Yu-foria

Maybe if you cross your fingers, touch wood and scrunch your face up like you really really really want summer to return, it will. And when it does, a nice way to cool off would be to try some of Yu-foria’s frozen yoghurt. The shop’s just opened recently at Covent Garden (downstairs near the pesky opera singing buskers).

Starbucks VIA Ready Brew

When the peeps from Starbucks contacted me about giving their new VIA Ready Brew (their version of instant coffee) a try, I said sure (snickering under my breath because I didn’t think they had any idea what kind of negative review shit storm they might be brewing up by offering me a sample of their new product).

Oh Sure, Sean Connery’s in the Loo But Where’s the Frickin’ WiFi!!!???
Qype does London, July 4th 2009

Edinburgh - June 2009

I stayed at the Balmoral. Grand structure, historic hotel, exceptionally friendly and helpful staff, more than decent bar, lovely spa, nice room (with a rather swank loo featuring a brilliantly cheeky photo of Sean Connery and a beach going lady friend) and an almost ideal location for exploring the best of this dynamic city (and visiting one of my all-time favourite restaurants!). I’d be happy to recommend it but … they charge their guests for internet service … and there’s no WiFi in the rooms (only in the public areas … where it still isn’t free to access).

Review: The Pandas/You are the Weather

I tend to steer clear of music reviews. Despite being a music snob with very strong opinions, I just don’t care to blather on about the subject. There are plenty of other folks out there willing to share their two cents about their musical tastes. Besides, I already blather on (and on) about enough things as it is.  However, when the only person that’s ever had the pleasure of getting kicked out of a third world country with yours truly sends me his band’s latest release, well, I kinda feel obliged to spread the word.

The person?  Luis Fraire – drummer, drum machine programmer, sampler and visual mixer for the Massachusetts based instrumental band, the Pandas. The country? Mozambique (where about twelve years ago, good ole Louie and I found ourselves with one way bus tickets to South Africa due to … um … buy me a beer sometime and I’ll tell ya the whole goofy story).  What I will share now is my memories of our last days in Mozambique and the subsequent weeks bumbling through South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe:  we were always playing music. It was Louie’s passion. It was my hope – and assumption – that he would continue making it, and I’m so pleased that he still does.

The Pandas are a four piece. Their music is spare, but I wouldn’t call it minimal. Maximal seems a better description: soundscape-y and textured, experimental and ambient but with enough pop sensibility to keep the songs in check. Their music ranks among the ultimate background music in my collection. But I assure you that it’s exceptional foreground music also.

You are the Weather is the third batch of songs by the Pandas. Their last effort, Solutions, was certainly solid and thoroughly enjoyable but I think I like this new release a little more.  The roughly 45 minutes of music which comprise You are the Weather has provided the perfect inflight entertainment for a handful of recent flights I’ve taken. Listening to these engaging songs while gazing upon the Alps from one’s window seat is a wonderful experience.

Give the Pandas a listen (AND BUY THEIR MUSIC!) at www.pandaphonics.com. You’ll be glad you did.

Review: Ideas Exchange at Hoxton Apprentice with Prue Leith (Londonist)

Review: Ideas Exchange at Hoxton Apprentice with Prue Leith
Londonist, June 30, 2009 2:18 PM

Discussing the ramifications of a fattening society with no fat folk at the table in Hoxton Apprentice’s classy upscale dining space and consuming a delicious (albeit light) three course dinner felt mildly reprehensible. However, consciences were somewhat salved by the fact that the Hoxton Apprentice is a charity restaurant and all profit goes straight back into training and development.

Tapas Fantasticas 2009

When we previewed Tapas Fantasticas a few days back, we based our expectations upon the good time we had last year. Well, it appears that the folks organizing Tapas Fantasticas raised their own (tapas) bar so high that they were unable to achieve the same level of fun experienced in 08.

Wine Sampling at Carluccio's

Among the offerings, the Planeta Alastro (a fruity Grecanico/Chardonnay blend – £12.50 for a bottle) was especially easy to drink; indeed, the evening started and ended with this one. Along the way, a few glasses of Planeta Ceresulo (Nero D’Avola/Frappato blend – £12.50 for a bottle) masterfully accompanied a plate of pasta con funghi (egg pappardelle with a mix of shitake, oyster, porcini and button mushrooms – £6.95) while a velvety Carthago Mandrarossa (Nero D’Avola – £15.95 for a bottle) did nothing to diminish the fegato e patate (pan fried calf’s liver with red onion jam and sautéed rosemary potatoes – £11.75).

Red State: Excess and Despair in the American South (Juxtapoz)

Katie Zuppann, web editor for Juxtapoz, was kind enough to post the folllowing piece about my upcoming photography exhibition in Leeds. Thanks Katie!

Red State: Excess and Despair in the American South
Juxtapoz, Friday, 26 June 2009

Juxtapoz contributing photographer Chris Osburn does a whole lot more than cover the UK art scene for us … Earlier this year, he returned to his hometown to see how the Deep South was shaping up in the new era ushered in by the election of the first black President of the USA. Now Osburn will be showing off his photos taken during that journey in an exhibit … at the Leeds College of Art from June 29th thru September 11, 2009.

American photojournalist Chris Osburn was born in Chickamauga, Georgia and although he’s now based in London, his homeland is never far from his thoughts, prompting a return visit in the early part of 2009 to see how the Deep South was shaping up in the new era ushered in by the election of the first black President of the USA.

Pilpel Falafel and Houmous Bar Opening in Spitalfields

“Chickpea muncher” Uri Dinay, owner of Pilpel, took the lessons (and the 60 year old falafel recipe) he learned from his grandfather for inspiration … Based upon last night’s sample of Pilpel’s menu, we reckon lots of other folks will find inspiration in this food, especially considering the more than decent prices they’ll pay for it.

Bulldog Gin at Coco de Mer

Bulldog Gin invited Londonist to tag along to their cocktail party last night at the Brompton Cross location of erotic boutique Coco de Mer for ”an evening dedicated to the art of aphrodisiacs.” Sipping gin cocktails and talking dirty in a fancy schmancy lingerie shop in South Ken? Sounds like just the fodder for a Londonist post!
