Best London Cafes of 2017

DSC_6356

My look at the Best of 2017 continues with a shot of the tastiest coffee and preferred coffee purveyors in London.

With so many Londoners so very much dazzled by latte art and seemingly more in love with milk and sugar in their drinks than with the actual quality of the coffee and with Central London rents going through the roof and with eager EU workers potentially deciding not to make for our city to up the café ante, I worry London’s café culture might begin to see a decline.

At the moment though, there are still plenty of good cafes. Here are six of my faves (along with a few honourable mentions). Continue reading

Best London Bars and Pubs of 2017

P1070829

Having a drink in London is still a fine way to spend time. Here’s my take on the finest places to do so.

My choice of best bars in London is a markedly less pub-y list than in years last. I guess I just wasn’t wowed all that much by the pubs I encountered. However, the one that did make the cut is indeed a fine addition to the London drinking scene. The rest of the venues – a mix of old and new – all got a wow out of me and deserve a toast to many more years to come.

For a look at my favourite bars beyond London, read the last post in this Best of 2017 series. And be sure to keep an eye out for more lists to come. Continue reading

Best Bars of 2017 (Excluding London)

P1070401

If your preferred mode of travel involves sidling up to a bar, you’re going to love this ‘best of’ list of bars visited during my travels in 2017.

So, Europe, you’ve got some great bars. And Trieste, you might have the most endearing set of bars I’ve ever come upon in a city.

My Best of 2017 series continues with a look at the best bars (excluding London) I helped to prop up this year. My list of best London bars will follow shortly. Continue reading

Best London Restaurants of 2017

P1050573

Londoners, did you dine well in 2017? I sure did – especially at five particularly amazing London restaurants.

Simple dishes made with minimal fuss but using high quality seasonal ingredients to maximum effect seem to have grabbed my palate’s attention more than other foods when going out to eat in London this year. Scattered across town with none of the venues being too terribly expensive or exclusive, my short list of best London restaurants (and honourable mentions) is a tasty assemblage or eateries focused chiefly on presenting flavoursome food and respect for discerning diners keen to eat something delicious and forego any unnecessary trappings.

For a look at my favourite restaurants beyond London, check out the last post in this Best of 2017 series. And be sure to keep an eye out for more lists to come. Continue reading

Best Restaurants of 2017 (Excluding London)

P1090770

Best restaurants in the world? Here’s a taste of the ones I got to try.

My favourite restaurant experiences of 2017 were enjoyed mostly at fine dining establishments on the Continent (with two of only seven in tiny Ljubljana). But even at the most prestigious of venues listed below, it was a casual and lighthearted approach to eating that edged it out over other otherwise excellent restaurants I visited this year. I think this short list of restaurants (with a longer list of honourable mentions) represents places to eat where culinary confidence is the hallmark and pomp is left by the wayside.

This list excludes London restaurants. My list of best restaurants in London will follow shortly in my Best of 2017 series of posts. Continue reading

Five Guys Little Cheeseburger - P1100196

As the end of 2017 draws to a close, I would like to take a moment to highlight the best food, drink, and travel related treats that I came across in London and around the world over these past 12 months.

The year has been a tasty one. As in years before, I’ve taken notes and kept lists to ensure I would remember what excited me most and would be worth mentioning in a year-end roundup of noteworthy experiences. Continue reading

Back to Basel? Weihnacht!

P1100344

I spent the last weekend having an especially festive time in Basel – home to Switzerland’s biggest Christmas market and an all round excellent destination for cultured city break.

Waaay back in the summer of 2014 I wrote the following about my first ever visit to Basel:

I was inspired and impressed and would love to go back – and if my next visit is to turn out anything like this last trip did then doing so will be a piece of cake.

And indeed this recent return was a cinch. Continue reading

Review: Highland Apartments by Mansley (Urban Travel Blog)

Review: Highland Apartments by Mansley

For a “best of both worlds” getaway, Highland Apartments fit our bill perfectly offering an urban base for rural pursuits. Hardly a raging metropolis, Inverness nonetheless has a compact city centre with a surprising abundance of excellent restaurants, bars and pubs.

Our apartment was within a short stroll of most – as well as a quick and easy walk from the train station. But our main reason for visiting the largest city – and cultural capital – of the Scottish Highlands was to access the surrounding countryside.

Wild Turkey Lodge at The Ten Bells

P1100178

The upstairs bar at classic Spitalfields pub, The Ten Bells, has been transformed into a Kentucky hunting lodge for the winter, compliments of Wild Turkey Bourbon.

