@GBChefs Summertime App: 21 Chefs, 105 Recipes, One Good Cause

Great British Chefs Summertime App

Great British Chefs’ new Summertime app for iPhone and iPad, developed in association with Ocado, offers 105 recipes from 21 chefs for summery occasions and events.

The app includes recipes ranging from classics with a twist such as coronation chicken salad, fish and chips, curried chicken Kiev, Scotch eggs and Eton mess to dinner party stunners a la burrata with chickpea fritters, ceviche of trout with avocado sorbet, grilled sea bass with fennel and orange salad, cod with pork belly, cherry soup and Pimm’s & Hendricks jelly.

All that for the very generous price of only £1.99 and available at App Store. But even more generous is what happens with your money when you buy the app:

Great British Chefs will donate all proceeds, less VAT and any commissions payable, equating to a minimum donation of £1.20 from the sale of each Summertime app to Action Against Hunger to support the charity’s life saving programmes.

Action Against Hunger is a global humanitarian organization committed to ending world hunger, working to save the lives of malnourished children while providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger.

The 21 chefs who have contributed five recipes each:

  • Tom Aikens,
  • Marcus Wareing,
  • Pascal Aussignac,
  • Nathan Outlaw,
  • Martin Wishart,
  • Richard Corrigan,
  • Alfred Prasad,
  • Robert Thompson,

Olympics in London? That’s So 2012. Next Big Thing is Expo 2015 in Milan.

Untitled

After the London Olympics the next big global get-together in Europe will be Expo 2015. This “extraordinary universal event displaying tradition, creativity and innovation” will be held from 1 May to 31 October, 2015 at a newly constructed site in Milan, Italy.

The first Expo was in London back in 1851. Through the years these Universal Expositions have served as “a showcase of innovation and human inspiration” like when Alexander Graham Bell presented his telephone prototype at Expo Philadelphia in 1876 or when the Eiffel Tower was designed and built for the Paris Expo in 1889.

The theme of Expo 2015 will be Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life. A big world party about food … in Italy? This should be yummy. Of course, one aim of the Expo is to be delicious fun for all but also to address the issues of sustainability, food inequality and nutrition while offering a meeting place for “top creative minds” and atmosphere for “great business opportunities”.

I’m intrigued and looking forward to watching how this capital of style will roll out a gracious benvenuti for the world. Find out more at expo2015.org.

East Village: London 2012’s First “Legacy” Neighbourhood

LDP 2012.08.00.0a - Village

Up until Danny Boyle’s Opening Ceremony dazzled the nation and billions of folks from around the world watching it on TV, the legacy of The Games and their impact on London was the key Olympics topic. At the moment, the convo and social media chatter are all about the gold and the athletes who are trying to achieve it. And rightly so. But, still the question looms:

What happens after The Games?

The above video was passed along to me at Living Legacy East Village, a recent press briefing about East Village – the “new name and legacy identity fo rthe London 2012 Olympic Village” – with reps from the development’s investors, Qatari Diar Delancey (a joint venture between Qatari Diar Real Estate Development Company and Delancey) and Triathlon Homes (also a joint venture, this one a public/private effort between First Base, East Thames Group and Southern Housing Group).

Obviously, the clip presents East Village in a flattering light, but I think it is thorough in explaining the plans and aspirations for such a large scale residential project.

Just a few interesting facts about East Village and the 2,818 homes that will be available for rent there from summer 2013:

– East Village has 27 hectares of land (equivalent to St James’s Park) including 5 park areas, public squares, communal
gardens, play areas and courtyards;

– East Village is home to London’s third largest park, the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which is also the largest park created in Europe in 150 years;

– The Village will feature an orchard with fruit that residents will be encouraged to pick. There will be four types of Bramley apple trees, as well as cooking apple, plum and pear trees.

What do you think about the London 2012 Olympic Athletes’ Village and how it will be once transformed into East Village? Do you reckon as Alex Lifschutz (Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands) purposed at the briefing that this bit of London 2012 legacy will be the new Regent’s Park?

Would you live there?

