plantations were famed for producing some of the finest coffee beans money could buy. But sadly this changed. By 2012, Cuban coffee production was in what seemed like terminal decline. It looked like nothing could save it – until now. Through a carefully built partnership with the Cubans, Alma de Cuba is working towards supplying Cuba’s mountain coffee farmers with the tools they need to help re-establish Cuba’s coffee crops once and for all.

The “nectarous coffee with a clean taste and medium body” is available exclusively online via Alma de Cuba and comes in a 250g attractive keepsake tin (beans or ground, £15) or as a 1kg bag which is also supposed to be a nicely designed keeper too (beans only, £30).

Find out more at almacuba.com.
