Restaurant Review: Satsuma (Londonist)

Restaurant Review: Satsuma
Londonist, June 12, 2009 12:16 PM

Londonist was recently invited along to a press lunch at Soho Japanese restaurant Satsuma. We had the Satsuma Bento, which at £16.90, filled us up with salmon and tuna sashimi with chicken yakitori, prawn katsu, vegetable roll and seafood salad. One of eight savoury sounding bento options, it was certainly delicious and more than ample but …

Cuban Cigar Walk in London

Cities in Sound’s Cuban Cigar Walk audio tour is an excellent way to experience London. For a resident like me, the tour provided fresh insight to the place I’ve called home since 2001. For tourists, the walk is a great way to get acquainted with London at one’s own pace. History buffs in particular should find this tour worthwhile (as well as some of the other dozen or so tours offered). And as the name implies, the walk is a dream for cigar smokers.

Lazarides Rathbone (Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art)

Lazarides Rathbone
Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art, June 2009

Opening Night at Lazarides Rathbone

When all the proverbial chips are proverbially down, there’s still art: massive, glorious, in-your-face art. Indeed, with the recent opening of the new flagship Lazarides gallery in London’s trendily up-market district of Fitzrovia, the proverbs of today’s economic calamity have been turned inside out, as this new Lazarides Rathbone confirms the gallery’s continued commitment to examining its maxim of excess and abandon with unceasing fervor.

Noah Scalin/AFTER LIFE: A Skull Exhibition at Quirk Gallery in Richmond, Virginia

If I were going to be anywhere even remotely near Richmond, Virginia this summer, I’d do my darnedest to check out Skull-A-Day originator Noah Scalin’s AFTER LIFE: A Skull Exhibition showing from July 3rd until August 22nd at Quirk Gallery.

The show will feature many of Noah’s original 365.25 skulls, plus several new works, and will be the first time any of these pieces will be for sale.  There will be several events associated with the exhibition, including a book signing and tea party for the closing. Check the Quirk Gallery’s website for contact details.

Der Sommer ist da … It Sounds Awesome and Features My Photography!

Um, this release – featuring my photography as the cover art (neato!) – has been out for months and now that summer is actually here I suppose it’s time I write something about it!

Der Sommer ist da (Kahuna Kawentzmann)

The song, Der Sommer ist da (Summer is Here), is a smooth and incredibly relaxing tune by Berlin-based exotic guitarist Kahuna Kawentzmann. It’s a lush piece of music and the perfect accompaniment for a tropical cocktail (aaahhh). And the guitars have a reverb-y wonder to ‘em that you really ought to give a listen to! Needless to say, I’m stoked to have my pic associated with this music. Says the Kahuna of the song:

… while working on the music in late summer, I took an afternoon walk. After a lengthy, rainy spell the sun was shining for a couple of days. I just had discovered the productive quietness of my new home, but the sunshine also made me nostalgic for the lively part of town, which I had left behind in spring. Sure I could have spent the evening in another quarter to celebrate the last sunrays. But no. For the first time in what feels like decades, I had lyrics in my head, and they went together with a current melody.

… and about my photography:

I had seen it in January 2007 on the blog of the London-based Tikiphile and secured it right away for my next release. The picture says so much and is stylistically immaculate. It even featured the block-like geometry of certain 1960s lp-layouts. It’s just perfect. There are naked people even! Back then I was still thinking about an album (crazy, isn’t it?), but after another summer had passed it dawned on me that the photograph fits Der Sommer ist da (Summer is Here) like a glove.

Der Sommer ist da is available via Payloadz (which gets you a copy of the cover-PDF), iTunes, Amazon and as a free download from the Exotic Blog of Kahuna Kawentzmann as well. More info available from the Kahuna Kawentzmann website.

Searching Central London for Traditional English Food with Pied a Terre's David Moore

When May Yee (one half of the Fortylove “digital postcards” project) got in touch to see if I’d like to tag along with her and restaurateur David Moore (one half of the Pied à Terre restaurant world) for a prowl about central London in search of traditional English foods, how could I say no? Any opportunity to see May in action (her Fortylove site is a real gem – check it out) and to glean some London dining advice from such an in-the-know and successful gourmand as David Moore was bound to be nothing short of a proper and fun education.

Review: Lobsterfest at Belgo (Londonist)

Review: Lobsterfest at Belgo
Londonist, June 4, 2009 4:42 PM

Londonist recently got invited over to Belgo Centraal to sample its Lobsterfest menu. In general, we’re not quite sure what to think about the wacky Belgo franchise but suppose its Centraal location is innocuous enough tucked away there on Earlham Street. Besides, we’re happy to give it up for any restaurant that makes its wait staff dress up like Trappist monks. We approve the list of Belgian beers too.

Olympic Park Tour, Take Two

Olympic Park - June 2009

Whether you’re pro-2012 or think the Olympics in London is going to be the biggest mess in UK history (my views fluctuate somewhere in between, but I have to say that I’m certainly keen to watch as the Olympic plans unfold), the sneak preview of the Hyde Park-sized building site is well worth your time. The downside to the tour is that you’re stuck in a bus with dirty windows for the full duration of the tour. Still, the guides come across as well informed, and the route taken is thoughtfully designed with stops at decent vantage points along the way.

(P)review: Whatever Happened to the Men of Tomorrow? Slinkachu at Andipa Gallery (Londonist)

(P)review: Whatever Happened to the Men of Tomorrow? Slinkachu at Andipa Gallery
Londonist, June 4, 2009 9:54 AM

Whatever happened to the men of tomorrow? Judging from the photos in the Slinkachu solo exhibition at Andipa Gallery, they got decrepitly old and shrunk to an exceptionally miniscule size. We’re talking pinkie nail size. Tiny. Borrowing a title from Alan Moore, London micro street artist Slinkachu’s new show explores his “trademark themes of loneliness and disillusionment engendered by the urban environment.” Known for his one inch mini-installations placed on London streets and left to be discovered by passers-by, Slinkachu has turned the camera on his works for this exhibition, allowing viewers to contemplate his poignant message without getting hit by a bus.

Visiting Jon Burgerman in Nottingham

An assignment for Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art led me to Nottingham last week for an in studio interview and shoot with prolific self-described doodler, Jon Burgerman. I don’t wanna give away too much from that session (you’re just gonna have to wait for the Whitehot piece at the beginning of July!), but as a fan of Jon’s work I was a gleeful eyed scamp getting to meet this Miro-meets-the-Simpsons artist and being allowed free rein to take a zillion pics in his workspace.
