Ghost Bike of St John St

Ghost bikes are (according to ghostbikes.org) “small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street.” These memorials are actual bicycles that have been painted completely white and locked to a street sign near the site of a crash. In addition to commemorating the loss of cyclists, ghost bikes …

Located in Islington just a short walk from Angel Tube Station, Chapel Market is a daily street market on the street of the same name. The market and the street exude old school working class charm.

Roasted Leeks and Romesco with Jennifer Klinec of Eat Drink Talk

Life for Londonist just keeps getting yummier and yummier since finding ourselves in the good graces of Jennifer Klinec. We’ve been amazed by her kitchen capabilities a few times already. But, with her recent offering of the traditional Catalan dish, calçots (roasted leeks) and romesco sauce (or “vegetarian chorizo in a bowl” as Jennifer describes it), we were absolutely reeling in foodie delight as our taste buds danced a giddy sardana of appreciation.

Dog Days at the Affordable Art Fair (Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art)

Dog Days at the Affordable Art Fair
Whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art, March 2009

Affordable Art Fair 2009 - Public Life/Nodding Dog by Kitty Blandy (Mumford Fine Art)

For the most part, this year’s AAF was a hit or miss affair. Lots of over-priced kitsch (dogs were an especially popular theme for much of the art on show) and last minute purchase possibilities for the next weekend’s UK Mothers Day (March 22nd) were on display with plenty of landscape paintings and portrait photography rounding out the bulk of what was represented.  Of course, with the mission to exhibit thousands of paintings, sculpture, photography and original prints with price tags between £50 and £3,000, perhaps such run of the mill works were to be expected. Despite the same-old-same-old aspect of many of the works, enough diamonds in the rough, undiscovered marvels and memorable up-and-comers were exhibited to make AFF a worthwhile visit, if not a mandatory shopping excursion, for both seasoned and wannabe collectors.

G20 Protests - City of London

For the most part, the scene was festival with plenty of reggae blaring and colourfully clad folks out to have fun spreading a message of non-violent change (despite the crackpot nature of so many of their stances). I think I even got a bit of a contact high just walking through the crowd. However, I did see some aggro:  cops shoving people unnecessarily, protesters throwing cans at cops, masked anarchist getting a little too pissy for my taste about …

G20 Protests - City of London

Riot police, mounted police, balaclava-ed anarchists, erstwhile students, crusty punks, old hippies, and lots and lots of photojournalists took to the streets as the lawyers, bankers and other City workers mostly stayed home. Not without some serious altercations, vandalism and aggressive provocation, the protests were for the pretty safe and actually quite festive.

Fish Fragrant Aubergines with Hollow Legs Blogger Lizzie Mabbott

Fish Fragrant Aubergines taste as poetically luscious as they sound, as we found out last night in the kitchen of food blogging wunderkind, Lizzie Mabbott. From Hong Kong but living in the UK since her teens and hankering for a taste of back home, Ms Mabbott took up cooking to get back to the flavours she loved as child. With a well used and lovingly tarnished wok as a testament to her efforts, Lizzie’s ease at the hob wowed us almost as much as the appetizing dish she so aptly prepared for us.

The Royal Warrants Association represents individuals and companies who have supplied goods or services for at least five years to HM The Queen, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh or HRH The Prince of Wales. Obviously, a seal of approval means these suppliers are considered among the cream of their respective crops. Drop by Cardinal Place on Thursday and sneak a peek inside the Buck House cupboards.

The world’s purportedly biggest invitation ever has been created this morning at Covent Garden. A Week of Waffling at Brick Lane’s Swedish Restaurant Fika (Londonist)

Vaffeldagen at Fika

Hej! How was your Våffeldagen? What!?! You didn’t celebrate Swedish Waffle Dayyesterday!?! Well as tragic as a missed opportunity to eat waffles all day may be, there’s still some scrumptious hope: a whole week of special waffles at the dandy Scandi Brick Lane eatery, Fika! This charming little gem of a restaurant started serving a special waffle menu on Monday and will continue until Sunday night with such Swedish waffle-topping delicacies as savoury reindeer salami or sweet (and tangy) lingon berries. Waffles are priced from under £4 to £16 for a “super deluxe” vaffeltarta sweet waffle stack for three to four people.

And don’t worry if ya can’t make it over this week – Fika has waffles on their dessert menu year round.

For our Våffeldagen visit, we sampled a couple of starters and mains from Fika’s regular menu and saved the waffles for dessert. Special menus aside, Fika is certainly worth remembering for the handsome portions of Swedish meatballs and pickled herring we started out with last night. The lax planka (grilled salmon from Billingsgate Market on a plank with Hollandaise sauce) was some of the best salmon we’ve had in long time, while reindeer sausages served with pressed potatoes, tossed greens and a “vibrant” juniper berry sauce left us belly-rubbingly satisfied. A refreshing Kopparberg Swedish pear cider in a frosted glass did our meal crisp justice. And then the waffles! We got a stack o’ wonder with jams and sauces and ice cream and more. Yum.

We waddled out of Fika and down Brick Lane glad to have indulged in one of Sweden’s tastiest of traditions at such a cosily Nordic spot. With cocktails named after Abba songs, life-size artificial turf reindeer sipping from teacups on the wall and homey food at reasonable prices, Fika is a find!

Fika is located at 161a Brick Lane. Visit their website for hours, specials and more.

Having a chat with Chris Osburn (Cadbury Fairtrade)

Now that Cadbury Dairy Milk has gone Fairtrade (yay!), they’re looking for smartypants foodies to talk generally about food as well as how Fairtrade and ethically sourced foods affect purchasing choices.  Here’s my take …

Having a chat with Chris Osburn
Cadbury Fairtrade, March 23, 2009

Ultimately, I think quality and ethics are often aligned in such a way that the highest quality product available is likely to be the most ethically sourced as well. When the best conditions for all stakeholders and the environment are introduced, it gives people a sense of ownership, pride and sustainability about the products they help bring to market. I reckon happy workers who are socially and ecologically aware are more apt to care about their work – especially with respect to food, resulting in yummier products for consumers.