#iwasthere But … Westfield Closed to Non Olympic Ticket Holders Today and Saturday

DSC_5839

If you’ve been to the Olympic Park or even just to Westfield Stratford City since the Games started you know that snazzed up bit of East End regeneration has become a bustling bazaar of gargantuan proportions. In fact, it’s so damn busy that, according to the BBC, Westfield is only letting staff and Olympic ticket holders enter the shopping centre between 10:30 BST and 17 today (Friday the 3rd) and tomorrow (Saturday the 4th) . The Guardian reports that “although spectators are milling around” … takings among Westfield retailers are understood to be “significantly down.”

Check out Westfield Stratford City’s Facebook page and Twitter feed for more up-to-date information.

Total #HomeAdvantage: Olympic Experience Delivered with BA Style and Comfort

DSC_5614

Yesterday I moseyed around the Olympic Park and attended a couple of water polo matches as a guest of British Airways – another perk to being included in its Home Advantage Influencer Programme (see my post about visiting BA’s Waterside HQ here). The folks representing BA were so accommodating and actually seemed to genuinely appreciate me taking advantage of their hospitality (I was like ‘no way, thank you!’)

DSC_5621

It was my second visit to the park and presented another super fun chance to take way too many photos. Tourists and sports enthusiasts of all ages from around the globe beaming with national pride and more than keen to have their picture taken … the world’s largest McDonald’s .. Anish Kapoor’s Orbit Tower … the modern shopping mall cum world bazaar buzz at Westfield … the soldiers providing security or otherwise milling about in their free time … the news teams swarming … the kids … the sometimes too gleeful volunteers … it was almost too much to take it but amazing to experience nonetheless.

DSC_5588

The invitation yielded an excellent opportunity to check out the Olympic Hospitality Centre as well. I had a very nice lunch (would go back just for the cheeseboard honestly) and a couple of drinks in the very swish British Airways Lounge. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of plopping down in a BA lounge at an airport, think along those lines (but maybe even just a little bit more luxurious and inviting). It was a great place to chill out, watch some Olympic events on the multiple and enormous flat screen TVs (with amazing audio) and, of course, be pampered in first class style.

DSC_5666

And what about the water polo? Really engaging stuff!. The Italy v Greece match, which ended in a draw, was especially fast paced and showed just how athletic and aggressive this sport can be. And with a bunch of Greeks and Italians in the filled stands of the Water Polo Arena (a temporary structure with an inflatable roof to be broken down and shipped to Rio for the 2016 Games), it would be an understatement to say the atmosphere was anything less than enthusiastic.

DSC_5693

I knew I’d get a kick out of the Olympics coming to town, but I had no idea I would have such an awesome time experiencing the event firsthand and watching it unfold before my somewhat bewildered eyes. This is mind boggling spectacle to the very max. The good, the bad, the WTF all right here right now. Wow.

Craft Beer and Killer Pub Grub at The North Pole, New North Road, N1

DSC01167

I was invited along the other night to review recently spruced up pub, The North Pole. A couple of days later, I’m still feeling rather smug for excepting the invite. Now under new management, this New North Road establishment is the sort of place any self respecting beer drinkers would be proud to call their local. And if the whole burgers, BBQ, meat mania sweeping London at the moment is to your liking, then The North Pole will be too.

Beer. The place specialises in craft beer, real ale and ciders with 22 on draught and 30 by the bottle, all from independent suppliers. Beers on offer suggest a line up that’s as international in scope as, well you know, that big sporting event that’s on at the moment just a bit east of this Islington watering hole. To be honest, the selection almost overwhelmed my girlfriend and me. But I reckon that’s a good thing, and super affable manager, Ray, accommodated Kemey and me with samples of a variety drafts to help in our selection.

I went with a crisp on tap pilsner from new Cornish brewery, Harbour. I really liked it and it totally suited my summer sipping tastes. Kemey tried a Moosehead (upon my suggestion). She approved.

Kegs include Innis and Gunn Original from Edinburgh; Harbour Brewing from Cornwall; Belgian Bacchus Framboise; Schneider Aventinus (Germany); and American slurper, Flying Dog Doggy Style Pale Ale made Stateside.

Bottles include Goose Island Madame Rose and Pepe Nero (USA); Cave Creek Chillibeer (Mexico); Brouwerij De Troch Exotic (Belgium); Moosehead (Canada); Coopers Ale (Austria); Nøgne ø Saison (Norway); and Brewdog Dogma from the UK.

