When, Jennifer Klinec, founder-instructor of “new-school” cookery classes – Eat Drink Talk – asked Londonist to lunch recently, we thought “how can we refuse?” And when she mentioned she would be making pizza with radicchio, escarole and bagna cauda (keep reading for the recipe!), we thought “how the hell did we get so lucky?” Enthusiastically accepting Jennifer’s offer, we still didn’t realize just how frickin’ fantastic her pizza would be!

London is (or at least often can be) such a photogenic place. There’s just something about it. I mean, for the most part, it’s not incredibly beautiful … not like Paris or Barcelona anyway. Nor is London terribly stunning; you really can’t compare it to the vertical awe of Manhattan or the mind boggling expanse of, say, Shanghai. However, the story London tells through its streets, landmarks and faces (oh the faces in this town!) is as compelling as any I’ve ever experienced. The story is one of weathering crises with resolve and engaging the world on its own terms. Through my photography, I hope to share that story with the viewer. Sometimes I think I come close to succeeding.

It’s Friday Already? (January 23, 2009)
I did a whole lotta livin’ but not a lotta postin’ this week. Unfortunately, I had plenty of pesky desk work to do as well. But hey, that’s life.
Anyway, I did happen upon a pack of FURRY wildlife on the streets of London (and luckily had my trusty camera at hand to document the encounter). I also managed to get one more Sickboy article published.
Other than that, not much really. I’m still adjusting to the (INCREDIBLY AWESOME) fact that there’s a new President of the United States of America. I had some homemede pasta e ceci and a Moonpie too … And played surrogate tourist for an old friend back in Chattanooga.
Life is good,
Chris

Not content to simply wow exhibition goers with a retrospective of his best street and studio work, prolific London graffiti artist, Sickboy (whom we interviewed back in February 08), saw his recent solo show, Stay Free, as an opportunity to give something back to his fans in the way of offering his massive Stay Free Factory installation as a prize to one lucky exhibition visitor. During the December 4th through 10th run of the Stay Free exhibition, a thousand golden keys were released to the exhibition visitors with the person whose key fit the lock becoming the new owner of the Stay Free Factory (worth an estimated £20,000).

The Week (and Then Some) in Review
As my dear old mom might say, I have returned “from runnin’ around all over tarnation.” Hi. It’s good to be back. Since my last Weekly Update, way back on the 16th of December, I’ve …
– had the best damn BBQ ever;
All the while, I’ve relied upon the kind kitten-like instincts of a super-fantastic London-based cat sitter to care for my two lil kitty-witties. Yay for responsible people.

So there ya have it. My first Weekly Update of 2009. Question is am I gonna be able to keep up with these on a regular basis much longer? We’ll see.
Bestest of the best,
Chris

Vodka with a View
So it’s not all “impotence and humiliation” at Canary Wharf these days. There’s an ice skating rink at Canada Square (until the 22nd of February) and even a stylish and intimate lil fourth floor pop-up bar from which to enjoy watching the ice skating (until the 7th of February; 6pm-10.30pm, Mon-Fri).
Located on the terrace at Plateau Restaurant, the Smirnoff Black Winter Ice Lounge is a covered outside bar with thick faux fur blankies for cuddly nights out under the stars (and skyscrapers). It’s kinda Manhattan-y and a nice way to experience Canary Wharf.
Best Cat Sitter in London!
Yep, I know her and would be happy to recommend her to anyone in need of a kind, thoughtful, smart cat sitter who charges reasonable rates.
I’m a bit of a crank when it comes to people staying in my flat and don’t like the idea of just anyone looking after my kitties. My wife’s even more of a zealot when it comes to keeping a tidy home and with respect to the well being of our pets, she expects the utmost care. We both hold our cat sitter in the highest regard.
She even texts photos of our cats to us and sends us regular updates about how everything’s going.

Double-Bill Sweet Toof/Martin Lea Brown Exhibition at Sartorial Contemporary Art
One of London’s most determined fine artists has teamed up with one of its most notorious.
Expect masked gunmen slogging it out over criminal bounties (a la Martin Lea Brown) and big wet sloppy licks ‘n’ kisses from mouthy graffiti artist Sweet Toof at this Sartorial Contemporary Art exhibition running today and tomorrow and then from 13 January to 4 February. Both artists have the uncanny ability to juxtapose images of violence, illegality and desperation with vivid colours and an exuberance too often avoided in contemporary art (at least in this town). The results provide viewers with an opportunity to ponder societal anxiety and the fragility of cultural norms at a time when such topics truly resonate. In other words, this is cool shit that’s worth ogling. Very zeitgeist-y!

Online and Looking Ahead!
Okay I’m back in town and ready to take on 2009. Of course, if you’ve been following my tikichris to go and ontoTravel blogs, you’d be forgiven for thinking that I never really went away.
Now two weeks deep into January, I’m feeling energized and inspired about 2009, particularly after reading the “Ten tasks of Atomic Tony Tiki” over at the Atomic Tony Tiki blog. I was so impressed by ATT’s “shit list” that I’ve decided to come up with a few of my own priorities for the year. In addition to eating more leafy greens and getting back into the habit of going to the gym on a regular basis, (in no particular order) I would like to …1. Be more social with my social media activities:
I spend a lot of time blogging, tweeting, updating my status, uploading photos etc. Of course, it’s always great when I receive a kind comment from someone that took the time to respond to me. Not only should I reciprocate more often, but I really ought to take the initiative to let my social media contacts know when I appreciate what they’ve shared with the online world.
2. Take better pictures:
Practice makes perfect! I’ve got the knowledge (lodged in my brain somewhere) and certainly can access more photography-related info with ease. I just gotta get out there, take more shots, experiment and learn from my mistakes and successes.
3. Be a better writer:
Similar to “take better pictures” – I hopefully will continue to thoughtfully apply myself to my craft.

