STEAK! with Cheese and Biscuits Blogger Chris Pople

One of London’s most noted food bloggers, Chris Pople, recently opened his home to Londonist to sample what he suggested would be the “best steak you’ll ever have (in the UK).” Having a look at his April 2007 “Steak!” post on his Cheese and Biscuits blog, we gladly accepted his invitation in anticipation of a night of meaty gluttony … The result? A gloriously juicy and decadently buttery hunk of cow like we ain’t never had. But was it the best Steak in the UK?

Raclette and Wine at La Cave a Fromage

Winter. Blah. But then again, this is the time of year when Raclette (and we mean the really good stuff) is at its best and still in season. So, winter. YAY! For the time being (give it another month or so) South Ken yumsters, La Cave a Fromage, are offering hot Raclette with potatoes, cornichon and a glass of wine for …

Guinness Turns 250

Guinness Cats

Just a quick post to thank the kind folks at Splendid Communications for providing me with the free cans of Guinness Draft and letting know about the 250th birthday of Ireland’s most cherished export! What a great excuse to throw a party! According to those lovely Splendid peeps, a variety of fantastic activities are in the works for this year and “the biggest Guinness celebration to date” is on the way.

Guinness Cats

Guinness is the first beer I ever tasted as a young’un that I actually liked and is still one of those standby drinks that never lets me down. Receiving such a treat from Splendid and Guinness was such a nice surprise. Thanks!

Awesome. Yummy. Guinness. Fun.

Yaaaay!

Bad News for Exmouth Market: Brindisa’s Gone! (Qype does London)

Brindisa at Exmouth Market No More!

Brindisa … was one of those shops that I had come to associate very closely with why Exmouth Market is so wonderful. With this and the recent closure of Metropolitan Books (and with the Guardian moving to King’s Cross), I’m starting to worry a bit. Is it the rising cost of rent with commercial rent? The credit crunch? Job losses? I don’t know.

Trader Vic's

Okay the snow’s turned to slush and now it’s raining. Yuck. Time for a bit of escapism at my favourite faux-Polynesian cocktail bar, Trader Vic’s! Hidden at the bottom of a spiral staircase in the basement of the Park Lane Hilton and immortalized in Warren Zevon’s classic Werewolves of London (“I saw a werewolf drinking a pina colada at Trader Vic’s, and his hair was perfect … ahhooooo …”) Vic’s has been serving consistently proper cocktails since 1963.

Borough Market and the South Bank

I loved being outside for most of the day and particularly enjoyed my time on the South Bank and poking about Borough Market.  This part of town is a favourite of mine anytime. But, add just a few inches of snow and – wow – it becomes even more evocative and photo-worthy!

London Snow February 2009

Well, the snow came down as forecasted, creating “commuter chaos” and providing yet another brilliant excuse for a visit to the pub(s)! It was also an opportunity to roam all over town checking out London-as-Winter-Wonderland. I don’t even know how many miles I walked yesterday … but …READ THE COMPLETE POST:  … And It Snowed

If it snows tonight/tomorrow – and I mean really dumps the white stuff as forecasted – I might just have to lace up my boots and go on a pubs-with-real-working-fireplaces crawl. Luckily there are a few in my part of town …

Flickr? I Hardly Know Her (dot com)

Thanks to the swissmiss blog (one of my favourite online reads), I just found out about a new minimalist way of viewing flickr images: ihardlyknowher.com.

In addition to having one of the funniest URL names I’ve come across in quite awhile, IHKH functions as an “alternative way to view Flickr photostreams. It is designed to facilitate high quality viewing with minimal distractions.”  Indeed, it truly cuts down on the clutter surrounding Flickr photostreams and shows the image with bare bones, pertinent info (time shot, settings, etc) about it.  Of course, when viewing photos via IHKH, you’re never more than a click away from Flickr and the viewed member’s profile.

IHKH is a personal project of Justin Ouellette, photographer and creator of Muxtape.  To use IHKH, all ya gotta do is add a Flickr username to the end of the URL. For example, my IHKH stream would be following:

http://ihardlyknowher.com/tikichris

Nice.

Pizza with Radicchio, Escarole and Bagna Cauda with Jennifer Klinec of Eat Drink Talk

When, Jennifer Klinec, founder-instructor of “new-school” cookery classes – Eat Drink Talk – asked Londonist to lunch recently, we thought “how can we refuse?” And when she mentioned she would be making pizza with radicchio, escarole and bagna cauda (keep reading for the recipe!), we thought “how the hell did we get so lucky?” Enthusiastically accepting Jennifer’s offer, we still didn’t realize just how frickin’ fantastic her pizza would be!
