Wine of the Month: Apres Le Pluie, Rosé, 2013 Domaine Jones, Languedoc

DSC_9154

A tale of tasty triumph in the face of adversity is uncorked with my review of this rosé made with a rosy attitude toward life.

Okay, so it’s been a few months since my last WOTM write up. What can I say? I’ve been busy. Too busy to drink good wine? Of course not – just too slammed working on other stuff to blog about any of the commendable wines I’ve been sipping. Sorry. Anyway, I have a bit of time on my hands today, as well as a glass of a rather delicious quaff actually in hand. So, without further ado, here’s my Wine of the Season review of the very enjoyable Apres Le Pluie, Rosé, 2013 Domaine Jones, Languedoc, France.

Apres Le Pluie is an especially easy-to-drink rosé selected by Katie Jones, the award-winning winemaker behind the Domaine Jones label. It goes down remarkable well when chilled, and I can’t think of anybody who’d turn a nose up to its fresh bouquet and green apple flavour. In addition to its great taste, this wine’s got a juicy story going for it too.

Due to a senseless act of vandalism earlier this year, Katie lost all of her 2012 white wine incurred a huge financial loss. But, with a sunny “apres la pluie, le beau temps” approach toward business, she teamed up with The House Wine to collaborate on a “recovery” range.

From The House Wine blog:

The story of the mindless vandalism that dealt Katie Jones of Domaine Jones a real blow with the loss of her entire production of white wine has made the national press. It’s heartbreaking to lose something that you have put so much work into and something that is irreplaceable. Domaine Jones is a real one woman operation so every bottle of wine really counts and the financial ramifications of losing thousands of bottles is huge.

The pale, 100% Grenache 2013 Apres Le Pluie is a superb summer quencher and available from thehousewine.co.uk at £9.50 per bottle.

August Work Heats Up

DSC_8625

I used Grammarly to grammar check this post because I’m writing about all sorts of stuff at a rate like never before in my career. Proofreading isn’t something I particularly enjoy. If I can dump such a task onto an online service, why not?

I’ve been freelancing as a writer for quite awhile now. Over the years, I’ve come to expect plenty of uncertainty. One thing has been a constant, though: whether I would want to or not, I usually could have taken off the entire month of August. It’s the time of year when so many people (or at least their bosses) go on holiday, and there’s simply not anyone around to call the shots or even meet with for a coffee.

However, this August is markedly different. For some reason, what traditionally has been my slowest month has become my busiest. My regular workload hasn’t ceased at all while a few juicy projects have landed in on proverbial desk from out of the blue. Not even two weeks into August, I’ve already put in more hours than my might during a full month. That’s not to say the preceding seven months have been particularly sluggish. I’ve been working at a steady clip all year.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. I need the work. As diligent as I try to be, the money made isn’t exactly breaking the banks. I’m not bragging either. I’m honestly just not “there” yet. I’m keeping at it though, and I must admit that it feels good to stay active doing something that I love.

I wonder if this extra work is a sign that the economy is picking up or proof that I actually might be doing something right. Maybe I just got lucky, and this boon is an anomaly. How’s your summer work coming along?

Hush Brasserie: A St Paul’s Restaurant Worth Shouting About

DSC_8825

If you’re working or sightseeing around St Paul’s and looking for a quality meal, you’re in luck. The newly opened Hush Brasserie is an excellent option, maybe even your best choice minus any fine dining establishments in the area.

I’ll keep this review to the point, so you can spend less time online and more time enjoying your meal. I was really impressed with my experience at Hush and honestly cannot think of anyone I wouldn’t recommend this place to.

DSC_8829

An amazing mega-burger (with mini Caesar salad, £10.95; topped with BBQ pulled pork for an extra £2.45) considered the best in town by the Evening Standard pleased my greedy palate. To be sure, I went with the added pulled pork option and suggest that you do too. A wine list with all quaffs available by the glass was a nice touch. Indeed a glass of 2010 14 Hands’ “Hot to Trot” Merlot/Cabernet/Syrah blend from Washington state (£8.75 for a glass, £34.95 for a bottle) proved a perfectly punchy pairing with my burger). Seating was plush (get a cushy booth if ya can). Other highlights: green pea soup with Welsh rarebit crouton (£4.95); fantastic frites (£3.50); refreshing blood orange sorbet (£4.50).