Food. I devoured a massive whole rack of BBQ ribs with coleslaw and (especially yummy) potato salad. I thought it was very good value at £12. K had the haddock with chips, mushy pies and tartare sauce (£10) – definitely up to pub grub standards; she remarked on how tasty the sauce was. Burgers served to the table next to ours looked enviably juicy.

Vibe. Laid back but attentive and friendly service … Great cross section of locals out for a night: a young couple on a date; a solo dining dude dropping in for an afterwork burger on his way home; a family with small children; some blokes out for a few drinks … The North Poles came across as a perfect spot to keep in mind for either a quick pint or a more formal meal (yes, they do Sunday roasts). There’s a beer garden – and a games room too. During my and Kemey’s visit, its was all about the Olympics on the big screen tellies. Fun. But, it would have been easy enough to escape the screens by sitting outside, in the dining room or elsewhere in this huge but nonetheless cosy pub.

I could go on, but I think you get the delicious gist.

The North Pole is located at 188-190 New North Road, N1 7BJ (very close to the stroll-worthy Regent’s Canal). Find out more at thenorthpolepub.co.uk.

“Shutterbuggery” by My Outsourced Content Creator from the Philippines

fairy

Another great post by Eloise, my outsourced content creator from the Philippines: solid writer and ace photographer!

“Shutterbuggery” – The First Shot to Seriousness

I often think that I am a shutterbug. For an amateur photographer, that name would be like gold. As if it is a new nickname, a budding hobbyist will immediately embrace that name and be proud of it for a long time and will eventually realize it is an insult for those professional photographers. I don’t really care much about technicalities or nicknames and such, and I’d shrug it off if I’m called a shutterbug. I’m more into taking photos the way I want than fuss over what level I am in this field. I bet I’m one of those shutterbugs, I don’t really know.

gown

Well, there was a time when I really focused all my energy into developing what my father has said to be raw potential. I drowned myself in learning how to use a camera properly although when I think of it now, I already forgot half of the names of the techniques right after I turn off the computer. Even until now, I still have a hard time remembering names or what a technique like this or that is called. But all is well. I started taking photos of almost about anything when I was a kid and the thrill of getting nice photos never left me. I am pretty sure I can produce good photos if I’d put my mind into it yet I am aware I am far from being a real photographer. So between those times of learning photography someone asked me to be the photographer of their wedding event. I was shocked and excited at the same time. I prepared everything with nervousness and constant self boosting of confidence. It was crazy! However when the date of the wedding came, I was really excited and bursting with energy so I clicked and clicked my camera happily.

married

mother

The ceremony was bliss. Everything happened so fast and not long after that, my body staggers below my weight. Filipino weddings are very different from other cultures and are mostly about meeting new people, eating merrily together and taking pictures. Insert a ceremony in between. You can just imagine how tired I got because almost all the people want me to be at their side because I carry a camera. It was a tiring yet fun filled day. So I included some of the photos I have of the wedding. I hope you like them. Moreover, if you think I still have a lot to improve, please do tell.

Buy or Sell Tix with StubHub UK

DSCF1669

StubHub, the world’s largest ticket marketplace, provides fans of all types with a safe and convenient way to buy tickets for concerts, theatre and sporting events – and offers an easy way for folks to sell their own tickets when they can’t go to an event for whatever reason.

Cool stuff, huh? And guess what? StubHub isn’t just another great American service for American customers only. It works here in the UK as well. StubHub UK has been around since December 2011 and is going strong. The site is an eBay company. So there’s some clout and know how backing it up, and all orders are covered by StubHub’s FanProtect™ Guarantee which provides a win/win situation for both buyers and sellers.

As a buyer using StubHub you’re able to get the tix you ordered, valid for entry and arriving on time. If some reason that doesn’t happen, Stubhub will locate comparable replacement tickets or provide you with a refund. For sellers, you have a free service for listing tickets that you can’t use, and you’ll get paid for sales you complete. You can set your own price and adjust it as you see fit. Buyers won’t be bothered with individual sellers contacting them while buyers won’t have to worry about getting in touch with buyers – that’s StubHub’s job.

Avoiding scalpers (and not resorting to becoming one yourself) and going with a reputable, brand-name secondary exchange is definitely a smart choice. And you can do it from the privacy of your own home or wherever you want actually. They’ve got a free, handy dandy mobile app for iPhone an Android.

