KFC Me: Finger Lickin’ What?

KFC Me - DSC04676

Here’s another piece to add to my bucket o’ posts about my recent “behind the scenes” visit to KFC HQ in Woking.

My day there kicked off with a brief intro led by Mark Baxter, Operation Innovation Manager for KFC UK & Ireland. Mark’s honesty about where KFC stands on certain issues impressed me as did his headfirst dive into a discussion about animal welfare and nutrition. Although, I was left hanging with a few questions I asked and wondering if KFC could be doing at least a little bit more to promote better welfare for the birds they use and considerably more with respect to offering more nutritious and less ‘junky’ menu items.

For me, the takeaway was this: the chicken you eat at KFC is to the same standard or above that which you get from a typical high street supermarket and probably a lot better than anything from one of the myriad copycat skanky chicken joints spread across the UK. All KFC’s on-the-bone chicken is Red Tractor certified and from British farms. KFC was the first fast food retailer to get this sort of “seal of approval” for the quality of its product. More than 75% of all KFC chickens are raised in a “natural enrichment” environment. Basically, this means they have access to natural light and live in a setting that’s designed to minimise stress for the animal. I saw a video shot at a British farm supplying KFC with poultry. Obviously the clip highlighted the positive qualities of the conditions where the chickens live. Still it showed what looked to me like plenty of room for the birds to move about with some freedom. I was expecting it to be worse than what I viewed. By the middle of next year, all KFC-bought chickens will be “NE” raised. All animals slaughtered for KFC are stunned before being killed. Filets and other de-boned meat come from farms in Brazil and Thailand. I saw a vid from a Thai farm too. It looked even nicer than the British one. Some of the meat served at KFC is organic and some is halal (there are around 90 fully halal KFCs in the UK).

KFC Me - DSC04661

That’s all well and good. But when I enquired about the possibility of going free range, Mark explained that there just isn’t enough free range chicken out there to be purchased and that if KFC sold free range chicken the prices charged to customers would end up being a lot higher. He also said that “frankly we don’t think that most of our customers really care.” Now, I’m not going to claim to be a perfect saint, but I make an effort to buy meat from high welfare sources and really try to see meat as a treat and as something that you shouldn’t eat all the time just because it’s cheap and readily available. And sure, I’m a firm believer in the Law of Supply and Demand. Still, I thought his comment was a cop out and a slippery slope of an argument too.

KFC Me - DSC04672

Mark had a similar response to some questions I had about nutrition and added ingredients like sugar, dextrose and such. Essentially, I was trying to get at what a person is taking into his or her body (minus those top secret “11 herbs and spices” of course) when eating KFC products. Mark said most people who go to KFC wouldn’t want to known, but that he was sure if someone did they could find out. However, he didn’t tell me or point me in the right direction when I asked. He was able to tell me that there are no artificial transfats in any KFC dish and that the restaurants’ food is 98% palm oil free with the vast majority of fried items being cooked in a sunflower/rapeseed oil blend. There are healthy-ish options available too. In particular the “KFC Supersweet Corn Cobette” which launched this February is simply a steamed ear of corn with nothing added to do. I had one. It was tasty. Stay tuned for more in this series.

KFC Me: The Good, the Bad, and the BBC

KFC Me - DSC04679

As I mentioned in a previous post, I recently paid a “behind the scenes” visit to KFC HQ in Woking. Here’s Part Two of my short series about that experience.

So it wasn’t just me invited to Woking. A couple of other bloggers – Heidi of Heidi Roberts Kitchen Talk came along as did Jan of A Glug of Oil. There was also a film crew with us – a couple of dudes working on a three-part “fly on the wall” documentary about KFC that’s due to air later this year on BBC One.

KFC Me - DSC04662

Here’s how the upcoming show was described to me by someone working on the PR side of things for the restaurant group:

Although the employees’ stories are the main focus for the BBC, obviously as a show about a fast food restaurant they need to cover the actual food story too including nutrition and welfare issues that surround the business. Once we told them about the previous bloggers day we held, they thought this would be a good opportunity to delve a bit deeper into this area for the documentary.

I was asked by the crew about my impressions of KFC at the start of the day and then just before heading back to London. Honestly, my attitude toward the fast food chain did shift a bit in a more favourable direction. I sort of walked away from the visit seeing KFC as perhaps the least bad of several bad options – and had to acknowledge that its chicken is indeed really yummy and makes a nice treat. Unless I catch wind that I come off like a complete idiot in the show, I’ll be sure to give a shout out as soon as I hear anything else about when the documentary will be broadcasted.

KFC Me - DSC04685

During our time at KFC, Heidi, Jan and I chatted with reps about nutrition and animal welfare, took a look in the test kitchen and – yep – ate a lot of chicken, including some top secret items not yet on the menu. Overall, I was impressed by the frank and open discussions had with the KFCers, though I felt a few questions I had were left craftily unanswered. After all that, we headed to an outlet near Heathrow where I actually tried my hand at frying some chicken myself. I’ll share more about all that in my next post in this miniseries.

KFC Me: Something to Cluck About?