Everything was nice and hassle free.

Only caveat, I was there on a Saturday for an early lunch. My girlfriend and I virtually had the place to ourselves. Service was especially receptive and efficient, but there wasn’t anyone else that the staff needed to look after. My guess is that lunch during the week is a different story as I can see such a well situated and comfortable venue getting packed. So, it might be worth your while to make a rez if you’re planning a visit during the week? The place is definitely worth keeping in mind if you’re in the area on the weekend and want lots of brunchy yum without any the fuss! Other noteworthy stuff to mention: they’ve got complimentary coffee, papers and WiFi along with “brown bag” lunch specials and a delicious looking breakfast menu.

DSC_8835

Yep, this is a brasserie version of Jamie Barber’s much adored (and with good reason) destination dining establishment in Mayfair. There’s another one of these brasseries in Holborn as well. I guess the main difference between the original Hush and these new ones is that the brasseries are more high street-y. That’s not a bad thing, really, if you’re simply hoping to have a decent meal at a value-for-money price. Based on my visit, I’d say the Hush brand is anything but diminished by these satellite outlets while the high street (running through St Paul’s and Holborn anyway) are now a little tastier.

Hush Brasseries St Paul’s is located at 1 Ludgate Hill, EC4M 7AA. Find out more at hushbrasseries.com.

Recipe: Chipotle Cherry Honey Jam

DSC_9031

Here’s a recipe for a no-sugar cherry jam with a mild kick to it. The recipe is perfect if you’ve only got a small batch (even a micro batch) of cherries and not much time. Basically all you need to make this treat is a punnet like you get at any supermarket or from any fruit and veg vendor. You want a big last-through-winter mess of the stuff? Do the math.

Last week I received four punnets of rare variety cherries from City catering specialists Lusso. Recently, Lusso partnered with National Fruit Collection at Brogdale in Kent to bring 3,500 varieties of forgotten fruit – apples, cherries, plums, gooseberries, currants, medlars, quinces, damsons, gages and cobnuts – out of the archive and into the workplace. From this month on through the summer growing season, Lusso clients will have a chance to try these gorgeous English grown produce marginalised by commercial growing.

Such an initiative is commendable … and delectable! I was impressed by how distinctly different each punnet was. The cherries I got to sample included a plump and juicy Vlachova (probably my favourite of the bunch); a dark and compact Venus; a firm and flavoursome New Star; and a tart Old English variety called May Duke. I’d savour any chance to sample more of their fruits or to arrange a visit to the NFC.

DSC_8869

With little room in my fridge (I’m enjoying a food blogger’s bounty these days), I had more than could eat before they went off (but boy did I try!). So, I thought I’d have a go at making my own jam. I should mention that this recipe would be still in hmm phase if it wasn’t for a strong dose of inspiration from David Lebovitz’s No-Recipe Cherry Jam.

DSC_8868

My recipe calls for no sugar and can be made from scratch in well under an hour with six easy to find ingredients. I used a mix of sweet Vlachova and tart May Dukes. I reckon the jam is worth making with just about any kind of cherries you come across. Depending on how sweet or sour your cherries are, you may want to adjust how much lemon, apple and honey you add to the jam.

CHIPOTLE CHERRY HONEY JAM

Yum

Ingredients for one

  • 1 cup of cherries, pitted and stemmed;
  • 1 peeled and finely diced apple;
  • 2 small dry chipotle chillies;
  • Juice and zest of 1 lemon;
  • 6 tablespoons of clear honey;
  • 1 sprig of fresh thyme.

Method

  • Place the pitted cherries and diced apple in a small pot placed on a hob – thoroughly mash together;
  • Crack open 1 chipotle chilli and sprinkle all the seeds into the pot – mix well;
  • Turn your hob on medium heat stirring the mixture every 30 seconds or so;
  • Add the zest of your lemon to the pot – continue to mix regularly;
  • Squeeze the lemon juice into the mixture – continue mixing;
  • Add 6 tablespoons of honey to the mixture;
  • Slightly turn the heat up on your hob – continue to mix at regular intervals;
  • When the mixture starts to bubble begin mixing at a steady pace without stopping for 5 minutes;
  • After the 5 minutes of stirring turn off your hob;
  • Pour about half the mixture into a jar (any typical 340g to 370g jar should do) and then a sprig of thyme and a whole chipotle chilli;
  • Pour in the rest of the mixture;
  • Let cool, then lid and refrigerate – it should be ready to eat by the time it’s completely cooled.

