Hunt for Giant Fabergé Easter Eggs Across London (CheapOair)

The Big Egg Hunt is a plan hatched by two charities, Elephant Family and Action for Children. The goal is to get people involved in a record breaking egg hunt across Central London and to help raise money for and awareness of these two “egg-cellent” causes.

Lonely Planet Street Food Festival

DSC_7890

I popped round to the Lonely Planet Street Food Festival last night at Village Underground in Shoreditch. The event was to celebrate the launch of Lonely Planet’s latest title, The World’s Best Street Food. There were London based street vendors of various international backgrounds cooking up recipes from the book. All the food was pretty good, but only one thing really blew me away: the jerked pork served up by traditional Caribbean food folk, Rummanco. I grabbed a copy of the book while there. The recipes vary from easy to complex and at least a few look well worth trying.

Bright neon lights, fat American tourists and lots and lots of booze? Are we in Vegas? Not quite: welcome to downtown Nashville, y’all, where southern hospitality is alive and well. Beyond the neon glow and the cheap-ass souvenir shops, downtown Nashville offers a hyped-up hillbilly paradise of all day/all night partying replete with free musical entertainment and gorgeously greasy food.

Lordy Lordy, I’m Turnin’ 40!

Tikichris in Roadrunner's Rock & Motor Club

I turn 40 in less than a week. Compared to some other folk I know who’ve already topped that proverbial hill, I think I’m rather blasé about hitting the big 4-O. Still it’s a pretty ponderous milestone for anyone and has me thinking a lot about how my life’s turned out.

So far so good really. Of course, I wish I was making a lot more money and that my “career” was a little further along. And I would be significantly happier if I could provide more for my girlfriend, family, close friends and a few worthy causes. But generally speaking, I’m quite content with how everything seems to be going. I love where I live, I love whom I’m living with and, most of the time, I really love what I’m doing. I reckon I’m extremely lucky.

In many ways life is so much more fulfilling than I ever could have imagined. Maybe I’ve set the bar too low? Finding the front seat at the top of a double decker bus still gives me a bit of a thrill.

However, life has hardly played out as I imagined it would have when I was a little kid (I’m not a pinball wizard living in a bachelor pad above a pizzeria/arcade nor was I ever) … or as I suffered through my teenage years (I haven’t hitchhiked in ages or put a bottle of peroxide anywhere near my dwindling head o’ hair and sadly I rarely play my guitar these days). In fact, life isn’t even like I imagined it would be two years ago. It’s actually way more wonderful than I ever could have guessed.

Anyway, 40 years of living leads to at least a little bit of wisdom accumulated. The gist of it all seems to be the following: Less is often more; hype is usually just that: and doing what you enjoy best is probably what you should be doing anyway. Indulge me as I share some lessons learned over four decades of me.

The happiest people I’ve ever met live in extreme poverty. Those same people are also the ones with the most integrity. That said, a few of the most modest and unassuming people I know are also ridiculously wealthy and financially successful.

Some of the best meals I’ve had have been served on paper plates, in paper bags or in cardboard boxes. Please note that I only said some. The vast majority of ‘best’ meals I’ve eaten have been made by family or friends. And I’ve yet to find many foods that are as satisfying as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

A bed that costs several thousand pounds isn’t all that more comfortable than beds worth only a few hundred quid.

There’s a fine line between being a hack and living a poetic life.

Getting paid to write about whatever the hell I want feels like a dream come true.

I’ll stop here but could ramble on and on. What about you? Got any smart stuff to share?

Puma Relaunch, Carnaby Street

DSC_7720

I was invited to the re-opening of Puma‘s flagship shop on Carnaby Street. For the event, they threw “The PUMA Tea Party” and transformed corners of the sleek, Euro-vibrant shoe store into a dainty, vintage tea shop. It’s was a pretty clever idea and fun to see stylish athletic types hawking fashionable footwear mingling with retro garbed waitresses serving tea and cupcakes.

A journey by train from London and Amsterdam starts at London’s St Pancras International Station where you hop on the London to Brussels route of the Eurostar. The Eurostar gets you across the Channel (via the underground “Chunnel”) from the island of Britain onto continental Europe. After that, you’ll need to change trains in Brussels onto a Thalys train for the rest of the trip to Amsterdam. Thalys is a joint rail service offered by Belgian, French, Dutch and German railways.

The recipe’s ingredients are pretty basic, a good number of which you probably already have in your home. Plus, the recipe includes two kinds of pork! Unsmoked bacon and a whole lot of lardons. There’s chicken stock too. And did I mention the health benefits of a diet rich in lentils and other pulses?

Wine of the Month: 2010 La Cadène, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Domaine Chaume Arnaud

DSC_7468

A mostly good but very long week rolled up to a quiet Friday night at home. Having this Côtes du Rhône white in the fridge was a relief. A simple but satisfying mozzarella salad, some taramosalata on toast and a heaping helping of decompressing convo later (thanks Kemey!) and my weekend was officially off to a tasty and relaxing start.

Yeah, the 2010 La Cadène, Côtes du Rhône Villages, Domaine Chaume Arnaud is a Friday night sort of wine. At £15.95 a bottle (or £11.77 per unsplit orders of 12 for a total of £141.24), it should be a somewhat special but not necessarily precious Friday night as well. I suppose such evenings are easy enough to come by. If only complex but fruitfully harmonious, medium bodied quaffs were so readily available. It’s certainly reassuring to know this “who’s who of Mediterranean white varieties” (Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Clairette, Bourboulenc and Picpoul) is out there on the market.

On the cusp of getting full biodynamic certification, Domaine Chaume Arnaud is doing neato and commendable stuff and receiving impressive accolades for the effort. To the best my palate can perceive, the 2010 La Cadène is representative of what’s going on down at the domaine.
