Attractive, massive and rather noisy multi-storey bar and restaurant, The Drift, occupies a bespoke space at the base of Heron Tower (the city’s tallest building). If you like the clean lines of Heron, you’ll probably think favourably of this new eaterie but could be put off by its shabby chic nautical(ish) themed furnishings.

Mega City Photo Exhibition: Call for Photographers
I’m curating Mega City Photo, a street photography exhibition at Leeds College of Art. The show is to open in early 2012 in a new gallery space at the college, and – at the moment – I’m still accepting submission. More about the exhibition and the 26 cities to be featured in the show listed below.
Mega City Photo
Some time over the past few years, the world’s population shifted from being mostly rural to mostly urban.
This global move from countryside to cityscape created urban environments the likes of which have never been experienced – at least not on the scale now witnessed – and gave rise to the modern phenomenon of the mega city.
The United Nations defines a mega city as an “urban agglomeration with ten million inhabitants or more”. In 1950, the world had but two population centres fitting that bill: New York and Tokyo. A quarter century later only one other metropolis, Mexico City, was added to the list. Then from 1975 to 2000, 15 more cities grew to have populations greater than ten million. Today, there are an estimated 26 agglomerations with at least ten million inhabitants.
Mega City Photo seeks to exhibit professional and amateur street photographs which examine the conditions inherent to life in the 21st century mega city:
- disparity between rich and poor;
- the juxtaposition of traditional folkways and contemporary urban life;
- the overwhelming crush of millions of people living in shared urban spaces;
- alienation versus new ways for city dwellers to connect and communicate in the digital age; and
- the effects, ramifications and opportunities caused by mega cities, globalization and increased world travel.
Mega City Photo will be exhibited at Leeds College of Art January to February 2012.

Eco Trim
I learned a new term watching the above clip. Eco trim. Nice one, eh? Eco trim essentially refers to all the energy efficient eco technology bits developed for today’s cars. I also learned that CO2 emissions ain’t nowhere near as bad as it used to be (but we’ve still got a long way to go). According to the vid, no matter which new car you purchase (whether we’re talking eco cars or otherwise) it’s likely to be much greener than whatever you were driving before. The Ford C-Max is a great example of a car on the market today that’s a particularly deep shade of green. With so much focus on the expense of electric and hybrid cars it’s good to realize that the majority of new cars are greener than the ones they replace. Buying a new car these days with a clear conscience can be a simple case of figuring out which shade of green you want to be.

Following a multi-million pound investment, Grade II listed Northumberland House near Trafalgar Square has been completely restored and reopened to the public. The Italian inspired building dates back to 1887 when it was first opened as the 500 guest room Grand Hotel. Home to the Ministry of Defence during World War II and then (after years left empty) student accommodations for LSE, the building now hosts two luxury hotels, two restaurants and a private members club for business folk.

Jeep People
To celebrate its 70th anniversary, JEEP is launching a new online portal www.jeep-people.com for its fans. The site consists of three sections:
- A section dedicated to the history of Jeep;
- another dedicated to “Jeep-people” – Just Enthusiastic Engage People who live with passion and believe they have a “J factor” to express and want to talk about; and
- a third dedicated to sharing amazing adventures such as those of Italian athlete Alex Bellini as he competes in the LA – NY Footrace 2011.
The folks at Jeep see Alex as the perfect example of someone having plenty of “J factor” – passionate with love of freedom and adventure and strong sense of authenticity. By choosing to sponsor him and follow his progress the LA – NY race, Jeep confirms its commitment to sports and outdoors activity. The LA – NY Footrace 2011 started last month. The cross country competition covers a total of 5000 km and lasts until 27 August. More than just a sporting competition, such a challenge tests the physical and mental endurance of those participating. Keeping pace with Alex is his support team Jeep ® Wrangler Unlimited Sahara equipped with the powerful 3.8 V6 petrol engine from 199hp and four-speed automatic transmission. Personally, I think I’d rather be in the Jeep than in the foot race. But major respect goes to Alex – and anybody even attempting such an endeavor – for giving this race a go!
Beyond and after Bellini’s efforts in the LA – NY Footrace, Jeep’s new website promises to continue to be a great place for “Jeep-people” to meet. I think it’s a site worth checking out. Both my older brother and my dad owned Jeeps when I was a kid – and I thought they (my bro, my dad and the Jeeps) were just the coolest things. Never had one myself. But I did once have a job that had me using the boss’s to make delivers. It was a smooth ride. There’s something about a Jeep that’s just a little cooler, tougher and more rugged than most other cars.

Senit/Through the Rain
“Through the rain” is the new single by Eritrean-Italian pop star, Senit. The song is in English, has an upbeat tempo and is passionately performed. It’s pretty catchy too. The release of “Through the Rain” follows the publication of the singer’s ballad “Stand By” – which Senit performed representing San Marino at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest and comes ahead of her fourth studio album, due out at the end of this year.
Born in Bologna, Senit has been in productions of The Lion King, Fame and Hair in Germany and Switzerland and has been recording music as a solo artist since 2006. Her first singles in English started coming out in 09. That same year, she performed at a festival in Asmara, Eritrea where she (according to the bio on her official website) got the opportunity to “live and interact with Eritrean artists from all over the world. Here again Senit showed her ability of being a no-limit artist, her voice was appreciated not only in Europe but also in Africa, a country which is, geographically speaking, very far from Italy but, in spite of that, very interested in an artist who is undoubtedly talented from a singing point of view”.
I think it’s cool to see a new up-and-comer emerging who doesn’t quite fit the same old pop star mold. As she moves to capture a more global audience beyond her Italian home and East African roots, it will be interesting to see how Senit is accepted by listeners abroad. Obviously (and thankfully) not another Britney, Senit has an impressive voice and a lot of drive. We shall see! Until then, “Through the Rain” is available from the iTunes Store and other digital platforms for digital download right now.