Serve

Enjoy on a piece of buttered toast or as you normally would any jam. I like it mixed in with my porridge and as a condiment on a bacon or ham sandwich. I reckon the jam would make a nice pie filling as well. Be sure to warn folks not to eat that whole chilli that was added to the jam!

BOGOF Bubble Tea at Milk Tea & Pearl Shoreditch

DSC_8568

Taiwanese bubble tea shop, Milk Tea & Pearl, has recently opened its second London location at Boxpark in Shoreditch (the first shop is on Little Portland Street near Oxford Circus). Keep reading to find out about a special offer available to readers of this blog.

Fruity and refreshing, I reckon bubble tea’s an ideal summer beverage. Gooey and chewy tapioca pearls in your drink are a lot of fun too. I got to sample some of the flavours and toppings (loved the lychee jelly) during a recent visit. Have a look at the many yummy options here.

I really liked the Milk Tea & Pearl drinks that I tried, and I’m happy to recommend the place. In fact, I thought it was such a treat, I think you should share your bubble tea experience with a friend should. So, I worked out a sweet little 2for1/BOGOF deal with the Milk Tea & Pearl folks that’s offer that’s good for the whole month of August. All ya gotta do is mention “tikichris” at the counter when visiting the Boxpark outlet of Milk Tea & Pearl and you’ll get a second drink of equal or lesser value for free.

You’re welcome. Enjoy 🙂

Milk Tea & Pearl Shoreditch is located at Unit 58 Boxpark (upper deck nearest Shoreditch High Street Overground Station), 2-4 Bethnal Green Road, E1 6GY. The shop is open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 10pm and on Sunday from 10am t0 6pm. Find out more at milkteapearl.co.uk.

By the way, they do real fruit smoothies too.

Recipe: Garlic Prawn Tacos with Peach Salsa and Chipotle Pecan Sour Cream

DSC04392

Ready for taco night? My garlic prawn tacos with peach salsa and chipotle pecan sour cream are easy to make and perfect for casual summer dining. The peach salsa is a nice seasonal twist on an old standard while the chipotle pecan sour cream adds depth of flavour and a bit of heat. Enjoy!

GARLIC PRAWN TACOS WITH PEACH SALSA AND CHIPOTLE PECAN SOUR CREAM

Yum

Garlic Prawn Tacos Ingredients (makes six ample tacos)

  • 300g of peeled king prawns;
  • 3 finely diced cloves of garlic;
  • Juice from one freshly squeezed lime;
  • Small bunch of fresh coriander (chopped, stems removed);
  • 2 tablespoons of olive oil;
  • About 100g of shredded romaine and iceberg lettuce;
  • 6 flour tortillas (I used Old El Paso‘s Regular Super Soft flour tortillas).

Peach and Pecan Salsa Ingredients

  • 4 peaches (peeled and diced);
  • 1 diced red onion;
  • 2 cloves of finely diced garlic;
  • 4 tablespoons of fresh coriander (chopped, stems removed);
  • 2 tablespoons of fresh basil leaves (chopped);
  • 3 diced green onions;
  • Juice from one freshly squeezed lime;
  • 1 tablespoon of cider vinegar;
  • Pinch of sea salt;
  • Pinch of black pepper;
  • Pinch of white pepper;
  • Pinch of cinnamon.

Chipotle Pecan Sour Cream Ingredients

  • 150ml of sour cream;
  • Pinch of cinnamon;
  • 2 tablespoons of finely diced chives;
  • 75g of crushed pecans;
  • 2 small chipotle chillies.

