Is Your Brekkie Worth £400? Join Wink Bingo’s Breakfast Club and Win!

30p

Breakfast. It’s the smartest way to start any day and definitely my favourite meal. Whether I’m being healthy with a wholesome and basic bowl of oats or indulging in a full-on full English, breakfast sets the tone for my day. I’m pretty ambivalent about what constitutes the perfect morning meal. I love it all! It just really depends on my schedule (do I need to dash out the door or can I linger over something lavish?) and how I expect the day to unfold.

One thing’s for sure, I’ve never had an opportunity to enjoy a breakfast worth £400 – that is not until now thanks to a new Breakfast Club competition from the folks at Wink Bingo.

Wink Bingo’s Breakfast Club starts today. To play all you’ve got to do is like the Wink Bingo Facebook page and post a picture of your breakfast to be in with a chance of winning a £400 ASDA voucher. The comp runs until 26 January. So be sure to get your entries in quick. The more likes you get for your breakfast pic the more likely you are to win.

In addition to the £400 ASDA voucher, participants will have a chance to win $50 ASDA vouchers and more – simply by playing fun and friendly food-themed bingo chat games, or bingoing on food patterns in Wink’s 75 ball bingo rooms.

New Year’s Eve Dinner at Nobu London

000 aaa Nobu NYE Dinner_01 (4)

What a way to end the year (and start the next)! The seven course New Year’s Eve 2013 dinner and wine menu at Nobu London at the Metropolitan Hotel ended the year on a delectable note and set high the bar for restaurant experiences for the months to come.

Check it out:

  • Seared salmon sashimi with jalapeno dressing, paired with Vouvray 2010, Vincent Raimbault, Loire;
  • Shrimp harumaki spicy miso, paired with Pinot Gris 2011, Les Princes Abbes, Domaines Schlumberger, Alsace;
  • Tuna sashimi salad with ponzu dressing (luxuriantly laden with loads of fresh black truffles might I add!), paired with Pouilly-Fuisse Vieilles Vignes 2011, Domaine des Gerbeaux, Burgundy;
  • Shiso and mint sea bass with roasted bell pepper sauce, paired with Montagny Premier Cru Les Plateieres 2010, Domaine Berthenet, Burgundy;
  • Roasted Venison with blueberry sansho sauce, paired with Clos Henri Pinot Noir 2009, Marlborough;
  • Assorted Nobu sushi, paired with Hokusetsu Junmai Dai-Ginjo; and
  • Ecuadorian chocolate mousse , orange and toffee cream, vanilla and olive oil sponge, white goma ice cream, paired with Sherry Moscatel Emilin, Solera Reserva, Lustau.

Believe me, it was all good and to a standard above London’s usual fine fare offerings, even in this upscale part of town. Still for me, the highlights were easy to discern. That tuna sashimi was a dream. And, typical to my taste buds, the wines from Burgundy were an absolute delight. The venison tasted great but seemed somewhat novel; I kinda wished I’d gone with dining partner Kemey’s pescaterian substitute: a big yummy lobster salad. Dessert seemed a bit obligatory but it was scrumptious and the sherry served alongside it was a gorgeous way to end an extraordinary meal.

Service (noticeably overwhelmed by a packed house of overly expecting NYE celebrants) proved efficient and capable. The setting? Maybe not as swish as one might expect but elegant and comfortable – just right really. And the lofty view across Park Lane to Hyde Park is a lovely one.

The dinner (£95 per person, £150 per person with paired wines) wasn’t my Nobu first. I’d dined at the original Nobu in New York ages ago, and during my 2012 visit to Japan I had an exquisite lunch (possibly the best that year) at Itoh Dining by Nobu in the mountain resort town of Hakone. This was, however, my first Nobu experience in London. And not even halfway through my meal I was keen to plot a repeat visit … and to try to get in Nobu’s Berkeley Street outlet ASAP. Two weeks into 2014 and since my visit, those intentions have not changed.

Double the fun, NYE is also the anniversary of when Kemey and I met. So what we do that night doesn’t necessarily have to be as fancy schmancy as dinner at Nobu, but it certainly should be something special. We left on a tipsy foodie high, glad to have enjoyed such a feast and to start a new year together so deliciously.

A no brainer choice for important occasions when palates must be pleased, Nobu London is located on the first floor of the Metropolitan Hotel, 19 Old Park Lane, W1K 1LB. There’s another Nobu restaurant just down the street at Berkeley Street as well. Find out more at noburestaurants.com/london.

Super Bowl Sunday in London (OneTravel)

Rileys Sports Bar, Haymarket..Photograph: Rosie Hallam

Excited about that upcoming trip to London but bummed because you think you’ll have to miss the big game on TV? Nonsense. The NFL is becoming more and more popular in the UK. Besides, if there’s a reason to drink beer and watch sports, you can be sure the Brits are on top of that action. Keep in mind that to see the Super Bowl live while in London, you’ll need to be a night owl (or still getting over your jet lag) as the UK is five hours ahead of the US East Coast.