DSC04737

Before last week, I couldn’t have told you the last time I’d eaten anything from KFC. It had been quite awhile to be sure, maybe even decades. However, what I could have remembered viscerally despite these many years was the distinctive flavour of the Colonel’s original recipe chicken. I could have also thought back vividly to how much I loved eating that fried chicken as a kid. Growing up in a small town in in the American Deep South, Kentucky Fried Chicken seemed to have achieved the impossible by creating a menu that managed to serve fast food convenience plus a spread of family favourite dishes perfectly suitable for an at-home feast to be enjoyed around the Sunday dinner table.

These days as an expat living in London, I tend not to patronise corporate fast food outlets – or at least not any places that I consider to fall into such a category. Truth be told, any given week can find me regularly interacting (whether completely aware or totally oblivious) with all sorts of multinational whatevers dotted about the urban landscape and retail shelves of my daily life. For example, as much as I like to trumpet the benefits of shopping at my locally owned indie grocery, I can’t say I completely shy away from picking up budget buys at my nearby Tesco. I reckon that – like a lot of other Londoners – as health conscious and civic-minded as I aim to be with diet and shopping at the end of the day convenience, cost and (lack of) awareness play major roles in how I live my life as a consumer.

So when an invitation recently came my way for a “behind the scenes” visit to KFC HQ in suburban London, I must admit my own secret recipe of childhood memories and cravings blended with cynical adult ambivalence and amounted to a heaping dish of intrigue and a quick RSVP to take up KFC on the offer. Soon enough I was on the train to Woking to visit the UK offices of Yum International (the corporate group that owns KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell) for a talk and a tour and even the chance to have a go at frying up some chicken in an actual shop.

Join me as I cluck about my findings in a short series of posts. Part Two coming soon!

Pizza Union, Super Fast and Budget Friendly Pizza in Spitalfields

DSC04628

Kemey and I dropped by for a midweek early evening dinner at new(ish)ly opened Pizza Union near Liverpool Street for a taste of its “fire-baked” and “super fast” stone oven pizzas. And? We were pleased with this all day pizza bar’s no nonsense approach to offering customers something tasty and quick at a great price.

I got a 12” Margherita with half of it covered with especially spicy nduja. On its own the Margherita runs an extremely affordable £3.95. Extra toppings are £1 each – and there’s a large variety of them. There’s a range of other pizzas too though, all of which are made using fior di late mozzarella and San Marzano tomato sauce and freshly-made, hand-stretched dough.Kemey went with the Fiorentina (tomato sauce, mozzarella, Parmesan, egg, black olives, and fresh spinach, £5.50) and enjoyed it. We had some Merlot (around 11 quid for the bottle) as well as a freshly baked and rather gratuitous (but nonetheless wolfed down) dough ring filled with Nutella and mascarpone (£2.95).

DSC04630

Service was speedy (and friendly). Indeed, the pizzeria prides itself on being able to get orders filled within three minutes. I found pared down dining area to be a pleasant enough place to hang out, and somehow even cosy despite being almost cavernous is size.

If I lived or worked a little closer, I’d be at Pizza Union all the time. As it stands, I’m bouncing in and out of the area on a fairly regular basis – and will definitely keep it in mind. By the way, I think they just started delivering locally.

An extremely easy eatery to recommend, Pizza Union is located at 25 Sandy’s Row, E1 7EZ. Find out more at pizzaunion.com.

Urban Massage ‘Home Delivery’ Massage Service for London

Picture 8

You know what I did all last week? Sat on my butt, dodged deadlines and tapped away on my MacBook trying to diminish a greater than usual workload. And that was pretty much it. To be sure, it was pretty boring but, in all honesty, not a terribly bad way to spend a week – I’m a writer by choice and certainly appreciate opportunities to make a little extra cash and contribute to some killer projects (all to be shouted out about soon). But, man, such a job can wreak havoc with my back and shoulders. So, when an offer came my way to review Urban Massage’s new “on-demand mobile wellness service delivering massages to home, hotels and offices by vetted, qualified and insured therapists who can be at your door/chosen location within 60 minutes notice,” I was like oooh yeah, please!

The one hour/£60 “Urban Classic” massage I received was easily booked online, received in my the comfort of my own home, and resulted in one of the soundest and most restful sleeps I’ve had in ages. Ah. The next day I was still feeling loose and relaxed from the treatment. Double ah.

Beyond the Urban Classic, there is a variety of services provided such as lomi lomi, pregnacy, sport, anti-cellulite and more ranging in price from £60 for a one hour/two hand massage to £180 for a two hour/four hand service. At the moment, Urban Massage is only available in London – the boundaries of which don’t seem to be clearly defined, but I had no problems getting a therapist arriving exactly on time to my Hackney E5 doorstep. There are plans to expand to “other major cities around the world.”

Now, if you’re reading this and thinking that to book with Urban Massage equals a little at home little hanky panky, you should think again. Urban Massage makes clear, it’s “entirely therapeutic and non-sexual in any nature” and if you make a sexual request, “you will be reported to the local police for sexual harassment.” Indeed, my therapist – Giorgia – was an excellent therapist with ten years experience, a super polite demeanour and a totally professional attitude – and with respect to my time with her, nothing else.