Method for the Tacos

  • Add the prawns, lime juice and 2 diced cloves of garlic to a bowl;
  • Lightly mix these ingredients together, cover and set aside to marinate;
  • On a low setting, heat up about a tablespoon of olive oil in a pan for a couple of minutes;
  • Put the marinated prawns in the pan, cover with a lid and cook until the salsa and sour cream are ready;
  • Drain the liquid before serving and garnish with coriander (if reheating squirt a bit of fresh lime juice on the prawns first;
  • For the tortillas, heat in the oven at 75º C (165º F). This is the same temperature as for roasting the pecans. So you can put them in the oven together if you like. Check every so often to make sure the tortillas aren’t getting too hot or crispy. They should be soft when you serve them.

Method for the Sour Cream

  • If you haven’t already turned the oven on to warm your tortillas, preheat it to 75º C (165º F);
  • Spread the crushed pecans on a baking tray;
  • Open two chipotle chillies and sprinkle the seeds evenly among the nuts;
  • Place the tray in the oven and cook for about 10 minutes (check every few minutes to make sure your nuts are getting burnt);
  • Scoop the sour cream into a bowl and add a pinch of cinnamon along with the chives – mix thoroughly;
  • Add the pecans to the cream – lightly swirl the pecan into the cream keeping them mostly at the top.

DSC04384

Method for the Salsa

Place all the salsa ingredients in a bowl – lightly but thoroughly mix them together, cover and set to the side (in the fridge if it’s warm in your kitchen) until ready to serve.

Serve

Serve DIY style with everything separate so that folks can assemble their tacos as they see fit. Three or four prawns per taco should be about right. The portions ought to be plenty to satisfy a couple of hungry adults or to serve as starters for a small dinner party. I think the recipe is straightforward enough to figure out if you want to make more than six tacos. The salsa and the sour cream are excellent on their own (or served/mixed together) as dips or with other dishes. It’s worth keeping in mind that the chipotle sour cream has a mild kick.

Good Stuff

DSC04189

Here’s a quick little list of good stuff I’ve recently come across and thought was worth sharing with you. Enjoy!

Airbnb

July started with a visit to Paris and my first experience staying at an Airbnb property. My lovely host, Maguy, had a comfortable, spacious and very clean!) apartment smartly situated in the 11th arrondissement. Her home will be my first thought next time I need to find a place to stay in Paris (and I hope I’m not shooting myself in the foot by spreading the word about this gem).

DSC_8494 - Carluccio's Christmas in July

Christmas in July

July’s when a lot of retailers and brands put on events to show what they’re going to sell when Christmastime comes around. I went round to a few of these unseasonal sneak peaks and especially liked what I saw (and tasted) Carluccio’s and the East India Company.

Carluccio’s: I loved just about everything I sampled. I couldn’t get enough of the masserini (butter and cocoa biscuits from Piemonte, £7.50 for a 300g jar).

East India Company: I was really blown away but some of the products I tried. I always thought these guys offered hight quality times but I think they’ve got some things coming out in Christmas that well surpasses what they’ve done in the past. Totally loved EIC’s caramel sea salt biscuits!

Jacket Required

When not rambling about France or cramming Christmas treats in my pie hole, I was prowling the makeshift aisles of London menswear tradeshow, Jacket Required. Luckily in this heat no jacket wasn’t actually necessary to get in (just press accreditation). Sprin and summer 2014 threads I liked included …

Pocketshop.com: One-Hour Supermarket Delivery Service for London

Pocket Shop

Pocket Shop is the UK’s first one-hour supermarket delivery service. Recently launched across London, it’s essentially like having online access to a Sainsbury’s Local that magically delivers on fairly short notice.

Deliveries are sans alcoholic beverages at the moment, but I’ve been told that’s going to change soon (and that the service eventually will hit Tesco, M&S and Boots too). Maybe Pocket Shop isn’t all that sexy of a concept, but it’s definitely worth keeping in mind if you’re really busy and strapped for time … or feeling super lazy and just can’t be bothered.

Me? Right now? Really busy and strapped for time. And Pocketshop very much came in handy on this Friday night when I’m pathetically stuck at home alone and up to my eyeballs with work. I got a whole mess of work to slog through on the horizon this weekend.

So, hooray for Pocket Shop. I gave the site a first time browse this evening and order some things. It took about a minute to set up an account, and choosing my groceries was a straightforward process and no different than other online supermarket shopping experiences.