Here’s a quartet of great London venues (providing comfortable multi-screen viewing) where you can catch Super 2014 live and in style on Sunday February 2nd.

Restaurant Review: Rocket Bishopsgate

DSC_4351

A crowd pleasing menu at a convenient location with funky décor, Rocket Bishopsgate is a safe bet decision if you’re looking for a quick bite or a night out near Liverpool Street Station.

Based on a recent Friday night dinner at Rocket, I reckon it’s the sort of place one should be glad to have at hand if working nearby or regularly commuting through Liverpool Street Station (or Shoreditch High Street Overground for that matter). Dining room side, I had a satisfying and reasonably priced meal in a comfy setting while folks in the adjacent bar were dancing to a DJ and starting to get a gleeful groove on with the weekend properly commenced.

DSC_4343

The highlight of my meal was a starter course of fried spicy baby squid with rocket, garnished with peppers and spring onions served with a sweet chilli and lemon dressing (£6.25). For my main I had an intriguing smoked black pudding, butterfly king prawn and pancetta with green chillies pizza (£13.50). Hardly blown away by it, I liked it. And if that sort of combo of toppings sounds like something you’d enjoy, I would recommend it. I had the pleasure of dining with Kemey (our first Friday night out together in weeks) and I thought she scored with her choice of starters, the artichoke with truffle oil soup of the day (£5.85). I was also impressed by Rocket’s extensive wine selection. It was nice to start our dinner with a chin chin of Ferarri Pearle Blanc Brut 2006 (£36 for a bottle or £8.25 for a flute).

Service was super friendly and diligent. The look and feel of the venue was quirky 80s retro with a touch of swank.

Located at 201 Bishopsgate, EC2M 3AB, keep Rocket Bishopsgate in mind for no fuss dinners, mixed company lunches and afterwork drinks. Rocket has two other London locations at Adams Court and Canary Wharf as well as an outlet in Nottingham. Find out more at rocketrestaurants.co.uk.

10 Reasons to Eat and Drink at London’s Seven Dials (CheapOair)

DSC_3367

Seven Dials is a small but popular area of Central London near Covent Garden where seven streets converge at one junction. The area is conveniently located near a number of Tube stations including Covent Garden, Leicester Square and Holborn which are well within easy walking distance.

Teeming with an overabundance of bars, cafes, clubs, shops and more, its a smart spot for exploring or meeting up with friends – especially if you’re up for grabbing something good to eat or drink. Here’s a hardly exhaustive look at ten of the best places to keep in mind when you visit …

Ergon, Greek Deli + Cuisine in Marylebone

DSC_4309

Ergon is a newly opened Greek deli and restaurant in Marylebone. Its menu features dishes designed by Dimitris Skarmoutsos, Greece’s best know celebrity chef. The shop sells products only from independent Greek producers. And, in the face of the the gargantuan econonomic meltdown, this startup business managed to expand across Greece and actually make a profit.

Now with its Picton Place shop launched just before the new year, Ergon aims to bring an authentic taste of Greece to London. The reasons to visit are many. But if you need just one reason go, make it a take home jar of Ergon’s cod roe spread. That stuff is flippin’ gorgeous.

Back in mid December, I got to sit in on a tasting session at Ergon and to take home a few goodies from the deli shelves. I really enjoyed everything I tried at this instant go-to favourite for comfort food in a convenient location. Dishes I especially loved included Gruyere from Naxos (rolled in carob flour, oat flakes, poppy seeds and served with rose petals in syrup, £7); “Staka” cream from Chania with poached eggs (£6); 12 hour slow cooked lemon lamb joint with marjoram (£18); and heartily satisfying mousaka (£14). Prices for portions and preparations were reasonable, and I think most people would be happy to got there for a snack or complete meal.

DSC_4321

As for the deli selection, wow. A smartly curated range of products like the smoky smooth cod roe spread (which I found utterly gorgeous and must buy another jar of soon), plenty of cured meats, Greek craft beers (I loved sipping a Volkan from Santorini), honeys and oils (insert mega etc) – all made in Greece by indie producers – are just the sort of treats worth shopping for.

And speaking of shopping, the big winter sales are still on, right? If retail therapy’s your thing and you plan on scavenging the aisles of Selfridges, drop by Ergon for a tasty break. The minimalist and inviting resto-deli is essentially located right round the corner from the department store. Sales or not, ‘just behind’ Selfridges is a handy location for all sorts of central London excursions.

Ergon is located at 16 Picton Place, W1U 1BP. Find out more at ergonproducts.gr.

