I’m heading to this “greatest spectacle” on Saturday night and cannot wait. I’m not sure if it will live up to the experience I had catching a night of lucha libre at Arena Mexico a few years back in Mexico City, but I have no doubt the evening with be an action packed blast. If you’ve never had the pleasure of witnessing the awesome force that is Mexican professional wrestling, do yourself a massive favour and make this off kilter event your weekend priority. Preview: Bompas & Parr Dine with the Dead and Toast with a Human Skull

Over my years writing about the London dining scene one thing’s proved a certain constant: any email landing in my inbox from the jellymongering of Bompas & Parr is a must-read missive. The latest announcement of foodie frivolity (this time with a slightly darkened tinge) is no exception with an invitation to “a magnificent feasting occasion offering guests the ultimate tribute to departed Londoners in a spectacular environment.” Continue reading

Review: Mark Little #SecretMeetings at the Museum of Comedy

Olivier award winning Mark Little had his small audience of “comrades” in stitches for most of the show with astute and politically charged observations presented in a madcap if thoughtful manner with an ample dose of off the cuff and self effacing improv alongside plenty of zany antics ensuring nothing was taken too seriously. Continue reading

Coming Soon: The Clockjack Chicken Burger

Sometime this week, Soho’s Clockjack Oven will launch the Clockjack Chicken Burger – a fried chicken thigh burger with a bit of a kick to it. Lucky clucker that I am, I had a chance to sample a prototype of the new burger last week. It was truly delicious and I reckon will prove to be a very popular addition to an already tasty menu. A Midsummer’s Night Dream with David Walliams and Sheridan Smith

Magic, intrigue and an exceptionally twisty plot are the hallmarks of this romantic comedy that’s as relevant and timely today as when it was first performed during the Elizabethan era. As the Bard writes, “the course of true love never did run smooth.” Of course, that’s what makes the subject such a compelling theme for theatre. Continue reading

Theatre Preview: Mandrake at the Brockley Jack #MandrakePlay

Opening this week for a couple of weeks’ worth of shows at the Jack Studio Theatre in Brockley is Mandrake – a classic work by Machiavelli revived for the London stage for the first time in nearly 30 years. Adapted by playwright and novelist Howard Colyer and directed by Scott Le Crass, this significant piece of literature from the Italian Renaissance with a plot filled with lust, adultery, corruption and deceit should still hold its own with a modern audience and offer more than a few good laughs. Continue reading

Transforming the Titanic Ballroom at Cafe de Paris, Black Cat Cabaret draws inspiration from the “absinthe-soaked heyday of Montmartre’s dark and daring cabaret underworld” and with a line up featuring a “lip-syncing comic genius … showgirl dynamos .. daredevil aerial acrobatics … an accordionista of the apocalypse” and more, this certainly promises to be a quirky night out at the very least. Recipe: Michel Roux Jr’s Crushed Garlicky Rooster Potatoes in Their Skin

With only these six ingredients (okay, eight if you count the salt and pepper) and just a handful of basic steps to follow, I found this recipe offered especially tasty value for minimal effort. Not much clean up afterward either. As the name implies, this dish is a garlic lover’s treat. I reckon you could tone down the amount of garlic suggested and still be happy with the results. An additional splash or two of the pastis wouldn’t be such a bad idea. Continue reading

Review: Fingers and Thumbs’ Seafood Shack

Last night I paid a repeat visit to a repeat opening of Fingers and Thumbs’ Seafood Shack. Yum. Following ye olde ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix’ methodology, I kept with what I knew I’d love: a big ole pot of lobster cooked with juicy prawns, mussels, clams, veggies and more. Complimented by n ample stack of rustic bread with home made cocktail sauce (which could have been a little better honestly), washed down with a few Kronenbourgs, and rounded off by a scoop of especially tasty vanilla fudge ice cream – it was a fun and filling meal. The damage? Around £55 total for two. Continue reading