I liked how I was able to settle into my work and leave my shopping to the Pocket Shoppers. The price for such luxury? Ordinary supermarket prices plus a rather nominal delivery charge: within one hour is £6.50 two hours is £5.50; and three hours s £5.10. I went with the two-hour delivery window. The one-hour option actually wasn’t available “due to high demand” – fair enough I suppose for a Friday evening. Still, I received my stuff in about an hour and a half.

What’d I get? A bag of ‘ready to assemble’ Caesar salad for my dinner along with some bottled water and a few more items to tide me over for the next couple of days. I got a pint of ice cream for the weekend too (my reward for staying in and working). Including delivery charge, I spend around £20 and reckon is was every bit worth it and roughly inline with what I would have probably spent anyway.

My deliverer was friendly and polite. She said she used public transport to reach my flat (I’m in Hackney, E5). She had to substitute a few items (San Pelligrino instead of Perrier, for example) and did a decent enough job with her selections (I could have got my money back if I didn’t like what she had picked).

I can see myself using Pocketshop again, and I can imagine it becoming a huge success as well, especially if they start delivering booze within one, two and three hour timeslots.

Breakfast at Tapas Brindisa London Bridge? ¡Muy Bien!

DSC_8736

Tapas Brindisa London Bridge has updated its breakfast menu and the hours it’s available. The results are muy bien and the portions are the very definition of muchísimo.

Of course, if you’re just popping in for a quick cortado and a pastry, you expect a well pulled cup of coffee served with friendly efficiency. If you’re truly hungry though, I highly recommend going with something from the “Classics” menu. I recently had – and savoured every bite of – the morcilla with eggs, apple fritters and honey served over grilled toast (£6.50). It was gorgeous and bountifully presented. A side of grilled chorizo (I reckon Brindisa offers some of the best in London) for £3.50 might have pushed things over the edge but ensured I was satiated through the afternoon and gave any other so-called “all day” brekkie a real run for the money.

I’d be keen to replicate that meal again (and soon please) but would probably lean toward trying something else. “Broken eggs” over fried potatoes and Iberico pork sobrasada sounds absolutely scrumptious.

To the best of my knowlege, the other Brindisa outlets don’t do breakfast (yet anyway). If you’re commuting through London Bridge, planning a Borough Market shopping expedition or simply hankering a magnificent morning meal, breakfast is served at Tapas Brindisa London Bridge from 8:30am to 11am, Monday to Friday and 9am to 11am on Saturdays. The restaurant is located at 18-20 Southwark Street, SE1 1TJ.

HKK’s Exquisite Five Course Duck Lunch

DSC_8717

There’s not a whole lot I can write about my recent visit to HKK for a taste of its five course duck lunch menu without my review coming across as one big gloat about how much I enjoyed it.

Besides, so much of what I loved about the experience was getting to sit back and allow Chef Tong Chee Hwee, sommelier Miguel Hernandez and all the cordial HKK staff encountered to provide their deliberate best to ensure I had an exquisite meal. The months old HKK is a brilliant extension of the Hakkasan brand and welcome addition to another rather desolate stretch of ambiguous hinterland straddling the professional City and hipster Shoreditch.

So, all I’m going to do is list the menu and suggest that, if £42 per head (plus whatever you spend on drinks) and a bit of planning (it takes two days to prep the duck) for an upscale lunch sounds like a delectable idea, then make your reservations now for one of the best meals you’re apt to have in a London restaurant this year.

Duck Lunch Menu, 24 July 2013

Lotus and Mango Duck Wrap;
Cherry Wood Roasted Peking Duck;
Truffle Duck Broth;
Jasmine Rice with Roasted Duck Claypot and Wagyu Beef;
Salted Cashew Nut and Milk Chocolate Parfait.

2011 Albarino “Marinero”, Terras Gauda, Rias Baixas, Spain;
2011 Pinot Noir, Stepp & Gaul, Pfalz, Germany.

Oh yeah, and the cherry wood roasted Peking duck … my god! It was possibly the most succulent piece of meat I’ve had in my life. Wow. And that German Pinot Noir? One of the most intriguing wines I’ve sipping in ages!

