Exclusive Interview with Usugrow (Juxtapoz)
Exclusive Interview with Usugrow
Juxtapoz, Thursday 23 July 2009

We were influenced by graffiti, skate, punk rock and hip-hop. Those cultures were spread to Japan in the 70s. We are the second generation of people influenced from them. When we started creating our art, we began to consider mixing not only those influences but also Japanese culture with the work. The Shinganist exhibition is my way of introducing our style to the world.

Del Aziz Opening at Bermondsey Square
Londonist, July 23, 2009 10:28 AM
With this new Del’Aziz, Comptoir Libanais, Pilpel and other related food outlets popping up here and there throughout town, it can’t help but be wondered if London is experiencing something of a Middle Eastern food renaissance? So far, everything we’ve sampled in the way of nouveau hummus, falafel, mezze treats has been delish! Keep it coming!

Chefspective: Interview with Anirudh Arora of Moti Mahal (Londonist)
Chefspective: Interview with Anirudh Arora of Moti Mahal
Londonist, July 22, 2009 2:26 PM

We like Moti Mahal. A lot! Beyond the fact that this upscale modern restaurant serves some of the best South Asian and Indian food we’ve tried in Central London, Moti Mahal has repeatedly wowed us with innovative tasting menus (apple chutney anyone?) and events (from wine pairing to Bollywood dancing). With the launch of a new Grand Trunk Road menu, we thought this might be a brilliant chance to stop extolling Moti Mahal’s virtues and simply find out from head chef Anirudh Arora his take on the new menu and his experiences as a chef.

Review: Art of Good Taste Masterclass at Camino
Londonist, July 22, 2009 12:53 PM
Last night’s Art of Good Taste Masterclass at Camino (which we previewed here) was an exercise in fun with plenty of fabulous free food (pata negra! scallops!) and cocktails as well as ever replenished glasses of sherry for all attendees. From Spanish wine tasting to how to shuck an oyster, the workshops were full of …

In the Studio with Jon Burgerman
Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art, July 2009
English artist Jon Burgerman is internationally recognized for his doodling, drawing, scrawling and illustration. A fan of Jon’s fun and noodle-like character design for quite some time, I didn’t hesitate to take him up on his invitation to visit him at his studio in Nottingham.

Review: Comptoir Libanais on Wigmore Street (Londonist)
Review: Comptoir Libanais on Wigmore Street
Londonist, July 21, 2009 2:53 PM

… we were pleasantly surprised to find Comptoir Libanais to be brightly lit and cheerful with dashes of vibrant colour adorning its walls (in the way of giant representations of Arabian script gum wrappers and other honed-in kitsch elements throughout the dining area). We were also happy simply to see a restaurant in this part of town (65 Wigmore Street, W1U 1PZ) to be open despite the nearby department stores shutting shop around 6pm.
What elated us most was …

Sicilian Wine Tasting with Carluccio’s and Planeta (Qype does London)
Sicilian Wine Tasting with Carluccio’s and Planeta
Qype does London, July 21st 2009
Last night’s Sicilian Wine Tasting with Antipasti in Carluccio’s elegant Private Dining Room (upstairs at their Covent Garden location) was a laidback, sociable and deliciously brilliant time for the twenty or so Qypers fortunate enough to attend. On hand to guide us through the full range of offerings by Sicilian winery Planeta was the enthusiastic Michael Stocks, bar and training manager for Carluccio’s. Of course, Michael’s zealous love for and encyclopaedic knowledgeable of Sicilian wine was much appreciated. But the great thing about Planeta’s wines is that they speak for themselves. As Michael put it, most of Planeta’s wines could be described as “Marmite wines” – you either love them or hate them.

Wine of the Month: Berry Bros & Rudd’s Good Ordinary Claret
It’s perfectly understandable why Berry Bros & Rudd’s Good Ordinary Claret is their best selling wine. It’s delicious – and at £7.30 for an individual bottle, it’s a bargain! If I had the room, I’d be inclined to purchase a standby case for £78.84 (that’s only £6.57 per bottle). But alas, living in my urban abode means I’ll have to settle for only being able to stow away a couple of bottles of this red wine at any time. Actually, maybe that’s not such a bad thing, the more of this dry medium-full bodied Cabernet Sauvignon blend I’d have in my flat, the more apt I’d be to drink! And at 13% alcohol, such a lovely predicament wouldn’t add up to me being a very diligent boy at all.
I can’t think of any reason to pooh-pooh Berry Bros & Rudd’s Good Ordinary Claret. Neither can I imagine any of my wine drinking friends not loving it. Yep, I think I’ve found a winner in the category of last minute gift ideas as well as a reliable bottle of something to bring as a future dinner guest. A glass of Berry’s GOC certain goes down well on its own (as I sit here typing up my review) but I imagine it would accompany wonderfully a juicy steak or most game. I’m thinking some prosciutto with mozzarella di bufala would be an ideal treat to pair with this Bordeaux beauty too (or hmmmm maybe a brownie would go well with a glass of GOC?) – indeed GOC offers a fantastic and inexpensive introduction to discovering why such a fuss about Bordeaux reds exists.
Anyhoo, enough of my blathering! I really like the way the flavours of this impressively structured claret dissolve on my tongue, and I’m going to pour myself another glass … aaahhhh.
For product details and more, visit Berry Bros & Rudd online at http://www.bbr.com/ or stop by their shop at 3 St James’s Street, SW1A 1EG.