Lord Nelson Gets a New Hat for Hatwalk “Surprise”

DSC_5526

Last week, I got an email inviting me to an early Monday morning sneak peek press briefing of a “fresh and ingenious … iconic moment for this Summer Like No Other … inspired by some of Britain’s greatest visionaries from the world of fashion and design.” So I got up a little earlier than usual and headed to Trafalgar Square for the peek, only to find somebody’d put a funny hat on top of Lord Nelson (you know the stoic dude atop Nelson’s Column with the lion’s surrounding its base?) and other statues of very serious and important looking dudes around the square.

DSC_5543

Fine. Commissioned by the Mayor of London, in partnership with BT, Grazia magazine, the British Fashion Council and the London 2012 Festival, the cheeky make over is part of a “visual spectacular” called Hatwalk, which sees 21 stalwart statues around town be-hatted (Queen Victoria, Shakespeare, Roosevelt …). Click here for the Hatwalk map.

I’m all for irreverence, and I guess I like this idea. The Trafalgar Square hat thingy amused me and probably brightened up and will continue to add a bit of fun to some otherwise mundane moments. But when I showed up for my Monday morning “surprise” my first reaction was to ask myself why had I even bothered getting up for this and how seriously should I take futures press releases from the sender who had invited me. I also wondered to myself if my initial response would have been a lot different if this had a Banksy-style stunt pulled off by some street artists. Maybe I’m just cynical and have become inured to such gimmicks.

Also, If someone had travelled all the way to London from who knows where (and to be sure there are a whole heap of tourists in town right now), would that visitor have been even as amused as a smirking local yocal like me or would they have been bummed to find the opportunity to see Nelson’s Column or whatever other monument had been co-opted by the Mayor’s corporate Hatwalk fashionistas? Or would a patriotic Brit take rightful offence to having such heroes glammed up and clowned down for the sake of publicity and to divert attention away from more pertinent news stories?

Come to your own conclusions. Find out much more at molpresents/hatwalk.

Wine of the Month: Bouchard Aine & Fils, Beaune, Clos du Roi, Cuvee Signature 2009

Wine of the Month: Bouchard Aine & Fils, Beaune, Clos du Roi, Cuvee Signature 2009 - DSC01162

Wow. Earthy onion soup bouquet (like you wish your mom used to make for you). Cherry and black currant depth on the tongue, followed by a rich licorice aftertaste. Bouchard Aine & Fils, Beaune, Clos du Roi, Cuvee Signature 2009 (another from my epically delectable visit to Burgundy) is a broodingly dark, medium bodied, 100% pinot noir that is to be savoured whether drinking on its own or with a strong cheese and meaty meats (I think it’d be swell served with a big, fat, juicy cheeseburger).

I was fine wine slumming it last night, enjoying a few glasses of this sweet and savoury WOTM selection with a too-lazy-to-cook assemblage of nibbles. Almonds to start, a bowl of home made macaroni and (leftovers chunks of) cheese for my “main” and a milk chocolate bar as dessert: nothing special. But, with a glass of this noble premiere cru crashing my Saturday evening laze-fest, even such a sad supper seemed somewhat refined.

Only regret from slurping this Bourgogne baby last night: I can only imagine with time this wine will get better and better and better. Grabbing as many bottles of this premium wine as possible and stowing ’em away till the end of the decade would be a very wise idea.

Digging around on the web, it appears the Clos du Roi range is easy enough to purchase online … in the States, anyway, for 35 to 40 bucks. It ain’t nearly as simple to find an outlet here in Britain. Wherever you are, if you can get ahold of Bouchard Aine & Fils, Beaune, Clos du Roi, Cuvee Signature 2009, I recommend it. And if you come across a retailer here in London, lemme me!

Get Out of Town and Visit a Park Resort

Capelulo

As much as I love jetting off to exotic destinations, I’ve come to dread queueing up at airports and sometimes I come back from a trip abroad more exhausted than I was before I left. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not retiring my flight jacket any time soon, but the prospect of getting out of town without having to deal with airports, currency exchanges and whatever else the travel gods can throw at me certainly has its appeal.

And as pro-London as I truly am, sometimes I just need to get the f*ck out of this town. The same bright lights/big city aura that thrills me with the prospect of never ending opportunities for fun and enterprise can also grate on my very last nerve. Traffic, stuffy Tubes, paying way too much for everything … ugh.