I paid a visit and enjoyed the décor (rustic Americana with worn leather elements and some ginormous taxidermed turkeys), the grub (Scotch eggs, pork pies, and such) and the drinks (chiefly a menu featuring five different Old Fashioneds made, of course, with Wild Turkey 101). Continue reading

Experiencing “City Zen” in London on an E-Bike

P1100069

For the past month or so, I’ve been enjoying the hell out of riding around London on a gorgeous Cityzen C8 HMB e-bike on loan from Royal Dutch Gazelle. As my time in possession of it comes to an end I’m trying to eek out as many chances as I can to ride it before having to return it.

I’ve been having so much fun zooming about town on this lightweight sporty and attractive electric bicycle and will miss it immensely. Continue reading

Winnie-the-Pooh: Something’s Warm and Fuzzy at the V&A

Winnie-the-Pooh: Something’s Warm and Fuzzy at the V&ALine block print, hand coloured by E.H. Shepard, reproduced with permission from the Shepard Trust

Judith Schrut celebrates all things bear at the V&A’s new Winnie-the-Pooh exhibition.

Is it my imagination or have you noticed it too?  Could this be the era of The Bear?  First came last year’s astonishing baseball World Series victory by the Chicago Cubs.  A few months back China  proudly welcomed a record number of baby pandas into the world, an incredible 42 including 5 sets of twins, thus removing the giant panda from endangered animals lists.  Then, the release of two major bear movies,  Paddington 2 and Goodbye Christopher Robin,  and the 50th anniversary since grizzly Gentle Ben first starred on US television.   And,  just the other day, a tall dark handsome stranger with a prominent American accent passed me on a London street and loudly greeted,   ‘Go Bears!’ (although that may have had more to do with the luminous UC Berkeley alumni hoodie I was wearing at the time).

Now, the wonderful Victoria & Albert Museum bares all with its big, new, clever exhibition,  Winnie-the-Pooh: Discovering a Classic.    Continue reading

An Essential Guide to Visiting Pearl Harbor in Hawaii (Going Places)

An Essential Guide to Visiting Pearl Harbor in Hawaii

Planning a dream vacation to the Hawaii? Make sure to save time for a visit to historic Pearl Harbor to honor the more than 2,000 Americans who died during the surprise attack by the Japanese on the naval base that was located there.

Today, the site of the attack (located on the island of Oahu) is officially known as the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument and is situated above the sunken remains of the USS Arizona, the most heavily damaged ship from the attack. The Monument serves to commemorate the date of this tragedy – December 7, 1941 – while offering informative insight about the attack and related events leading to America’s involvement in World War II.

5 Festive Things to Do in Essex

PB086793

Alexandra Kalinowski explores Essex and comes back with a few excellent ideas for festive merrymaking and food and wine related Christmas fun.

London is so beautiful at Christmas time. But it doesn’t quite rival the white snow falling on the lake and forests of Michigan. As much as I love ice skating next to the Tower of London, standing under the lights on Oxford Circus and Carnaby Street, there’s nothing quite like getting away for the day, travelling down long winding roads and sipping on (mulled) wine. So if you’re looking to escape the city for something a bit more magical, here are five things worth exploring in Essex to get you in the spirit. Continue reading

Understanding Rye with Karaway Bakery

P1100147

I thought I was hip to how good rye bread could be (and where it could be purchased in London). But soon into a rye workshop and tasting hosted by folks from Karaway Bakery, I realised I hadn’t know jack about how delicious these breads actually are.

Among the yummiest things I’ve had this year and definitely some of the tastiest breads I’ve come across in London are the ryes baked by Karaway. With more Great Taste Awards than any other bakery in the UK both this year and in the last five years, this family-run bakery is doing a phenomenal job raising the profile of Easter European baked goods – especially rye breads – and the standards of discerning shoppers seeking authentic, flavoursome and healthy alternatives to blander bread products crowding the shelves of bakeries and supermarkets. 5 Tips on Choosing a Candidate for Power of Attorney

5 Tips on Choosing a Candidate for Power of Attorney

Did you know that dementia and Alzheimer’s disease have become the leading causes of death for the first time in the UK? According to data published by the Office of National Statistics, dementia took 41,283 female lives and 20,403 male lives in 2015 alone. This has led to a huge rise in the number of lasting power of attorney applications in the UK, according to an article in The Telegraph, published in November 2016.

The article went on to state that in 2015, 441,500 power of attorney arrangements were set up, a drastic increase since 2008, a year that witnessed only 36,000 such arrangements.
Dementia or Alzheimer’s leads to degeneration of brain function, with the patient gradually losing their memory and ability to make decisions. Having an LPA or lasting power of attorney, which is a legal document that empowers chosen carers or relatives to make decisions on their behalf, thus becomes necessary. Continue reading