4. Be a kinder person:
I’ve a long way to go but I’ll keep at it!

5. Let people know how, when and why I appreciate them.
To align my words with the forces of good and make nice with people more often.

I’m sitting here at Hartsfield International Airport (ick) in Atlanta waiting for my flight back to Heathrow (double ick). Despite the prospect of an especially sinister case of jetlag and an ever increasing pile of work waiting to gang up on me across The Pond, I’m more than ready to return. Three weeks is a long time to be away. I miss my wife, my kitties, my daily routine and the city I call home.

TimeandDate.com
On the road (or in the air) so much you don’t know what time/day it is where you are/were going? Gotta call someone on the other side of the planet and can’t remember the country code?
Here’s a pretty handy website – www.timeanddate.com – for keeping up with time zones, travel distances and lots more. What’s especially helpful is its international dialing codes section, which makes international calls super easy.

An Implosive Send-Off
Back in May, I started writing what has become a monthy column for the TriCity News, an alternative newspaper focusing on the arts, culture, and politics in eastern Monmouth County – where I lived before moving to London. The column, published every third Thursday of the month, examines what it’s like to be an expat American living in London. It’s an honor and a pleasure to write for the TriCity News, a paper that I loved reading while living in the TriCity area. My second piece, “An Implosive Send Off,” was originally published in the June 15, 2006 edition of The TriCity News. Enjoy.
An Implosive Send Off
When last I checked in, I was contemplating the sorrows of a life without triCity cuisine but looking forward to my favorite London nosh. In this new installment, my focus is more well-rounded – I’m gonna miss my home in the Garden State!
By sheer coincidence, my last full day in New Jersey was the day of the C-8 demolition. Quite the implosive end to an already internally profound week! The missus was already across the pond in search of our new home, while I busily wrangled what seemed to be a hydra of loose ends back on the home front. Suffice to say, it was an exasperating and often lonely week.
Leaving our home, the triCity area, and our dear friends wasn’t easy. I already miss much about the area. Curiously off the top of my head, I miss the little marmot that lived in the patch of woods behind our house. He was an excellent source of free entertainment over the past few years. In fact, my last day at the house, I watched David Marmot (just one of his many nicknames) climb more than halfway up a tree!
The movers, having done a thorough job of stuffing the material elements of my life into a sealed cargo container, left the house empty – eerily empty. No longer a home, as much a mortgage payment needing to be addressed (our lovely house is on the market hint hint); I gave it the once-through (and then a once-more-through) and moved on.
Requiring a bed for the evening, and having every intention of catching the C-8 implosion the next morning, I had booked a room for the night at the Berkeley Carteret Oceanfront Hotel – just a stone’s throw from the C-8. The hotel appeared fully booked with many, if not most, of its occupants there with a goal similar to mine – getting up early the next morning to watch the past crumble before our eyes.
I’m sure the toppling of the C-8 has since been written about amply and well contemplated within the pages of this fine paper and other local publications – so, I won’t go there. But, allow me to say that it was great to witness that event on so many levels … and that it left me sad to realize that I won’t be around to continue experiencing Asbury Park’s ongoing evolution firsthand. It’s been utterly fascinating watching a city transform – for better or worse – on what often seemed to be a weekly basis.
After the demolition, my friends treated me to a last breakfast at my favorite bistro-by-the-sea, Tides, which was completely packed. Utterly intrigued to find an act of destruction could bolster the income of this local business, I soaked it all in for one last, lingering time: the crowd of happy folks chewing on breakfast-y comfort, my tablemates sharing their experiences of growing up in and around Asbury Park, the sunlight streaming through the windows.
After breakfast, we said our goodbyes, and I slipped into limbo – running odd last minute errands and pondering my new episode of life that fast approached. I don’t remember much about the rest that day, other than that the weather was perfect when I left for Liberty International Airport in Newark.
Of course, it was raining when my flight touched down at London Gatwick International the following morning. But, since then, the weather’s been mostly sunny. To the best of my knowledge, nothing imploded upon my arriving in London. And to be honest, hardly a building shrugged upon my return. In fact, London is much as I remembered, quirky and resolute … and continual.
Then, two weeks into being here, my wife clued me in on an interesting piece of news: One Westminster Bridge, notorious for being listed among London’s ugliest buildings, was scheduled for demolition the morning of May 25. This hexagonal building, known as the Greater London Council Island Block (GLCIB), had originally been constructed in the early seventies for government purposes but, owing to a lengthy list of costly uh-ohs, had been empty for around twenty years. Among the well intentioned blunders was the inclusion of state-of-the-art external automatic solar blinds that would lower for forty-five minutes every time the sun came out – even for a few seconds – and eventually wore out and got stuck in the down position.
In place of the GLCIB, a fourteen-story luxury hotel with 900 suites, business lounges, executive meeting rooms, a ballroom, 2 restaurants, a brasserie, bars, health spa, gymnasium and indoor pool is to be erected and to be ready for occupancy by the 2012 Olympics.
So yes, of course, I went to the demolition, where a rather large crowd of spectators – not as big as the C-8 crowd, but still pretty big – had convened. However, unlike the C-8’s demise, the commencement of the GLCIB’s downfall was mostly ceremonial, as the complete demolition is expected to take twelve to sixteen weeks of chipping away. I suppose that, if London can handle this eyesore for thirty-plus years, several weeks more won’t be a problem.
