Four Reasons to Stay in Soho When You Visit London

You know me – I love London. The thing about living here for over ten years though is that I experience the city like a local not as a visitor. Despite often viewing the city through a rather rose-tinted lens, … Continue reading

London Daily Photo: Appleton Estate’s Senior Blender, David Morrison, at Hawksmoor Spitalfields

It’s London Cocktail Week: red letter days for booze hounds, bar folk and limber elbowed media types from across the globe. I’ve been getting in on the LCW fun a bit too. My lunch yesterday came compliments of Hawksmoor Spitalfields where Appleton Estate’s Senior Blender, David Morrison, was on hand to guide a small group of us (booze hounds, bar folk and limber elbowed media types) through a hands-on rum blending. London Daily Photo: Stanley Donwood at The Outsiders London

Stanley Donwood’s latest exhibition Far Away is Close at Hand in Images of Elsewhere is now open at The Outsiders London (Greek Street, Soho). Vibrant and eerie, the show’s well worth taking a look at. Many of you who might not immediately recognise the artist’s name might actually have some of his work in your homes. Donwood has been collaborating with Radiohead for cover artwork since the band put out The Bends almost a decade ago. Continue reading

Restaurant Review: Central & Co, Great Marlbourgh Street, Soho

What’s with all this “& Co” business in London these days? Here’s my third review in a row of an eatery with such a suffix to its name. Fortunately, my & Co trio has provided me with more than decent grub. In the case of Soho brasserie with chic basement bar, Central & Co, I found an especially convenient and fairly swank venue offering a something-for-everyone approach toward food and drink. All Day Soho Dining at Damson & Co on Brewer Street

Two current trends in the London dining scene at the moment are creating all-day-dining menus and adding a gratuitous “& Co” to the end of your business’s name. Newly opened Damson & Co twirls a double braid of zeitgeist to offer the constant flow of Soho shufflers a handy little place for a full-on dinner or a dabbling dash with libation – be it booze, fresh juice or quick shot of espresso. Coming Soon: The Clockjack Chicken Burger

Sometime this week, Soho’s Clockjack Oven will launch the Clockjack Chicken Burger – a fried chicken thigh burger with a bit of a kick to it. Lucky clucker that I am, I had a chance to sample a prototype of the new burger last week. It was truly delicious and I reckon will prove to be a very popular addition to an already tasty menu. NFL in the UK (CheapOair)

Every year since 2007, a regular season game of good ole NFL American football has been played at Wembley Stadium in London. Plans for the 2013 season keep with this well established trend but actually up the ante with not just one but two NFL International Series games slated to be played at the 90,000 capacity Wembley Stadium, the world’s largest stadium with all seats under cover. Continue reading

Carpo: Great Greek Snacks at Piccadilly Circus

Carpo, an emporium and cafe offering a simple selection of “nuts, chocolate and coffee” (there’s dried fruit and a few other products as well) has recently opened near Piccadilly Circus. So what? So … fantastically flavoursome pistachios, delectable honey with a hint of thyme, exquisitely juicy candied mandarins, figs covered in chocolate that are worth dropping whatever you’re doing at this very moment to rush over for a taste of and a whole lot more – that’s what. Continue reading

Five Great Jazz and Blues Bars in London (CheapOair)

There’s no need to get the blues in a jazzy town like London. If you’re looking to experience a great night of live blues or jazz then you’re in the right place. London is home to an amazing bar and club scene, and as a fan of rock ‘n’ roll can attest, the Brits have always had an affection and a knack for finding the best in American music. Soho’s Best Indian Restaurants (OneTravel)

Burlexe: Burlesque Inspired Theatre at London’s Shadow Lounge (OneTravel)

I, for one, enjoyed myself immensely when I checked out the show earlier this month. I laughed a lot. I blushed as dancers made eye contact, took to the audience and once when one performer ran her finger along my jawline. Ooh la la! Continue reading

Spring into a Great Soho Supper at Carom Pan-Indian Restaurant

Kemey and I were treated to a delicious meal over the weekend at pan-Indian restaurant Carom at Meza. Based on past experiences, I figured we were in for a more than decent dinner when I made the reservation, but expectations were exceeded and both of us came away glad to add one more reliably good and centrally located restaurant to our list of quality venues worth keeping in mind. Black Cat Cabaret at Cafe de Paris, London (OneTravel)

A tip of the hat to the legendary Le Chat Noir club of Paris, the Black Cat Cabaret at the historic Cafe de Paris at Leicester Square draws its inspiration from the “Absinthe-soaked, dark and daring heyday of Montmartre’s cabaret underworld” offering a chance to “discover decidedly modern performance in its many strange and wondrous forms.”

Preview: Black Cat Cabaret at Cafe de Paris

Transforming the Titanic Ballroom at Cafe de Paris, Black Cat Cabaret draws inspiration from the “absinthe-soaked heyday of Montmartre’s dark and daring cabaret underworld” and with a line up featuring a “lip-syncing comic genius … showgirl dynamos .. daredevil aerial acrobatics … an accordionista of the apocalypse” and more, this certainly promises to be a quirky night out at the very least.