HKK is located at 88 Worship Street, EC2A 2DQ. Find out more at hkklondon.com.

Win a Case of Buddy’s Bourbon Flavored Beer

Win a Case of Buddy's Bourbon Flavoured Beer

COMPETITION IS NOW OVER AND THE WINNER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. THANKS SO MUCH FOR READING TIKICHRIS. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR LOTS MORE FUN AND FREEBIES TO COME!

Here’s a chance to win a whole case of beer with true American spirit – Buddy’s Bourbon Flavored Beer.

I’ve tasted this brew with the whiskey kick, a hint of honey and an ABV of 5.1%. It was right tasty and very refreshing. And as dude-ific as the Buddy’s concept may sound, it’s a sweet kiss of a drink that’s suitable for not so macho palates. Whatever you think about mixing Bourbon and lager, it’s certainly worth a taste.

Buddy’s recipe is licensed from Buddy’s Brewhouse in Michigan and balances honey and sugar with bourbon flavour and soft tones of oak. The beer is available in the UK exclusively at Tesco.

To be in with a chance win the case of Buddy’s Beer simply tweet the following:

RT to Win – Hey @tikichris! Can I try a case of @buddysbeer? http://bit.ly/15bV8MY #beer #bourbon

Good luck and please take a moment to read the terms and conditions before tweeting!

T&C

I’ll pick one winner at random on Friday 9 August 2013 (noon, British time). The winner will receive one case of 12 330ml bottles of Buddy’s Beer (or – and this is an important point – the equivalent cost in Tesco gift vouchers if the winner’s address is outside of London).

To be eligible to win (the beer or the gift vouchers), you need to have an address in the UK. Obviously you also need to be of legal drinking age to receive this alcoholic product and must be able to show valid ID that proves your age.

COMPETITION IS NOW OVER AND THE WINNER HAS BEEN CONTACTED. THANKS SO MUCH FOR READING TIKICHRIS. PLEASE STAY TUNED FOR LOTS MORE FUN AND FREEBIES TO COME!

London Daily Photo: Bowling Green

LDP 2013.07.30 - Lawn Bowls

I took this photo yesterday afternoon at Kensington Gardens bowling green during the launch party for the first vintage of award-winning Digby Fine English Sparkling Wine: 2009 Reserve Brut and 2009 Rosé Brut. Crisp and fruitful quaffs – and like lawn bowls –  very English expressions of summer.

Ever Wonder Why Cats Knead Their Paws? This Very Cute Video Might Have the Answer!

Sponsored video

My cat certainly does it. I’m sure yours does too. It’s super cute but can be a bit ouch-y if the kitty has some serious claws. This sweet little video (sponsored by Felix) might have the answer to why cats knead their paws.

Based on hard evidence or not, it’s certainly an adorable idea and a great excuse to watch some fun cat clips.

LBM Audible #11: Getting in the Picture with tikichris

Here’s a link to a LBM Audible interview with yours truly about photography and blogging.

LBM Audible is brought to you from the fine folks at LondonBloggers.net. I’ve been an avid fan and advocate of their London Bloggers Meetup for years. Andy and Bernie do an impressive job organising regular events for bloggers – always with relevant speakers and topics to the blogging community. So it was a pleasure and a privilege to sit down with them (awesome audio magic from Yiannis Pelekanos too) for a lively Skype session the other day and to now have a listen to the results in this tidy little podcast.

Garrett Popcorn Coming to London

DSC_8864 - The Chicago Mix, Garrett Popcorn

Word on the street is that the Chicago’s favourite munchies maker, Garrett Popcorn, is soon to open an outlet here in London at a “central, west-ish” location.

For those unfamiliar with the brand, Garrett offers a range of signature popcorn flavours sold in one, two, three and a half, and six and a half gallon speciality tins. Big USA style stuff!

I recently sampled a bit of Garrett’s most popular flavour, the Chicago Mix (and then sampled a little bit more and then another little bit and …). A creation of born out of requests of ardent Garrett fans, the Chicago Mix “unites” sweet Caramel Crisp with savoury Cheese Corn. It’s irresistibly tasty.

Be on the lookout for Garrett popping up this autumn. Find out more at garrettpopcorn.com.