Dining Beyond Zone 1: Harrison’s (15-19 Bedford Hill, SW12 9EX)

Harrison’s is an attractive modern European restaurant and bar with a contemporary brasserie feel. We swung by this week to give its Summer Dining Set Menu with Rick Stein Wines a go and were more than pleased with our experience, particularly by the extraordinarily fast and friendly service. Back in November when we reviewed King’s Cross Spanish restaurant, Camino (3 Varnisher’s Yard, The Regent Quarter, N1 9AF), we concluded that we’d be happy to pay it a visit again. Review: Nom Nom Nom 2009
Londonist, July 13, 2009 4:30 PM
Yesterday’s Nom Nom Nom – a “Masterchef for bloggers” – featured eight teams of two slogging it out for a slice of glory in an all day cook-off. With team names such as Nomnivores and Muppets inspired team costumes, it was obvious this competition was all in the spirit of fun. Of course, that’s not to say the contestants weren’t serious about winning.

Review: Jimmy Virani is Beachcombing in Outer Space

Jimmy Virani (aka Nicolas Huguet) is a Theremin player. What’s a Theremin? You know, it’s that non-touch sound wave antenna contraption thing that makes those weird space age-y noises (think 1950s sci fi movies and songs like Good Vibrations by the Beach Boys or just look it up at Wikipedia). Jimmy Virani’s first go at professional recording, Jimmy Virani is Beachcombing in Outer Space, is a set of nine classic exotica and Hawaiian songs which showcases his accomplished Theremin virtuosity.
Of course, I realize that less than two weeks ago, I posted that I’m not really into writing music reviews, but when good friends send me their musical offerings from overseas (Virani’s base is France) – and I really enjoy listening to the music they make – well, I just can’t help but to spread the word about it.
Jimmy Virani is indeed a good friend and someone I’ve had some excellent tiki adventures with. I actually bought a Theremin from him a couple of years ago but ended up selling it back to him. I found it to be an extremely complicated instrument to attempt to play. It required hours of dedication and concentration even to learn how to sustain a note, not to mention trying to carry a tune. Virani’s ability to make his Theremin sing so eloquently and with such accuracy deserves a listen!
Jimmy Virani is Beachcombing in Outer Space (featuring excellent backup by TJ Weger and Josh Gibson of the Haole Kats and the Lost Idols), is quirky and entertaining. Fans of exotica and Hawaiian music will immediately recognize the cocktail sipping mainstays performed, including Sweet Leilani, Quiet Village, and Aloha Oe. My faves are his rendition of Hawaiian Wedding Song and his cover of Don Ho’s I’ll Remember You. The Theremin lends itself to the melodies of these songs in a really sweet way. Beyond the fab tunes, the CD features some exceptionally cool cover art and design work by the extraordinary Mexican low brow artist, Dr Alderete.
Speak French? Check out Jimmy Virani’s blog for more info. And, if your Japanese is adequate, go here to purchase a CD. Otherwise, visit http://www.myspace.com/nicolasvirani for samples, videos and details on how to purchase this fun set of songs.

Long Live the British Cherry!
Londonist, July 10, 2009 5:10 PM
Ah, British cherries. Some of the tastiest fruits on earth we reckon. And now’s the time to eat ‘em! But did you know that in the past 50 years, Britain has lost 90% of its cherry orchards and that we actually import the vast majority of cherries from abroad? FoodLoversBritain.com hopes to change those sad statistics with CherryAid, a campaign to …

(P)review: A Tradition I Do Not Mean to Break (Londonist)
(P)review: A Tradition I do not Mean to Break
Londonist, July 9, 2009 5:15 PM
A Tradition I do not Mean to Break is an exhibition you should not mean to skip. Featuring new moving image works by David Blandy, Tereza Bušková and Henry Coombes, the exhibition explores cultural subjects near and dear to these three artists’ hearts. Blandy’s Mississipi minstrel film, Crossroads draws viewers in with serene imagery. Coombes ignites imaginations with his erotically charged period drama about English landscape and animal painter, Sir Edwin Henry Landseer. And, Bušková? Well, her film and photography of Slavic Easter rituals, (cockerel beheading ceremonies and whatnot) simply mesmerize.
