Get Work Related Qualifications at Your Own Time and Pace
BTECs are vocational and work-related qualifications undertaken in vocational subjects ranging from Business studies to Engineering. BTECs are equivalent to other qualifications such as the GCSE (levels 1 to 2), A Level (level 3) and university degrees (levels 4 to 7) and are designed to accommodate the needs of employers while still allowing for the student to further his or her education. Examples of BTEC courses include Health & Social Care, Business Studies, Engineering, Science, Information Technology, Media Studies, Travel & Tourism and Performing Arts.
“BTEC” stands for Business and Technology Education Council. The council was formed back in 1984 from the Business Education Council (BEC) and the Technician Education Council (TEC). Then in 1996, BTEC merged with (deep breath) the University of London Examinations & Assessment Council (ULEAC) to form Edexcel. Today BTEC qualifications are awarded by the Edexcel exam board and are taken in more than 100 countries at all levels, from pre-GCSE to degree equivalent.
That’s a whole lot of blah blah blah to get to my point of saying these qualifications seem like a good idea if you’re trying to get an edge on the competition or switch over to a new career. BTECs focus on building practical skills which can be more easily transposed to the work place and in some cases are actually preferred by employers over academic qualifications because folks with a BTEC under their belt tend to be better equipped for the so called real world.
Of course, if you really are trying to stand out from the rest of the pack or do something completely different for your livelihood, you’re probably already strapped for time and having to sit in on a regularly scheduled class might not work for you. Luckily ICS offers an impressive range of BTEC courses “at your finger tips” via distance learning. Distance learning with ICS enables you to learn and your own time and pace to achieve your goals on your terms. Often you can spread the cost of your studies as well. So, you can keep the job, keep paying the bills and keep improving your skills and broaden your horizon.

Mike Ballard @ Arch 402 Gallery London (Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art)
Students of mfa degree recommend that you check out Mike Ballard’s work…. like frozen explosions or odd cultural blooms, the works (especially the collages) distort scale and mess with depth to “destabilise our sense of place.”

Curiocity, Issue B: London, the Zoo
Perhaps a case of form over function, but the form is nevertheless a lot of fun and at the very least innocuous – Curiocity is a new map/magazine “for London” offering “unexpected ideas for journeys and encounters around the capital.”
I got a copy of the second issue of this zine sent compliments of the editors, Henry Eliot and Matt Lloyd. Folded up neatly into a pocket-sized little pamphlet, it was a bit of a treat when it arrived in the post all tiny-like and then even more so when I unfurled it for my initial look-see.
The theme for “Issue B” is London as a zoo and features a central full page map of an “alternative London Zoo with unusual animals plotted across the capital” on one side and a ton o’ quirky London facts on the other. I actually learned a thing or two giving Curiocity a read and even cracked a smile a couple of times. Sorry though, no spoilers. Get your own copy!
The magazine is available to buy online and at a handful of rather reputable stockists (Stanford’s, Wellcome Collection, ICA, Rough Trade East, the British Library, Daunt Books, Gosh! Comics and Foyles). And a copy only costs a measly £2. It’s well worth that. For such a wee publication it’s packed full of interesting tidbits, cool things to do and plenty of quirk. I reckon a copy would make a sweet little gift for someone or just a nice little pick-me-up for yourself.

Happy Ending/New Beginning for Winston (Thanks Celia Hammond!)
Kemey and I brought a cat into our home about two months ago. His name is Winston. He’s a Norwegian Forest Cat and the coolest little fluffy companion ever. We were introduced to him at Celia Hammond Animal Trust (the Canning Town location), and he’s been a vital member of our household ever since.
I’m just writing this post to highlight the important work that Celia Hammond does. The Celia Hammond Animal Trust deserves your attention and donations. If you’re looking for a pet, please at least consider having a look at the animals there who are in need of homes.
I also thought it would be fun to show off the sweet message Kemey sent to the CH folks (above image). It’s been posted on the shelter’s Happy Endings webpage.

These are a Few of My Favourite PDO Things (Great British Chefs)
Parma ham should be from Parma and made to certain specifications. Otherwise, it’s just Parma-like or Parma-style. Same goes for Parmigiano-Reggiano, Burgundy, Douro and Port. Fair enough.

Review: The King’s Speech at Wyndham’s Theatre
The original play that inspired the Oscar winning film is now on stage in London. And if you liked the screen adaptation of The King’s Speech, there’s a very good chance you’ll love the play. The two are very different beasts though, and I suppose the most succinct way of distinguishing the two is to say that the play is more potent and less polite.
Didn’t see the movie? That’s okay. The play’s probably a more thorough and entertaining foray into how the Duke Of York became King George VI with a lot of help along the way from speech therapist Lionel Logue … and how the two men came to understand each other and be friends. Compared to the movie, the play delves deeper into the King’s background, his relationship with his brother and the political landscape of his day.
I caught a performance of The King’s Speech last night and left the theatre feeling uplifted and completely pleased to have spent an evening out watching a show. And that’s how the play proves to me it’s a winner. For someone like me to walk away actually giving a damn about the trials and tribulations of some privileged royal says a lot. The story as it’s presented taps into the same archetypal stuff of fairy tales: a prince transforms into a king with the aid of a magician (in this case, his speech therapist). We can all take from that the lessons of believing in ourselves and not letting pride get in the way of tackling our problems and confronting our fears.
Charles Edwards, as the King, gives a stellar performance, though there may be room to improve on his character arc. It doesn’t seem all that much of a stretch for his character to shake his stammering uncertainties and get on to the business of being a leader. He comes across as already rather ‘kingly’ from the start. Maybe the element of surprise just wasn’t there as I already knew the story too well and had the ending figured out well before I even took my seat?
All members of the cast give good show. The set is minimal, functional and elegant. The lighting is amazing. I loved how certain aromas were introduced (was that intentional?) at certain times to help establish mood.
The King’s Speech is on now at Wyndham’s Theatre, Charing Cross Road (near Leicester Square Station), London, WC2H 0DA with booking open until 21 July 2012.
