Fresh Crisps and Tasty Dips at HipChips, Old Compton Street

HipChips found-chef Scott Davis’ aim is to make the best crisps in the world with British heritage potatoes served alongside a menu of premium sweet and savoury dips. Judging from my crunch time at his comfortable Soho eatery, I’d say mission accomplished.

HipChips launched at the end of last year. I had a chance to visit when it opened but, honestly, it wasn’t top of my agenda (and I didn’t expect it to last even as long as it has). What do I know?

But when an invitation came my way to drop by for a taste of HipChips’ limited range of St Patrick’s Day dips, I thought I’d give it a shot – if only to validate my eye rolling a few months back. Rather than scoffing at the concept and being unimpressed, though, I actually found myself scarfing down some really tasty crisps and exceptionally yummy dips.

Potatoes used are colourful mix of five heritage varieties grown in northern England, presented in fried form of crimson, purple and golden array. They yield a better tasting (and crispier) crisp than what you’re probably accustomed to having, but the real draw of HipChips are the dips.

My order, a large box of crisps, came with a choice of six dips (from a range of at least twice as many). I went with four savouries – katsu curry, smoky cheese fondue, veggie ceviche, and the limited run St Paddy’s special, stout rarebit and ale chutney – and two sweets – chocolate salted caramel, and Irish cream (another St Pat special). Faves were the fondue, the Irish and cream and the caramel. Absolute fave was blending the Irish cream with the caramel – total treat.

As for the price, HipChips offerings are not cheap as chips. £11.50 is the cost of a large box with six dips. It’s an ample snack for two people though and provides a good excuse for convivial munching and a hard to pass up idea for post drinks nosh. There are smaller/lower price options as well.
