Christmas Menu at Bedford & Strand

A recent opportunity to sit in on a tasting of Bedford & Strand’s Christmas 2013 menu also served as a chance to sample the creations of new Head Chef Joseph Dean. Thumbs up to Dean for taking the same-old-same-old standards and adding just a touch enough pizzazz to enliven what otherwise might have come across and yawn-worthy stodge. Continue reading

A Midsummer’s Night Dream with David Walliams and Sheridan Smith

Magic, intrigue and an exceptionally twisty plot are the hallmarks of this romantic comedy that’s as relevant and timely today as when it was first performed during the Elizabethan era. As the Bard writes, “the course of true love never did run smooth.” Of course, that’s what makes the subject such a compelling theme for theatre. Continue reading

Theatre Review: Blind Date at the Charing Cross Theatre

I’m more than happy to recommend Blind Date at the Charing Cross Theatre to anyone looked for some light hearted entertainment. I wouldn’t even mind seeing this comedy again, honestly, especially considering that all performances promise to be different with a new (and haplessly unsuspecting) leading man every time. London’s Chinatown Around the Edges (OneTravel)

London’s annual Chinese New Year parade will slither its way through Chinatown on Sunday the 10th of February. Obviously, going out for Chinese cuisine on that day would make a lot of sense … if you’re patient or have the luxury of planning ahead and making a reservation. However, if you find yourself burnt out on Chinese food or still wishing to enjoy the Chinatown festivities without having to endure the crowds, it’s worth noting there’s a lot more on offer in this area than dumplings and Peking duck. Wine of the Month: Sophie’s Reserve Rouge 2011 – House Red at Sophie’s Steakhouse

One aspect to my lunch at Sophie’s still stands out as exceptional: the house red. Sophie’s Reserve Rouge 2011, IGP d’Oc is a great wine. At £4.75 for a 175ml glass and £16.95 for a bottle it’s great value too. A blend of Syrah and Grenache created by the restaurant’s “own team”, I liked it from the first sip and thought is was an especially smart and easy drinker to go with red meat. Good ‘n’ juicy with a medium body, it’d be a nice one to drink on its own if slipping into Sophie’s for an evening at the comfortable (and I hearing ridiculously popular) bar. Continue reading

New Flagship Benugo is Welcome Addition to Covent Garden Dining Scene

I’m pleased to report that Benugo has recently opened a new flagship cafe at the corner of Long Acre and Bow Street near Covent Garden. The new venue is great news (for me at least) because I find myself bopping through that part of town all the time, and Covent Garden dining options are rather hit or miss in my opinion. Minus a few frugal exceptions, all the hits that I can think of around there are all pretty expensive too. Continue reading