Top Tips for London’s Big Winter Sales (CheapOair)

DSC_8262

London’s best shops and department stores may be taking down the Christmas lights and tossing their trees to the curb, but for bargain hunters visiting in search of a heavy dose of retail therapy the festivities have only just begun with the launch of the annual winter sales. So if Santa didn’t quite get it right in 2013, a New Year’s resolution to hit the high streets of London might be just the thing for ringing in 2014 in fine style (and at a fraction of what it might usually cost).

Restaurant Review: Flesh & Buns … and Rock ‘n Roll

photo 1

Carnivorous gnashing to a heavy metal soundtrack? Yee-aye-uh! Who knew going out for Japanese comfort food could provide such a rawkin’ good time? The folks behind Flesh & Buns apparently.

I had a lot of fun during my dine at the new(ish)ly opened Flesh & Buns izakaya restaurant back before Christmas. From the same lot of Soho restaurant smarty pants behind the exceptionally successful Bone Daddies ramen bar, the cavernous Seven Dials eatery offers a street food menu with a East Asian style buns as the star of the show. I loved the crispy piglet belly buns (with mustard miso and pickled apple, £14.50) and the lamb chops (with kimchi spice and pickled carrots, £19.50). Beyond the buns, there’s a range of small bites and sharing dishes along with sushi and sashimi, cocktails and more.

photo 2

Other stuff I liked about Flesh & Buns: the near-porn manga wallpaper in the men’s, the epic litany of hard rock and metal classics piped through the restaurant (my memory’s a bit fuzzy but I think they actually played some Dio while I was there), and the overall casual vibe of the place.

A cinch to recommend for boozy belly bustin’ nights on the town with close friends, Flesh & Buns is located at 41 Earlham Street, WC2H 9LX. Find out more at fleshandbuns.com.

25% Off Flying Burger Company Premium Burger Delivery

TheFlyingBurgerCo_2013.11.01-134

Back before all the festive season hoo-ha I had the pleasure of attending a launch party hosted by London’s newest burger delivery service, Flying Burger Company. I was really impressed with the quality of the burgers. And yes they were actually delivered to the event – so I got a taste of the real deal experience.

Heck, I liked the burgers so much (erm, I had two) that in addition to finally getting round to reviewing the service, I looked into scoring a nifty little 25% discount for the month of January as an extra incentive for all my readers (well those in the Flying Burger catchment area anyway) to give the menu a try.

Flying Burger Company is a burger-only/delivery-only biz. Right now it’s serving just a small area of West London – W11 4, W14 8, W14 0, W6 7 and W12 8 – roughly Notting Hill and bits near High Street Kensington, Shepherd’s Bush, and Hammersmith. However, I reckon the concept is a smart one and has a good chance of taking off and successfully cruising soon with little turbulence. Indeed, I wouldn’t be surprised at all to see service extend across London soon.

Burgers consist of 100% grass-fed Aberdeen Angus aged at least 28 days and served on lightly toasted demi-brioche buns. They range from the “Twin Prop” classic: (two beef patties with lettuce, tomato, gherkins, “dijonnaise” and house sauce, £7.50) to the mega meaty “Lingbergher” (three beef patties with cheese, caramelised onion jam, crispy bacon, gherkins, bacon mayonnaise, dijonnaise, house sauce and crispy onions, £11.95).

During the event I attended, I particularly enjoyed sinking my teeth into the bacon and cheese “Pan Ham” burger (£8.75) featuring two beef patties, melted cheese, crispy streaky bacon, gherkins and bacon mayonnaise. There’s a variety of sides as well. I liked the medium-sized, with-the-skins-on fries (£2.95) and thought they were great dipped in FBC’s house sauce (£0.75) as well as the especially moreish hot cheese sauce (£1).

The aviation schtick doesn’t stop with the names of the burgers. Deliveries are made by “pilots” donning goggles and flight jackets who salute customers when a delivery is completed. Beyond all the high flying kitsch, Flying Burger Company’s aim is to get all orders filled and in the hands of customers within 30 minutes.

When you order, be sure to use this code for a 25% discount: TIKI25. And be sure to do it soon – this discount is only valid during the month of January 2014.

For more information and to place an order go to flyingburger.co.

2014 Resolutions

DSC_8950

I like what I do and I like how this past year played out. New Year’s resolution for 2014? Keep plugging away.

With respect to keeping my resolutions for 2013, I think I did a pretty decent job. I never managed to get that gorilla suit I’ve been dreaming about for years, but – hey – I’ve been busy blogging, travelling, blogging some more and, well, blogging more on top of that. Besides, it’s nice having something left to strive for 😉

2013 was the first year since I started blogging back in 2006 that my own blog became the main focus (and source of income) for me as a writer and photographer. Achieving that has been a major goal over the past seven years, and it feels great being able to say I finally got there.

Thanks to everyone who helped make these past 12 months so fantastic. I hope you’re having as much fun as I am and that the year ahead is a peaceful and prosperous one for you.

Happy New Year!