I guess it’s not so difficult for me to hit the road (or more likely the rails) every once in awhile for a weekend away or a mini-break. The English countryside and seaside, even just a short jaunt out from London, offer restorative reprieves from the urban grind. But, I imagine the same sort of easy peasy getaway can be a toughie if you’ve got kids. One option is to give the Parkdean holiday parks a go. Yes, if you’re looking for somewhere affordable and fun for the whole family that’s reputable, safe and beautiful, you should definitely try out one of these park resorts.

Parkdean is a UK focused self catering Holiday Park operator with 24 holiday parks. They have 15 parks in Southwest England, six in Scotland, two in South Wales and one in Norfolk. They’ve got a good reputation too. The British Travel Awards, the largest awards programme in the UK for travel companies, has awarded Parkdean “Best UK Holiday Park Operator” for the second consecutive year.

As the BTA sets the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the UK travel industry, such an award serves to illustrate Parkdean’s commitment to providing its guests with a hassle free stay and delivering the sort of holiday experience families seek.

Yeah.

2012-07-28-0565(0)(0)(0)

What a day!

I guess, technically, it’s now tomorrow. But I’m still up and want revel in this fantastic day just a teensy bit more before heading off to bed.

My morning started off like any other. I managed to sleep in a little later than usual though, and that was really nice. Then checking my inbox over coffee, an especially tasty message appeared with “Invitation to Parma Press Trip” in the subject line. As you might very well imagine, I opened the email and replied back to it speedily – something along the lines of “Um yes please” was pretty how that response went. So stoked.

The rest of the day was spent whittling away (with some actual efficiency) at a workload that included doing research into dishwasher reviews. Did you that only two in five UK households have a dishwasher, compared to 2 out of 3 in European countries? But Brits are rapidly catching up, with a quarter of a million households choosing the machine option every year. Fascinating stuff. Nonetheless, I don’t even know what to tell people I do for a living sometimes. But, hey, I’m still having fun and haven’t skipped a beat yet.

Of course, the biggest thrill was watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Danny Boyle did his country proud with that one. And … oh yeah … up yours, Mitt Romney.

The ceremony was especially awesome for me to watch as my girlfriend was actually in the show operating one of the puppets in the Voldemort/nightmare scene. She’s amazing and had worked so hard preparing to for her brief moment entertaining an estimated audience of four billion people. She rocks!

Anyway, I’m just winding down after a particularly pleasant day. I’ll stop bragging now.

DSC_5316

Show some love for your side of town and be in with a chance to win a Westfield shopping spree and more.

Which do you prefer? Westfield Stratford City (an official London 2012 provider and the gateway into the London 2012 Olympic Park) or the rather more lux and established Westfield London? A new Westfield competition pitting “Team East” against “Team West” offers a fashionable take on ye olde East v West battle for supremacy. But whichever shopping centre comes out on top, ordinary folks like you and me are the ones who’ll be the real winners.

Join in on Westfield’s fun and friendly #iwasthere rivalry to show your East/West pride and even share your very own “I was there” story by signing up to Team East or Team West. Once signed up (don’t worry it’s free), you’ll become part of a team representing your side of town. Any pics, tweets and videos tagged #IWASTHERE will become part of a hub of content representing East or West London. Plus by joining, you’ll automatically enter into a pretty sweet prize draw. More than £25,000 Visa prepaid cards to spend at Westfield are up for grabs as well as London 2012 and Team GB merchandise.

Camden Lock Market: Now Open Thursday Nights Through the Summer

DSC_5505

Seems like a big no duh to me, but finally all these great London street market folks are starting to wise up to the fact that most people actually work during the day but might enjoy visiting local markets (or even a market elsewhere in town if there was something particularly yummy on offer) if they were still open when folks got home from work. Such an extended shopping hours idea is an especially no brainer way to make much more money that otherwise during the long daylight hours of summer.

So, Camden Lock Market launched a night market last night that’ll run every Thursday for the next six weeks.

It’s pretty much the same old Camden Lock Market you may already love or hate but with cool breezes, a pretty twilight evening sky, live music, fewer weekender types and probably far fewer tourists. Find out more at camdenlockmarket.com.