Something I feel I should point out – which isn’t so much a criticism of Urban Massage or any sort of complaint – is that going to a spa or wherever for a treatment and thus removing myself from all the trappings of everyday life is one of the key elements of a great massage for me. So, having it at home with all the homey stuff surrounding me was in way less than ideal. Still, I’m sure there are innumerable folks out there with hectic schedules or limited mobility who could benefit from this new service. Convenience trumps a lot of other factors in most cases anyway.

I certainly would be keen to book another appoint with Urban Massage and can confidently recommend it based upon my experience.

To book an appointment, go to urbanmassage.com. And when you do …

Be sure to take advantage of this code for a 10% discount off your booking:

Yep, that’s me: always looking out for my readers by trying to pass on the good stuff I come across to you as best I can.

RAW, the Artisan Wine Fair, Returns to London – 18 and 19 May

DSC_3785

RAW – the Artisan Wine Fair – is a two-day celebration of some of the best wine talent in the world. Featuring over 150 growers, RAW is one of the most exciting collections of fine, natural, organic and biodynamic wine artisans ever to come together in the capital. Their wines are pure, kind to the planet, very possibly better for your health and best of all they’re absolutely delicious.

I’ve gone to RAW every year and am really looking forward to checking out the 2014 edition and sharing my notes in a subsequent post. Put plainly, RAW provides an excellent opportunity to discover a great range of wines made with integrity – that some of those wines might be among the most delicious and intriguing you’ll ever try is a bonus.

More stuff in the bonus category includes food from Pecham Bazaar, Antidote, and Elliot’s Cafe plus the chance to try a selection of exciting artisan London drinks producers, including cola, tea, gin, and lots of craft beers.

RAW will be open to the public from 10am to 6pm on Sunday 18 May and 5am to 8pm on Monday 19 May at the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, E1 6QL, UK. Tickets cost £25 in advance for one day or £30 at the door and £40 for both days (in advance only).

Did I leave any info out? Probably. Best check rawfair.com for details.

Ten Tastes Of Soho Tour for Foodies in London (OneTravel)

A couple of Saturdays back, I tagged along on a delicious tour through the historic and vibrant streets of one of London’s most celebrated neighbourhoods – Soho.

The tour was organized and led by chef, ex-restaurateur, and host of the Scratch Supper Club, Michelle Francis, and took a small group of enthusiastic foodies on a walk around the area to discover the “Ten Tastes of Soho” and learn about “the Big Five” – a quintet of local restauranteurs and chefs whom Michelle reckons are the most important movers and shakers in the Soho dining scene. The tour started around 11 in the morning and lasted until 2 p.m. with plenty of food and drink provided along the way, leaving no need for an early dinner.

Discover The Douro (Great British Chefs)

DSC_7804

Chris Osburn takes us on his journey of discovery in the Portuguese regions of Porto and the Douro Valley. The trip has clearly changed his views on Port as well as all wines from those areas he visited.

Discover the Origin is a delectably impressive Italo-Franco-Portuguese alliance united to raise awareness about five of Europe’s 1,873 protected products: wines from Burgundy, Parma ham, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, and Port and Douro wines.

Two years ago this month, I was invited by the DTO folks to embark upon my first trip to “discover the origin” of some of Europe’s most iconic and distinctive food and wine. That initial expedition sent me to Burgundy where I spent a week visiting vineyards and wineries around the region. Later that same year, I got to learn about even more continental delights when I took a savoury sojourn to Italy to have a look at the traditions and big business behind Parma ham and Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese. Now, I’m back from a tour of Porto and the Douro Valley, the last of my DTO visits.

Celebrating its eleventh anniversary and touted as one of the most important yacht races in the South Pacific, the Tahiti Pearl Regatta combines competitive sailing – on the high seas and in lagoons – with cultural events and boozy night time festivities. The route changes every year to give sailors a chance to discover different aspects of this remote and tropical paradise. This year’s race took place over the weekend, bringing memories of my own adventure on the Tahiti seas in the 2013 regatta flooding back.

Codorníu Cava + Jose Pizarro and Ashika Mathews at Portobello Road Market – Saturday 10 May

DSC_3643

The bright and bubbly folks behind Codorníu Cava are ”
hitting the markets of Britain” with their Codorníu Cava Revolution to “spread the Cava love and bring the soul and vibrancy of Barcelona’s famous market – La Boqueria – to the UK.” This Saturday (10 May) they’ll be at Notting Hill’s Portobello Market from 8am to 7pm. Joining the Codorníu team will be wine expert Ashika Mathews as well as chef José Pizarro, who’ll be pairing the sparkling wine with his own tasty Spanish creations.

The Codorníu Cava Revolution is a campaign to “right any wrongs about cava” and to get folks in Britain to have a taste of Barcelona’s favourite cava. Next stop after Portobello will be Kingston Market (minus Pizarro and Mathews) at Kingston-upon-Thames on Saturday 24 May.
